Addiction: a psychological condition in which one constantly craves a particular drug; characterized by drug seeking behaviors, the rationale that " they can stop whenever they want to, " and a continuation of using a particular drug when it's obviously having detrimental effects on the user's physical, social, or emotional health.

Dependence: a physiological response to the constant presence of a particular drug in their bloodstream; physically dependent users will often go into withdrawl and become sick and with particular drugs have really dangerous side effects such as seizures if the drug is stopped abruptly; one can be physically dependent without being psychologically addicted and vice versa.

Withdrawal: a physiological state of being in which a physically dependent drug user (recreational or medicinal) has abruptly stopped the use of a drug or has lowered the dose of their drug too quickly and ad a result is experiencing very unpleasant side effects from doing so; symptoms can range from headaches, to abdominal pain, to vomiting, diarrhea, alternating hot and cold sweats, general emotional distress, craving of the drug, and with certain drugs, seizures.

I disagree.

addiction is much different than dependent.
Can you explain. Is it to differentiate between the physical an the mental?
In my experience they pretty much go hand in. The physical "dependence" makes the mental "addiction" worse.
I mean I know doctors tried to differentiate the two in order to legitimize prescription pill addiction by calling it dependence but other than that I feel if you're dependent then your addicted

gabapentin

The medication works in a way to prevent pain and seizures in certain conditions that affect the nervous system. It is not to be used as a minor pain relief as it only affects the nervous system in certain conditions.

The active ingredient in NEURONTIN capsules, tablets, and oral solution is gabapentin, which has the chemical name 1-(aminomethyl)cyclohexaneacetic acid.

The molecular formula of gabapentin is C9H17NO2 and the molecular weight is 171.24.

Gabapentin is a white to off-white crystalline solid with a pKa1 of 3.7 and a pKa2 of 10.7. It is freely soluble in water and both basic and acidic aqueous solutions. The log of the partition coefficient (n-octanol/0.05M phosphate buffer) at pH 7.4 is –1.25.

How dangerous is gabapentin?

One dangerous side effect recently recognized is that gabapentin prevents the formation of brain synapses and can lead to long-term memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, and other memory-related issues.

long-term memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, and other memory-related issues.

The main characteristic that distinguishes addiction from dependence is the combination of mental and physical dependence with ((( the uncontrollable behavior in obtaining and using a substance. )))

Overcoming an addiction is difficult even for the strongest of people.

ttramadol

Tramadol and codeine are both opiates. Codeine is made from the poppy plant, just like morphine, heroin, and opium. Tramadol is chemically similar to codeine, but it's synthesized from precursor molecules in a lab.

Tramadol (Ultram) and codeine are both opiates and narcotics prescribed for moderate pain. Codeine is also a cough suppressant. Codeine is derived from the poppy plant like other narcotics, including morphine, heroin, and opium. Tramadol, on the other hand, is synthetic, though it is similar to codeine.

edit:
Tramadol is synthetic !!!! duhh

gabapentin

For many individuals, gabapentin (also known as Neurontin) is a necessary medication. It can be used to treat seizures, neuropathic pain, restless leg syndrome, and a number of other issues. Unfortunately, though, like most medications, gabapentin has a number of side effects, some of which are mild but many of which can be serious, even dangerous.

Mild Gabapentin Side Effects
The National Library Of Medicine states that the drug “may cause side effects” that can be uncomfortable or frustrating to the user. Many of the most common side effects are not dangerous and can be treated by having your doctor reduce your prescription or prescribe another type of medication to minimize them. However, you should always talk to your doctor first when you begin to experience these issues. Never stop taking gabapentin altogether, as the drug can cause a severe withdrawal syndrome.

The mild side effects associated with gabapentin include:
Flu-like symptoms are a common side effect of gabapentin.
  • Tiredness
  • Weakness
  • Drowsiness
  • Unsteadiness
  • Blurred vision or double vision
  • Unusual eye movements
  • Uncontrollable shaking of a body part
  • Jerky movements
  • Headaches
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Heartburn
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, and calves
  • Pain in the back or joints
  • Flu-like symptoms (including runny nose, sneezing, coughing, sore throat, etc.)
Less common side effects of gabapentin include:
  • Back pain
  • Frequent urination
  • Increased appetite
  • Decreased libido
  • Itchy eyes or red eyes that may tear up or produce discharge
  • Bloated or full feeling
  • Earache
  • Excessive gas
  • Flushed, dry skin
  • Increased sensitivity to pain
  • Increased sensitivity to touch
  • Indigestion
  • Voice changes
  • Weight gain WHAT ??
  • Sweating
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness

Serious Side Effects of Gabapentin
Gabapentin can cause serious issues as well, some of which are direct effects of the more common side effects associated with normal use of the drug. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, the “sleepiness and dizziness” often caused by normal gabapentin use can “increase the occurrence of accidental injury.” As a patient taking gabapentin, one must remember this possible side effect and be very careful during the times where the drug is active in one’s system.

