Memes Official Meme Discussion Thread

im confused @TheLoveBandit .... is this a reference to the last election? Because Trump lost the popular vote and electoral vote in a landslide. Nancy and Chuck won back Congress. I'm confused. Trump was acquitted after his second impeachment

I'm not sure, but I believe the 1st&2nd ghosted into the center reference impeachments where Chuck&Nancy got a big L.

but 7 members of his own cult defected and if it had been a private vote many more would have.

Assumption on your part. Could be right, could be wrong. I could just as easily state a private vote would have had Dem defections, or less Reps vote to impeach. It seems some voting was irrelevant of facts and more based on political needs.

except I have evidence and precedent to support my case. Look at the last private vote that was held.

This remind me of when I first got disillusioned with the system. I was a teenager, 15 I think,. or maybe 16. At the grocery store I worked at, a guy who worked at the deli started noticing how much perfectly good food they were throwing away, so he started taking it with him and giving it to the substantial homeless population. After a little while, he went to management with the idea to start doing it officially... it would be great visibility and public sentiment for the grocery store, and would help people. Win-win, right? Nope, they just threw "corporate policy, you're stealing" at him, fired him on the spot, threatened to call the police and press charges (I don't believe they ever actually did, but I'm not sure), and from then on, they put a padlock on the dumpster and had cops come around a few times a day to make sure no one was "stealing" their garbage perfectly good food they were throwing away.

It still makes me angry to think about.

Why does the right keeps on talking about Al Gore? He's insignificant, nobody gives a shit about him anymore.
But they probably don't know anybody else besides Greta who is vocal about climate change.

I can't speak for who made the meme, but my posting it is due mostly because my brain fails. Biden has put John Kerry into his cabinet as "U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate". And I confused Gore and Kerry in my head when reposting that. I'll probably confuse those two quite a bit.

Seems we only have 9y left, no faking this time, pinky swear. :\

Below is in response to a meme I posted with Thunberg's scowl and words to the effect of Green Energy fail saved by fossil fuels.

Of course the coal power that froze accounted for more than the wind, but less than the natural gas. And then prices spiked up to ~$9,000/kWH. Blaming green energy for that disaster is just a straight up lie.

I could try and debate the facts, as there are several sources available from either political view (damn few fact based and honest, unfortunately). The sum of them from my quick look point to the reality being that ALL of Texas' energy system underperformed due to the cold snap. The lack of wind and solar was small, given they should be accounted for little of the energy demand during this season = yes they were lower than anticipated, but the difference is like 6k MWatts instead of 8kMWatts (numbers provided courtesy my ass). Whereas the grid is intended to rely on coal and (primarily) natural gas during winter months, and those were also heavily effected by the temperatures (natural gas having significant issues with temperature, no surprise). So the fossil fuels underperformed as well, but were being counted on to a much larger degree during winter and therefore contributing to more of the shortfall. Also, there appears to be criticism of the overall infrastructure (grid, facilities, etc) in winterizing - obviously this was a more brutal winter than anticipated, but their preparation in general appears to be lacking in recent years. Several plants went down, in succession, as demand continued to be high and resources scarce.

Lastly, I'll remind everyone that Greta has shit all to do with Texas. Hence placement in the meme thread, because it isn't real.

I find the rampant smearing of AOC to be pretty gross, too (not just over this but in general). Plenty of her Republican colleagues expressed that it was traumatic for them, too, I don't know why no one is ridiculing them for it.

Let's see, crowds shouting "kill them! kill them!", breaking into the building, some of whom were carrying wrist zip ties. I wonder why anyone would have thought they might be planning violence against senators?

Have you seen video of it? If not, you should.

I found the small amount of heckling AOC I saw to be on point, somewhat funny and dont think she was vilified at all.

It doesn't take a genius to be aware of her surroundings and it would have been p clear what the difference between a knock on the door and a raging mob is.

If this is the type of person that's going to be in the govt long after my generation is dead then thank God I'm old, theres not many old school people around that can handle unusual situations without feeling the need victimise themselves instead of doing their job .

Great memes, hilarious in fact !

Yes this is what I have seen as well from looking into it. I should have replied in this thread, my bad. I know it's just a meme, but the idea is being used to try to further turn people away from green energy sources, so that's why I said something.

