Harm Reduction ⫸Should I Try HEROIN?⫷

If you could just try once and leave it there, I would probably say "yes" to trying most substances. On the other hand, it usually gets out of hand before one realizes that it morphed into a problem. After this phase, people usually are able to stop using without devastating withdrawal symptoms because it's the first time that they get dependent on heroin (or other strong opiates). Some get scared or they weigh the pros and cons better and stop completely or use it once in a while (which is again quite risky in the long term).
Others (this seems to be a much larger group) get cocky and start using again, thinking the second withdrawal will be as easy. It gets much harder mentally and much more intense physically after the initial dependency. By this time it becomes an addiction and thre's not much cons left other than the relief from withdrawal.
It becomes an all life consuming problem (monetary, time, relationships, ...) and by the time you solve that problem, many of your (usually most productive) years will be gone.
I still love heroin but I would sincerely advise anybody to not try it. Opiates are great if one really needs it medically (for physical or mental issues) or can use it sparingly here and there but this isn't the norm; it's not worth taking the risk. As mentioned before, there is a variety of chemicals that give pleasure, euphoria, relief and different perceptions on life. All above comments about the reality of heroin use should be taken serious before deciding to try it.
Good luck, stay safe (and sorry for my English; it's not my mother language).

if your taking heroin or any other opiate for emotional pain then it is not worth it.
if you rly need it for physical pain yes try it but id strongly advice trying to get morphine or fentanyl patch if its for pain route.
people say heroin gets rids of there problems but your problems are still there on top of dependcy/addiction when u try go withot

I've been using opiates for 15yrs now and bcoz I don't inject it it's not really a problem for me.i used to smoke 1/2g of pure Afghani a day but I was getting it cheap so I never went through bullshit trying to get it & never stole to get it.but with me when I was younger I seen what using needles and having an addiction was like which put me off being like that.and I realized that even though I had heaps of money and hi quality gear it would runout and it would be unsustainable to continue trying to maintain heroin so I switched to ms contin then to codeine.ive always been able to get high for cheap I honestly don't know how one could maintain an i.v. habit without spending a good deal of time feeling like shit hanging out trying to get money and then fucking around waiting to score.that sounds like a shitty existence. to me if your in that position it would no longer be fun and if your spending every waking minute hanging out trying to score and the only releif you get takes so long to get that you fall asleep by the time you get it only to get a few hours of overpriced relief followed by having to repeat the cycle bcoz your sick it's time to quit.if u don't want to quit get on the methadone program.am I glad I tried heroin? Can't say no.i suppose I could say yes.but I am a rare individual and just because I don't fuck my life with doesn't mean that my friends who I started with aren't fukt from it and iving smack sleeping in the gutter.

If it going to smoke or snort it fine try it.but just realize how depressing and unpleasant smack addiction can end up if your willpower isn't right up there so make a deal with yourself and try it once and enjoy it.then go back to doing whatever you usually do.if u already i.v. drugs then I'd say probably better you don't try it as your willpower has obviously already led to a needle in your arm which makes you halfway to becoming fukt on smack already.thats not to say that a I.v. meth addict who tries it won't say that was good and go right back to meth never to touch heroin again it's just starting from the halfway point that's the risk.just don't start doing it everyday and you'll be ok unless you have an addictive personality.

does anyone on here have experience with chipping? and I'm not talking about taking it "just on the weekends" because that will most certainly get you addicted. i'm talking about every 3-4 months.
i know such a situtation can easily turn into "just once a month" and so on to addiction, but i have control of my drug usage (my friend often tell me this) and have been using opiates for 10 months without problems (albeit not the best ones, that give you more euphoria etc.).
i'd like to use H on special occasions or every 3-4-5 months, but i'm afraid of addiction.
and yes i've tried heroin.

so does anyone have experience with this? (both bad and good ones)

You posted this about five years ago, still doing every few months or???

If I'm honest, that seems like a pretty pointless deal to make to me.

In my experience, a severe heroin habit comes about through a million small steps closer to it, not one giant leap.

And saying "I'll try it once and stop" strikes me as yet another small step.

I'm not saying nobody takes that particular small steps and then stops. I am saying that I think even for those people, it was probably less a question of willpower and more a question of innate susceptibility to certain classes of drugs.

While willpower is a part of addiction, I think it's a very small part. Again speaking only from my experience, addiction is less about breaking willpower, and more about tricking what it is you're willing to do in the first place.

Having the willpower to stop isn't gonna matter if you don't really want to excersize that willpower to begin with.

