Film What's the Last Film You Saw? v. Tell Us What You Thought!

The Batman (2022)

Probably the best superhero flick to date. I don't really consider Batman a superhero so maybe that's why I enjoy them vs any other 'super' heroes. My wife and I both very much enjoyed Matt Reeve's take on the genre. It's something between a detective/noir drama, a mystery, a psychological thriller, and an action flick, and it does so very very well. All the actors were amazing, but most especially Paul Dano and Robert Pattinson.

Amazing film. Too bad we can never go to an evening showing again... the audience nearly ruined our night... flashlights on phones, children and couples talking in quiet scenes, fat people breathing, there was a child whose mom hated all of us and let him press the recline buttons on the chair a bunch until an old man near us stood up and shouted, "Would you mind!?" Long story short, I flew a hail of curses at people as we were leaving, indirectly, so hopefully that shitty mom had her kid exposed to the 'fuck' and 'cunt' words so she can experience some of what we, the rest of the audience, experienced.

Anyways, this one was better than The Dark Knight imo. I think I enjoyed who Batman was portrayed as in this new one; in the Nolan Batmans, he's a playboy, he's got the latest greatest tech, it's a bit too... superheroey. Whereas this new Batman, he's reclusive, withdrawn, quiet. Just more my speed I guess. And despite the three hour runtime, it felt better pacing wise, and thus shorter than The Dark Knight as well.

8.5/10

Shooter (2007)

What if Lee Harvey Oswald was innocent? This film takes that premise, mixes in some Rambo: First Blood, and calls it a day. Generic action flick, shitty plot (from the guy who directed Training Day, so... wtf lol) but very watchable because in its shittiness, it is enjoyable. Wahlberg portrays the ultimate American Joe, Bob Lee Swagger (lol). He is wronged by the evil forces within' the swampy guv'ment and then sets out to right those wrongs... with his fists and his sniper rifles!!!

Not half bad for what it was.

6/10

Oh yeah, almost forgot:

The Master (2012)

Knowing nothing much about Scientology, I didn't know the parallels between Seymour Hoffman's character and L. Ron Hubbard till after when I was reading trivia. That sent me down a rabbit hole on Wiki about L. Ron Hubbard and the evils he has sewn in this world.

This film was very good; I didn't enjoy it, but I think that's because I fear cults, I fear the power that men can hold over others. And it was a P.T. Anderson film, so... never any real happy themes. An interesting insight into the early years of the cult now known as The Church of Scientology. Phoenix and Seymour Hoffman are fantastic as one might expect. Worth a watch if you enjoyed other P.T. Anderson flicks.

7/10

Last feature I saw was Taboo (Netflix series - not for here but let's be honest, most are stuck on that media).

Tom Hardy as a resentul & revengeful, protagonist in a Victorian period- some Shakespearian/ Hamlet type themes - hence, the 'Taboo' title.

I was engrossed in the first two episodes; some after got a little too, 'Games of Thrones' - esque (was not a fan).
Obviously, the individual episodes got various directors/producers, so the productions reflect them.

Great acting. However, a bit of copy-cating, of peaky-blinders (obviously) but disappointing that this couldn't find an original niche

I’ve watched a lot of films recently and forgot about them. Too lazy to fully review them but here’s what I recall:

Dances with Wolves (1990) 7.5/10
Ronin ( 1998 ) 7/10
Drive (2011) 8.5/10
Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
Mobile Suit Gundam 1&2 (1981) 6.5/10
LMS, is wonderful.

Dances with Wolves is in meh list of favs; such a beautiful film, beautiful score, also. 😊

You Cant kill Meme, it was a documentary film, new on Hulu, very eye opening and thought provoking, learned alot of the frog Pepe and how a meme can wield so much BS and power, think i will view it again , was a bit distracted, but its stuck with me in ways. but this memetic magick is intriguing be it true or false

Szamanka

wild femininity and men trying to cultivate it for their material ends. lead girl works. enjoyed it more than Possession.

Pig - 3.5/5

Interesting movie, unique, fun to watch Nic Cage in a serious role where he has to bury his ego.

Very melancholic movie. The ending leaves something to be desired... but I think maybe that's the whole point. (!)

Lamb (2021) - 3.5 Baaaaahs [geddit? Sorry, I'll see myself out] - Maybe it was hyped too much and also describing it as "horror" was extremely misleading. I liked the premise and the movie kept me interested, although very little actually happens.

Dorian Gray (2009) - 4.5 stars - Yayyy. Read the book not long ago, really liked this adaptation. Nothing to do with the smexy nudity, honest guvna!

I think I know what to watch while I wait for my meds to get me to sleep. I've never understood WTF happened to cause an obnoxious cartoon frog to become the symbol of hatred. Hopefully I'll know by morning. Thanks for pointing that out!

The Bombardment (The Shadow in My Eye) on NETFLIX is REALLY REALLY good.

Based on a true story. In the dying months of the Second World War in Europe, the Royal Air Force launches Operation Carthage, a pinpoint bombing raid using de Havilland Mosquito bombers to hit Shellhuset, Gestapo's headquarters in downtown Copenhagen, the Danish capital of Nazi occupied Denmark. The raid was initially successful in destroying Gestapo's main archive of Danish resistance fighters, but one low flying plane from the first of three attack waves clipped a tall mast and crashed in nearby Frederiksberg next to a Catholic children's school. Planes from the second and third wave of bombers mistook the smoke from the Mosquito's wreck for the correct target and about a dozen planes dropped their explosive and incendiary bombs on the school full of children and nuns.

On a film binge today:

Halloween Party (2020)

Interesting premise for a horror film about a virus that makes your worst fear come true - didn’t have the budget so it became a generic slasher.

2.5/5

Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (2021)

Seen it before but it was actually better this time for some reason, still got the same rating lol.

3.5/5

LOVE that premise for Halloween Party. Is it still worth watching?
Budget is never an excuse (in horror) IMO. Firstly, practical gore/effects are WAY better than expensive, crappy CGI. More fun and more realistic looking. They should have hired Tom Savini (or one of the guys who were taught by him). Then...the fears don't have to be elaborate. Someone afraid of fire trapped in a burning [place/building/whatever], fear of being buried alive, someone with a phobia of heights being stranded on a narrow ledge around a building many stories up, gore effects for someone with a fear of disease/infection having their body rot from syphilis or necrotizing fasciitis etc can all be done cheaply.

Yeah I’d say it is tbh. It was nothing to do with the acting or locations etc just they could have shown a bit of the fears being realised was what I meant.

Has anyone seen The Yellow Wallpaper (2021) yet? I loved the classic Charlotte Perkins Gilman short story it's based on, but I can't imagine it being made into a 99 minute movie without it being extremely tedious and slow.

Shit and Champagne (2020) - 3 booty bumps - Uhhhhh, I honestly don't know what to say about this movie lol. Some parts were really dumb and cringy and other parts made me laugh out loud,