But yeah, Texas's grid was underprepared full stop, they failed to prepare for extreme cold temperatures and it pretty much failed across all energy sources. And then since it's not connected to the national grid, or properly regulated, the power companies charge based on how much energy there is, so in a time of not nearly enough energy, people got slammed unexpectedly with gargantuan energy bills (I read some guy got charged something like $13,000). Overall, a spectacular failure. And notable is that even the wind turbines that are being blamed by some for the disaster could have been winterized, as they are in more northern states.

great! so we agree biden is not a dictator (41 days in office, 34 eos signed).

i agreed with you that biden was hypocritical on this matter but it remains to be seen how biden will compare with past presidents on use of eos - this may simply be an early spike to undo a bunch of trump eos.

and let's not forget trump bested reagan, bush, clinton, bush and obama - who he lambasted for use of eos - in terms of eos per year of his administration.

two wrongs don't make a right but the trump apologists didn't seem to give a shit about trump's hypocrisy on this matter so we shouldn't be too surprised if biden supporters roll their eyes a little when he's criticised on this one...

ymmv.

It's not as simple as this, small business owners often do not exploit their workers at all. Someone has to start businesses for them to exist for people to work at. For example, my dad was a small business owner, actually it was medium-sized and employed about 150 people, making parts for engines. When Caterpillar, their main client, decided to move all of their supplier business overseas, the company slowly went under. My dad didn't take a salary at all for 2 years at the end so he could avoid laying off as many people as possible for as long as possible, because he felt he had a responsibility to them (which he did). He lost a ton of sleep.

At his wake, a lot of his old employees came and told me stories about him I'd never heard, about how he'd given them a chance when no one else would, how he'd been a mentor, how he got them into treatment for alcoholism and kept them on when he was drunk at the job (in one guy's case), how they'd never felt like a boss cared about them before. I'm just trying to say, it's not black and white, and small businesses are where you're most likely to see owners who are not doing anything bad or taking advantage of anyone.

But yeah oftentimes what the meme says is true, particularly in the case of corporations, where the people at the top are making tremendously more than the employees, and are making decisions to fuck over employees for the sake of profit margins.

Your dad might have acted cool and all, and good on him for not being a shitty person. But this refers specifically to the marxist labour theory of value, where all value is created by labour. Adam Smith and many other liberal economists agree on this btw. So what is the relation of the owner to the worker? The owner has the means of production, which means they are in a position where they can let others work for them, while the worker has only their body and labour to sell.
The owner then will pay the worker a wage, while keeping most of the value generated, called "Surplus Value". What we call "profit" is in fact unpaid labour. And why can the owner do this? Simply because they own the means of production, while the workers do not. And getting to a point where you actually can own a business is often dependent on having the necessary capital to begin with, which pretty much no worker has. So what we see is that a class of owners remains owning the means of production, while workers are still forced to work for them in exchange for a small fraction of what their labour is actually worth.

I see your points. So the alternative, then, is state-owned businesses? All of them state-owned? To me that is the essential problem with Communism... how do you prevent the ideal from failing, how do you prevent corruption and totalitarianism? In the real world I mean? It seems to me to be much more possible with democratic capitalism, provided that society remains vigilant and doesn't allow the slow stripping away of protections. It's true that it does rely on some people being over others, but it seems to work pretty well in some places in Europe, when it is implemented in a manner that leans more towards socialism (ie, regulations are present to protect ordinary workers/citizens, and taxes are focused on social services instead of furthering the wealth of the elites). These things are possible, but it takes vigilance. But all systems of government require vigilance and constantly efforts to prevent corruption. In an ideal world, a monarchy would be the best system, if you had a benevolent and selfless monarch who could rule absolutely and prevent sociopaths from ruining things. But of course, such a system can also easily become absolutely corrupted. I feel similarly about Communism, in an ideal world it would be amazing, but the potential for corruption is very great, and power is easily seized.

No system is perfect, because humans are very imperfect, and sociopaths will always seek to turn any system to their own purposes.

I have a problem with him because Amazon workers get treated like shit and paid poorly. Also Amazon had the gall to ask for donations from users to "help cover their costs" during the beginning of the pandemic... while they were making insane, record-shattering profits. That left a bad taste in my mouth, too.

That said, I use Amazon all the time. So... yeah.
