Covid seems to be evolving fairly quickly, like other coronaviruses. Which means the mRNA vaccines could be handy as they allow for (comparatively) rapid updates, but we'll likely always fall behind the curve.

yea but at what cost?

should i get another shot and take the chance of something minor happening like my ears ringing for weeks (like was just reported here) or something more major like a heart attack just so i don't catch a cold?

ive had my ass kicked by the flu before....that doesn't mean im gonna chase it with a vaccine every year - you can if you want, but i prefer to receive the least amount of injections throughout my life....bypassing the liver is something that should always be much considered in my book - especially when what's being injected isn't fully understood...

2 different vaccines have given me lifelong allergies - one of them deadly being anaphylaxis - and im not happy about it....after it happening twice and watching doctors shrug their shoulders about it, im not about to that make same mistake again

mRNA vaccines are a complete failure so far, in my eyes, and if you can't see that by what's going on right now, then im not really sure what you're seeing

Well I can't speak for you but after the 50th booster I grew spare arms and legs and can now fly like a feather! Unfortunately I'm not printing money from my ass yet but I'm sure it'll happen in due course

The vaccines did make sense with delta, but they don't make sense now. The Australian government just announced they're reducing the wait time for boosters to three months. What's next? Two months?

It's 4 months here. 2 months for J&J. I could agree that they make some sense for some people, but mandates... come on. Not even talking about children.

I disagree with you here. I'm not targeting anti-vaxxers. I don't care if they don't want to get vaccinated. What I don't like is people blatantly spreading misinformation. The disturbing thing about anti-vaxxers is the same thing that disturbs me (and others) about flat earthers and election deniers.

I wasn't talking about you, I was merely explaining why it makes sense for politicians to hammer on the vaccines. But it all comes down to the same things indeed.

There is currently no law about boosters but there will be soon which makes no sense because boosters don't do anything. The governments of the world need to stop and re-assess the threat of omicron.

Doesn't seem like anyone is reassessing anything, apart from the UK (?). Several other EU countries are moving ahead with mandated vaccines for everyone or certain groups (e.g. 50+).

I think even if 75% would've gotten vaccinated we could have gotten a handle on it enough that the virus would've starved and slowly weakened. Instead we've been feeding it fresh bodies for two years.

No man, go look at the numbers of EU countries. Mind you that we also had much more severe restrictions (lockdowns, stuff closed etc...)
It would've resulted in less deaths for the US though, that much is true.

A well balanced article. They claim that 80-90% of omicron cases are likely asymptomatic? That's very high.
Anyway, we're almost out of this crap. Main issue now is that there's additional pressure on hospitals with staff falling out. May the media spread the word accordingly as opposed to sticking with the fear-mongering headlines and angles on literally everything.

Understanding the burden of omicron depends crucially on the proportion of asymptomatic infections. A systematic review based on previous SARS-CoV-2 variants suggested that 40% of infections were asymptomatic.
Evidence suggests that the proportion of asymptomatic infections is much higher for omicron, perhaps as high as 80–90%. Garrett and colleagues found that among 230 individuals in South Africa enrolling in a clinical trial, 71 (31% ) were PCR positive for SARS-CoV-2 and had the omicron variant and no symptoms.
Assuming this prevalence of infection was representative of the population, the implied incidence compared to detected cases suggests that more than 90% of infections were asymptomatic in South Africa.

In addition to the much larger proportion of asymptomatic infections, in the USA the ratio of COVID-19 hospitalisations to detected cases hospitalised has declined by about 50% in most states compared with previous peaks.
The proportion of COVID-19 patients in hospital who require intubation or are dying has declined by as much as 80–90% in Canada and South Africa.

IHME estimates suggest that increasing use of masks to 80% of the population, for example, will only reduce cumulative infections over the next 4 months by 10%. Increasing COVID-19 vaccine boosters or vaccinating people who have not yet been vaccinated is unlikely to have any substantial impact on the omicron wave because by the time these interventions are scaled up the omicron wave will be largely over.

By March, 2022 a large proportion of the world will have been infected with the omicron variant. With continued increases in COVID-19 vaccination, the use in many countries of a third vaccine dose, and high levels of infection-acquired immunity, for some time global levels of SARS-CoV-2 immunity should be at an all time high. For some weeks or months, the world should expect low levels of virus transmission.