I always say that "choice is a funny thing". Most people would probably say that to suggest "nobody chooses to become an addict" and "nobody becomes an addict who didn't choose too" can't both be true simultaneously. I'm not so sure.

^^ This is exactly what I did.

In the beginning I stuck to snorting the shit every now and then. Just a quarter gram of #4 and that would last myself and partner 2 days then wouldn't touch it again for a month or so.
Then I had the bright idea of banging it. I'd iv'd meth a hand full of times years earlier but nothing more then that.
Was so paranoid about doing too much I didn't really get much out of it as it was too low of a dose.
Didn't iv it again until 3 or 4 months ago, thought I'd try it again and it more or less snow balled from there. Was using for around 6 days straight then stopped for 3 days with very mild wds, just a little agitated and uncomfortable.
From there I was buying balls and selling some to mates to cover part of the costs. Kinda realised wtf i was doing after 3 weeks and stopped, wds were fucking shit (hate to imagine what it's like for someone on for months or years).
Didn't sleep, didn't eat. I was heavily into the gym before starting this 1 and 3 week binge. Was a muscular 105ish. Stopped going, lost roughly 20kg. Some point in the first week had the bright idea of grabbing a half g of meth for a pick me up, felt great for the 3 days I was using it then coming down off that as well as the mild-mod wds that I was still going through was fucking hell.

So now roughly 4 weeks or so from the start of the wds, I've been back and forth between the h and meth. Not on one for long enough to get hooked, I will only use h for a few days before giving it a break.

I believe you can use it once and not again snorting it. But once you try the needle and give yourself a good shot where you feel that warmth radiate through your body you'll probably do it again.. and again.. and again.

I guess I'm at that tipping point now, I could stop and feel shitty for a week or two as im not physically dependant. I would say I'm psychologically addicted to hard drugs at the moment. Do I want to stop? No not really. Life seems so mundane without them.

So no, don't try heroin.

Ive done heroin and propably will in the future. If that shit was more readily available in Finland, you fucking bet Id use all of my money on it.
I have only once IVed and that was a mistake, so I have to be really fucking careful with how much I use opiates tho.

Should I Try Heroin? MegaThread

overcoming_heroin_addiction_helping_others.jpg

With the recent abundance of “Should I try heroin?” or “Is trying H a good idea?” threads, we have decided it would be worth it to create a megathread discussing the topic, where all posts relating to such debate can be compiled.

If you have this question, or any question specifically about your first time trying H that falls under the category of “Should a non-heroin user suddenly decide to try H for the first time?” please post here.

For basic info about heroin itself, please refer to the Heroin Megathread. For info on IV and technique/complications, refer to the IV Megathread.

So, to start off, the basic number one question on your minds if you’re looking at this thread and debating this choice is,

Should I try heroin for the first time?

Obviously, the short and to the point answer would be… NO FUCKING WAY. Of course, we were all young/inexperienced once before we first tried heroin, so we know things are often a lot more complicated then “just say no”.

Some internal questions to ask yourself first:

- Why do you want to try heroin to begin with?

Many people, especially young people, have this glamorous and romantic image of heroin in their head. They see the idea of being a “junky” as this very chic and glorified notion. Maybe your favorite musicians all did heroin, maybe your favorite movies are about heroin, etc.

Using dope is far from glamorous. The reality of heroin addiction is brutal, grotesque, and filthy.

- What do you seek to gain from trying heroin?

Really, what is it you think this drug is going to add to your life? Or are you just bored and want to check it off your list? Here’s where being really honest with yourself is a must. After reading this whole thread, and many of the other heroin related threads on BL, you should have a pretty clear idea of just how ravaged ones life can become from heroin. What positives do you see coming from making this choice?

heroin_stamps.jpg

Justifications to try heroin:

1. I’m only going to try it once.

Famous last words. When evaluating this decision, remember that basically EVERY heroin addict in the world said this at one point in the beginning. Nobody is born with the goal of becoming a raging dope fiend. It is a progressive path and it does not happen over night.

Heroin is one of the most additive drugs, and has ruined so many lives for a reason. The honest chances of you only trying this drug once are incredibly slim to almost non-existent.

2. I will be able to control my use. I won’t get addicted.

Again, this is also something we have all said before. Believe it or not, even long-term heroin addicts sometimes use this justification to relapse. For the beginning user, you may think that because you’ve tried other drugs here and there and didn’t become wrapped up in them, that you’ll be able to control your heroin use as well. This is an incredibly dangerous notion. It is not about will power. Heroin is an incredibly powerful drug with a high so intense, that it makes you want to continue using it, even though it is destroying everything in your life.

