US Politics The 2020 Trump Presidency Thread

The mean verbal ability score for Trump supporters was 6.15 words correct, while the mean verbal ability score for Clinton supporters was 5.69 correct, a difference of nearly a half a question on a 10-question test. This moderate difference is statistically significant at p<.0005.

Further, Trump supporters score significantly higher on verbal ability (6.15 correct) than the rest of the public combined (5.70 correct), whereas Clinton supporters score significantly lower on verbal ability (5.69 correct) than the rest of the public combined (5.98 correct).

(I am not surprised by this. I speak to a lot of people on all sides of the political spectrum. Smugness and condescension doesn't equal intelligence).

Taking it at face value, seems quite plausible that's being thrown off by there being a disproportionate/larger number of poorer people voting left wing, and poorer people tend to be less educated. It doesn't in itself mean anything as far as the rightness or wrongness of the political alignment. Just that, if so, poor people on the whole, are more likely to vote left than right.

Lies damn lies and statistics.

What's definitely bullshit though is saying that someone who can answer more science questions with better use of English is "smarter". It means, again, that they're probably better educated. Which isn't the same as intelligence.

And finally, it's just a bad point to make. Because it says absolutely nothing about any actual position or opinion. It's just pathetic "people who disagree with me are dumb" bullshit.

And yes it's just as bullshit when people come up with ways to show the reverse conclusion of conservatives being less intelligent, which people also do all the time.

The counter is that white supremecists, redneck deplorables ARE better educated. Somewhat a weak argument when applied to the 'general stereotypes'.

Personally, I think a 10 question quiz isn't sufficient for such an assessment, and the pool of test candidates chosen is always questionable to me.

Same goes for people traditionally believing those with English accents (or, laughably, mistaking an Aussie accent for a UK one) are smarter and American accents are dumber. The dumbness is in the listener placing value on an accent and not the quality of the answer itself.

SOTU was pretty wild:
  • Trump’s annual address was bookended by two moments of tension between the president and the House speaker. When he arrived for his speech, Trump appeared to reject a handshake from Nancy Pelosi, and the speaker later tore up her copy of the president’s remarks as he was wrapping up.
  • Trump’s speech was built around some made-for-television moments. Most notably, he awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to controversial radio host Rush Limbaugh and reunited a military family attending the event.
  • Trump made it through the speech without mentioning impeachment, marking a rare moment of restraint from the unpredictable president. He is likely waiting until tomorrow, when the Senate is expected to acquit him, to take a victory lap.
  • Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer and Texas congresswoman Veronica Escobar delivered the Democratic responses to the State of the Union, but their remarks were overshadowed by the tension between Trump and Pelosi.

Speech was a typical pile o' shit, a nice mix of his usual soft nationalism, lurid anecdotes like ISIS sex slaves & psychopathic illegal immigrant murderers, and just general falsehoods, like his claims regarding healthcare and social security. It was classic Trump for sure

I wish Pelosi hadn’t ripped up her copy of the SOTU. She’s been a voice of reason, something (which I never thought I’d believe, much less post). Now that’s over. But maybe it had to come to this, or maybe she’s just having a bad week. Whichever it is, I hope she gets her groove back.

I knew that the timing of the impeachment was some intra-Democratic Party thing to screw Senator Sanders again -- the idea is to tie up Senators in Washington so they cannot kiss hands and shake babies, with the exact timing being a leap of faith on their part, I guess . . .it knocked Senator Klobuchar clean out of the delegate count in the Iowa Caucus (which looks like it happened to Mr Biden too) and it was a clusterfuck too -- come on people -use paper ballots, use Optical Character Recognition machines if you must, but that app they tried to use was the source of the hurricane of fuckery which still has people counting ballots almost 36 hours later.

Now, I just saw Speaker Pelosi rip up paper and make some kind of face . . . not the best thing to do, but she has a lot of nervous energy coming from all the work she has to do in order prevent an 1894-style schism in the Democratic Party. I am thinking, of course, as a silver lining, that she is almost certain to be an even bigger wildcat in the sack than she was 28, 30 years ago.

People can lie and spread confusion, to what end is all the more murky now, but it does not change the fact that in 2016 that somewhere from 22 to 34 per cent of the Sanders vote went to Mr Trump in the general election; I suppose that in 2020 that could be 55 per cent and 80+ per cent of Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard's voters too, with others leaking into the Green, Libertarian and other parties.

You know how Europe has a large influx of refugees and that the US worsens this by bombing and destabilizing their home countries to weaken Europe's economic position?
For the same reason, trump should get a second term.
Let America's greed rip their once proud nation apart.

If Osama Bin Laden had had the choice between "fly the pane into the white house" or "fly trump into the white house" he would have opted for the latter.

American people are good people just like anyone, but their government as it is should cease to function so it must be recreated from scratch. Trump is the agent for that destruction.

Oh yeah, because before Trump the system worked so well staffed with such good people. Look how deep the swamp is, Trump had virtually nobody to choose from to fill important positions. It's funny how Trump is virtually the last hope to save a broken system yet his haters blame him for creating the conditions that he inherited.

I have to believe he had better options to appoint than corporate shills whose careers previously were spent working against the agencies they were appointed to.

well when he appoints people with relevant experience they end up fired or quitting within a year and turning on him. See Kelley, tillerson, bolton, etc etc etc. He "hires the best people" and those people turn on him when they realize when a dangerous and ignorant lunatic he is. The people that stick with him seem to end up in jail a little too often for their taste perhaps..

...so corporate shills it is.

^ indeed.

Trump had virtually nobody to choose from to fill important positions...
that is such lame, trump-apologist b.s.

during the campaign trump boasted that he'd "surround myself only with the best and most serious people" and "We want top-of-the-line professionals". he obviously didn't think he had "virtually nobody to choose from" so it's curious that you're making excuses for him.

his administration has been an utter shambles - the revolving door on the white house has been in constant action. his first national security advisor lasted less than 4 weeks!

on top of that, he pits staff against each other, publicly insults people who work for him and who he appointed and seems willing to throw pretty much anybody under the bus to avoid taking responsibility.

"i hire only the best people"
he sure doesn't think much of many of these great people he's hiring!

but it's always somebody else's fault... it's the democrats! it's the deep state! it's never-trumpers!

maybe he should listen to this guy:

Working for Trump would be a nightmare. Narcissists are always the worst people to work with.

Long twitter post/thread by this lady, pointing out some of the how/why Trump communicates as he does, and why it is more effective than what Dems like Pelosi or Hillary do:

Could be a smidge of sexism sprinkled in too. Loud obnoxious men are effective. Loud and obnoxious women are just loud and obnoxious.

Apparently joking about sexually assaulting women is more socially acceptable than ripping up paper? Well here’s a little known fact: we girls rip up paper in the locker room all the time. We’re practically shredders. Okay? Okay.
