I wonder how much of the Billions of dollars in weapons we sent to Iran between 1980-2015 were used to fund Hamas - since the funding of Hamas is what started my line of thinking.

I think the more pertinent dilemma though is why we continue to tolerate religious fundamentalism

we are a secular nation and our religious population is diminishing. Doesn't matter who we were established by over two centuries ago. If Islam had modernized itself to the degree that Christianity has since the days of our founders, we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

I guess the issue is/becomes - who are we to decide what is a valid form of worship/idealogy. Trust me I prefer the 1970's Iran / Afghanistan to the 2020's versions but it's not just a small percentage of people that want to live that way.

Are we to just exterminate them? Can it even be done? Haven't we tried eradicating groups like al-qaeda only to drive them further underground only to resurface years later with more hatred and ammo on their hands?

this makes me think that while I can totally agree with military action against some entities, how important and difficult is to find the right ratio of putting funds on that versus things like education as way to prevent bad radicalization. If you could does not mean you always had to.
 
We probably could've won against Al Qaeda but that war was just a scam. Pretty sure they hate Julian Assange because he exposed it as a giant money laundering scheme and to win was never the goal

My biggest criticism of of Islam is the blatant use of the word "God" while committing gruesome violence.

Other religions do this as well, but moreso retroactively as moral justification, or thanking God for not letting it happen to them while they do it onto others.

Radical Muslims praise Allah while committing the act. It's beyond terrible.

God does not instruct wanton violence. It's disgusting.
