I think you missed my point. My point was about population density being a reliable statistic by saying "18,000 deaths per year" is an acceptable amount based on the number of people living in the US. I said 18,000 was not acceptable.

And I also made sure to say that I wasn't simply talking about just gun related homicides, apples to oranges as you put it. Since 2Aer's favorite things to say are that "without guns, people will still find a way to murder each other, just look at the knife stabbings in ________ (insert country)." So you are trying a modify my argument to fit your opinion when I was honestly saying "gun" or "stabbing" deaths in Europe or Asia. Either way, I will stand by my statement because overall homicides are less likely to happen in countries with stricter gun control. I'm NOT saying the US should eliminate all guns because we can all agree it would never happen. I'm just saying tighter restrictions only make sense.

Oh I think your wrong there ,in fact if you do some research into it . There is a case involving a company that the ATF retards went and charged with manufacturing machine guns when in reality it was a drawing on a piece of metal. I'd almost bet it will be overturned because of this case and a case against another company that made forced reset triggers. The ATF is out of control and are digging there own grave along with helping overturn an unconstitutional tax aka the NFA.
 
I was happy to NOT see this thread on the first page since December, but alas...

Two geriatric Asian American men, independently, murdered 10 and 7 people respectively in the suburbs of LA and San Francisco this week. Both targetted Asian American communities too. Was this racism? (Viets hate the Chinese, who hate the Koreans, who hate the Japs, who hate the Viets... could be racism) or was it something completely off the wall?

The first shooter, a 72 year old, shot himself before being apprehended. He used an illegal pistol in the state of California, which is to say, their laws failed them. The second seemed to be a copycat and literally parked in the police station parking lot and waited to be arrested. He used a (presumably legal) handgun. He was an employee at a garden center and all his victims appeared to be coworkers.

It's really awful seeing group killings in the national headlines again, for so many reasons. I can't fathom why these men did this.
 
The reactionaries were out in full force talking about anti-Asian violence yesterday. Guess they didn't learn their lesson after the gay/non-binary dude shot up the gay club last year.
 
That shit is absolutely tragic…but I still don’t see how the new ban on pistol braces(or making the register as SBRs)issuppose to prevent something like this from happening ? It’s almost like the laws are just to slowly take our rights not our protection

It won't do a thing. The only time a pistol braced AR has been used in one of these crimes was the Aurora, Colorado theater shooting back in the early 2010s, as far as I know. And that guy honestly didn't kill many people considering he was double fisting two AR-pistols and firing into a packed opening night theater. Talk about sucking at mass murder... :rolleyes:

The brace ban is indeed just a forced registration attempt. I've been wanting a SBR anyways so I will register, destroy my pistol brace, and put on a regular stock. And not have to pay the tax stamp... good job ATF! You gave me a free SBR registration! That's TOTALLY gonna cut down on crime somehow. 'Cause as everyone knows, mass murderers and criminals ALWAYS register their SBR before committing any crimes.

i took another look at this today. back in december 2022 when we were discussing this, all that had happened was that the bill was introduced in july and referred to ways and means same day. nothing has happened since.

still not even close to "about to be overturned"

hey @mal3volent my position on guns has been frequently and deliberately mischaracterized by a small handful of bluelighters over the years so thanks for not assuming and just asking.

let's get that out of the way first so it's clear. i'm not in favor of advocating to ban all guns or repeal the second amendment. i'd describe my position as: "policy has to find a way to stop lunatics getting guns while enabling responsible citizens to exercise their second amendment rights without an undue bureaucratic burden".

i have a lot of thoughts, not well-organized so i'll just put them out here.

you can't solve a problem unless you understand a problem. mass shootings are poorly understood. so i would start with increased funding into the cause factors. there is actually good news here: A thaw in the freeze on federal funding for gun violence and injury prevention research

i think you have to focus. some shootings are likely, almost entirely unpreventable. so focus where current approaches are failing and a new perspective on prevention could and should work - school shootings. i watched a great ted talk which really resonated with me: How to Prevent School Shootings | Jillian Peterson | TEDxHamlineUniversity

if you don't have time for the whole thing, she talks about why current preventative measures are not working at about 7:00 and at about 8:50 she starts talking about red flags and prevention.

note that she doesn't talk about gun control or limiting gun ownership at all.

but i do think we need some legal measures to address issues too. if you lose a gun and do not report it stolen, if it is subsequently used in the commission of a crime, you are guilty of a crime.

if a member of your family uses your gun in the commission of a crime, you are guilty of a crime. if they kill somebody with your gun, you are guilty of negligent homicide.

other legal possibilities...

microstamping laws

regulation of high-capacity feeding devices (and disallowing grandfathering in)

laws to address extreme risk (19 states currently have such on their books)

close the 21-18 age gap between licensed and unlicensed sales/purchases (22 states already have)

background checks on all sales.

safe storage laws.

a majority of americans support some degree of 'common sense' gun laws (which i understand to mean laws which do not ban guns or repeal the 2nd amendment) and characterizing any discussion of this kind of stuff as "banning all guns" or "liberals want to take your guns" is part of the problem.

Thats right. It would only feed the black market. Prohibition does not work. Just like the war on drugs have not worked. Prohibition is not the answer.