In addition, gabapentin may cause other serious side effects, including rashes, hives, itching, swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, or mouth, hoarseness, or problems swallowing and breathing. If these side effects begin to occur, it is likely that you are allergic to gabapentin. You should seek medical attention right away by calling 911.

As gabapentin is a medication that treats seizures, it can, in very rare cases, cause seizures to occur. For this reason, it is very important that you stay with your correct dosage and you do not take more or less of the drug than you were prescribed or stop taking the medication altogether.

Some adult users may also experience mood changes, signs of dementia, symptoms of anxiety or depression, feelings of agitation or hostility, restlessness, hyperactivity, and self-harming or suicidal thoughts. If these occur, inform your doctor immediately.

gabapentin

Why does a person take gabapentin?
Gabapentin is a medication that is used to treat different types of neuropathic pain as well as to control seizures in individuals who have epilepsy. It can also be used to treat the symptoms of restless leg syndrome. Gabapentin is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants and treats seizures by decreasing abnormal activity in the brain.

So I went to the doctor with a new wrist brace that was givin to me from from the hospital this Sunday, four days ago. I asked for pain medication and got gabapentin instead.

It's a two hour drive to the nearest "pain management clinic" and I have been struggling with trying to get a referral to even get in. When I request a proper referral to get a proper appointment these are the results so far.

Some of the doctors answers have been so far . . . . . Put your hand in jelly like the fibromyalgia patients do.

"You need to cowboy up ! " no medication for youu.

One doctor just stares and won't say anything and then when I get up to leave says when you are ready to schedule your checkups make an appointment and let me know.

Another said I am not going to talk politics with you.

And yet another (woman) said I am not giving out any narcotics.

One said to literally hang upside down on some kind of metal bar contraption that costs hundreds of dollars not covered by the medical insurance system.

. . . . . . and I am getting sick from it.

I did get into the bone and joint specialist again through the urgent care doctor.

The urgent care doctor said that a primary care physician can authorize and recommend you to the pain management clinic that is a two hour drive in one way and then two more hours to drive back. and then when I do this the cycle of excuses continues. They can't prescribe narcotics because I will become an addict and on and on and on.

I do, however, have a follow up appointment at the bone and joint specialist institute in three weeks from now.

When I do return in three weeks I will ask them then if I can get a referral to the pain management clinic that is a two hour drive and the closest help around.

The bone and joint clinic did give me naproxen with several refills. It's just a matter of time before it will start hurting my stomach again.

I sure am hoping they will agree to give me the referral but usually i just get sent to the primary care physicians first who then start with the excuses again to hang upside down on metal bars and on and on and on until I just break down and cry like a little cunt.

I got a prescription from Urgent Care for gabapentin 100 mg. But I am terrified to take it when needed as prescribed.
So I am going to just take a large consumption of naproxin as usual. Until my stomach starts to hurt from it again.
I do have few left over hydrocodone that have been helping me live and work and to get by. It will soon run out. . . . . and that is when the gabapentin will most likely have to be take.

I have never taken this before and I am terrified to do so and do not know what it will do to me !?! ☹☹☹☹☹☹☹☹☹☹☹☹☹☹☹

But now their own pitfalls are becoming clear. Though gabapentin and baclofen are much safer alternatives to opioids, recent research suggests that they’re not as safe as some doctors might have hoped, especially in combination with other sedating medications. The findings are a frustrating turn that suggests there’s still no silver bullet for chronic pain.

Not only does gabapentin appear to exacerbate or create overdose risk, it also doesn’t work that well for chronic pain. A review published last year found that gabapentin is ineffective for treating back pain.

oh dear

Well this has been a very enlightened post? I am on 300 mgs of Gabipentin one a day at bedtime. I have been off hydrocodon For two weeks, Feel like shit physically , but mentally better. So now I need to worry about Gabipentin?. The sad part is I can still have my 100 Norco a month? Pain in my shoulders, neck from radiation, and age related back and knees. Is the pain from stopping daily 10-30 mgs Norco? Older age 60?, withdrawals?.
