Oh My God
I have always kept
this pathetic little craft article
I bought it for my daughter
twelve years ago, one January weekend
when we were staying in a special motel
paid for by Crisis Care
Because I'd violently argued with my parents
The police ordered me to stay away
for 48 hours

It's mainly red
and supposed to be hung on the doorknob, of a bedroom
in a home (I'd made us homeless)

It's Red and in other bold kindergarten colours
LIKE green and LIKE yellow and LIKE blue
she pasted the word MUM
installed that word amidst a fuisillade
of stars and triangles and little things
LIKE circles
Because it was very much LIKE we
were trying so hard to be LIKE
something other than doom on an east-wind broomstick

I drank strawberry wine and watched TV
She made me my pennant, she made me MUM

We swam in the pool
Someone asked if her father was Italian
Because she was so tanned

Little tanned person, the truster

Blind, mad, violent
I staggered us
forth
until it was time
for it all to start

There's something profoundly sad about this. Anyhow, I think that was the point if I'm not mistaken.

I get very frightened sometimes ...

I'm sorry to hear that. Well, I hope it's just a keepsake you keep around to remind you of a bad time or perhaps that your daughter looks at you as someone to trust.
