It depends on how you're bullied. If it's verbal/mental, that's how you defend yourself. Only get physical if they are bullying you physically. A lot of my bulling was verbal but this one guy who used to actually hit me (not beat me up but hit me hard enough to leave swelling/bruises) until one day in P.E. I out of nowhere marched up to him and smacked him the the face with a cricket bat as hard as I could. I smashed his nose and cracked his left orbital socket and got suspended for two weeks but he never bothered me again.
Weirdly, when I did go back to school he apologized for all the time's he'd bullied me and I apologized for what I did and we shook on it and while we were never exactly friends, we were cool with each other after that. I guess he either a) respected me for fighting back or b) realized what it was like to be on the receiving end.

^I did what I did after reading that book btw. Also btw, I don't advocate violence unless it's a last resort.

EDIT: I'm actually a calm, friendly and very laid-back person. This stuff I've been talking about are rare isolated incidents over 23 years of life.
