Should the new variant prove to be highly transmissible, there are fears that a fourth wave could materialise – and in a more dangerous form than had been anticipated.

However, Dr Angelique Coetzee, chair of the South African Medical Association and a practising GP based in Pretoria, said it was “premature” to make predictions of a health crisis.

“It’s all speculation at this stage. It may be it’s highly transmissible, but so far the cases we are seeing are extremely mild,” she said. “Maybe two weeks from now I will have a different opinion, but this is what we are seeing. So are we seriously worried? No. We are concerned and we watch what’s happening. But for now we’re saying, ‘OK: there’s a whole hype out there. [We’re] not sure why.’”

Yeah I heard that the cases of the new variant so far have been very mild. I'm hoping this is a sign that it is mutating into a less dangerous, more transmissible virus.
 
I'm not scared of death, might be a relief, we wouldn't have to wait around to see the pile of shit we created finish falling apart. I'm a lot more worried that we're going to drown in our own shit than I am in nanoparticles or whatever other buzz pseudoscientific fear term you might throw out next, though.

a more mild version of covid would be bad for vaccine sales, wouldn't it :unsure:

yes nextstrain is fucking brilliant. i keep telling people to go and look on there because its so fun to zoom in on the data, check changes over time, etc.

the number of new nonsynonymous mutations in the spike protein is fucking terrifying from an immunity point of view, regardless of whether your immunity is acquired through vaccines or infection. there are also a vast number of mutations in orf1ab, which codes for most of the nonstructural proteins (i.e. the ones that do shit) is also insane, see here if you're interested in more detail.

just compare the numbers of S and ORF1ab (the right hand side of the pages posted above) in delta vs omicron. this is huge for a virus that is considered to be highly conserved.

but, i've heard on the grapevine that some of the mutations actually, finally, reduce virulence. going to ask my lab guys tomorrow.

What's crazy is how many times these "experts" have either gotten it completely wrong, and often times blatantly lied, and people still believe anything that they say.

A castle built on sand. Proof.. where is the proof of the initial variant, the original SARS-NCOV2 viral particle. Have you actually verified it? Do you know? Or are you just believing on trust and blind faith. All the original isolation teams were contacted directly and queried, not a single team purified the supposed viral particle for imaging and characterisation. Kind of fundamental to the definition of isolation, to have the thing isolated, don't you think?

All these variants are absolutely meaningless statistical drivel.

your confidence while being so completely wrong is amazing. and the cognitive dissonance you must be enduring to accuse others of blind faith is astounding.

you keep harping on about isolation but viruses are generally cultured in host cells and you remove the reads from the host cells in silico. this is incredibly basic. i don't know why i'm still bothering responding to you tbh. you can tell that the cultured virus is not part of the host cell by sequencing the host cell by itself and noting the absence of the putative viral reads.

really feel for people close to you that get covid, your manner is upsetting enough to people enduring covid and long covid on here. it must be incredibly isolating, but i've said before, i'm glad for that in your case.

I comply if its in my best interests to....say like when you are being handcuffed......but otherwise , no.