Those of us who have been using for a very long time have come across thousands of addicts in our time. Do you want to know how many we have met that were ever able to control their use or “chip” for any real period of time? Practically none. Sure you may be able to hold it together for a few months or even a few years, but almost everybody slips up, and before you know it, you are in way too deep.

3. If I do get addicted, I’ll just stop. How hard can it be?

Stopping heroin is one of the hardest things you’ll ever do in your life. Not only is the psychological aspect incredibly intense and all consuming, but also once you develop a physical dependency, you will have withdrawals, and that is something you cannot be prepared for.

Coming off heroin is an incredibly painful and brutal experience, one that only gets worse the more times you do it. You will not be able to just shake it off. This is why the majority of people who become dependent on heroin, end up having a life long battle.

4. I don’t have regular access to it, so I can’t do it everyday, even if I wanted to.

This is a very common justification. Many beginning users considering trying heroin have come across it out of the blue or have to travel very far to get it. They think that this will force them into being casual users or never trying it again.

The truth is that after getting a taste for heroin, you will slowly start to work on getting more opportunities. Many users end up driving hours and hours from home just to score dope. Believe this, you WILL find a way to do it again, even if it is very sporadic at first, eventually you will get a source for it, and all bets will be off.

Common first-timer questions:

- How long can I use for without getting withdrawals?

This varies from person to person. However, for the majority of people, in the beginning, it takes a good few weeks-months of using everyday before a physical dependency is developed. For some people it happens much sooner, others later.

The danger is you never know when that extra day of using is going to be too much. The more you use heroin, the more your body gets used to it. The fact of the matter is, if you use heroin everyday, or with any real regularity greater than once or twice a week, you will eventually become dependent.

Also, after you pick up your first habit, you become dependent again much faster in the future. It will eventually get to the point where even using 2 days in a row, is enough to create withdrawals.

- How fast does an overdose happen?

There is a common misconception that OD’s, especially from IV heroin, happen instantly. While this is true in a lot of instances, overdoses can happen at any point even up to an hour after using (and if one is redosing throughout a short period of time, can happen even after an hour or more).

- Do you get addicted after one use?

While you do not develop a physical dependency after one use (it takes many days in the beginning of using in a row for this to happen) a psychological addiction can start to develop very early. It is a myth that a person becomes addicted in any way after one use, but it is true that’s all it takes sometimes to start you down a path of future addiction.

***For some stories on how heroin (and other drugs) have impacted peoples lives, check out the Personal Accounts of Addiction thread. There are some very real and raw entries there on the reality of how heroin can destroy your life.

***Also check out the Case Studies thread, and realize how easily this all ends up happening.

Note: This thread was meant as a very basic guide. Obviously there is much more to say and talk about, so if you have any specific questions relating to the topic, feel free to make a post here.

Good luck, all.

who can talk anybody that does drugs for real out of trying a new one? but you heard how good it feels bla bla bla? wait till you find out how bad u WILL feel after you start and if you are the 1% to kick it. your mentally fucked for life. it will always be in the back of your head.

I've always kinda felt like trying heroin is one of those mostly preset things in a person's personality. And if they're someone who's reached the point of even asking "should I try it", it's probably already too late. Whatevers gonna happen is gonna happen.

But I'll still try and talk people out of it. I don't expect to succeed, but the consequences are too severe not to try, regardless of the odds.

I would do with the short answer no way

I think another question implicit in the OP's original post "Should I try heroin?" is: Can using heroin once make you addicted?

The answer is no. You cannot become physically dependent on or addicted to heroin after one use.

I wouldn't recommend being cavalier about using heroin but it does seem reasonable that you can try it once and experience what it's like without it developing into a habit.

Well, you're entitled to your own point of view. But I disagree.

Sure, you can't become physically dependent to heroin from using it once. We can both agree on that.

But becoming addicted to it from one use? Well, I don't want to get into an argument about the meaning of addiction as a word, so instead I'll focus on the part that really matters.

Can using heroin, even once, be an experience that you can't then forget, which will compel you down a path towards a highly destructive habit? Yes. Absolutely it can.

And that is what matters. The psychology of it is far more powerful than the physical dependence. If the problem were only physical dependence, then nobody would go back to heroin after escaping that dependence. But people do, all the time.

Because the experience, both from the drug, and the way the drug interacts with the rest of your day to day life, can easily result in a relationship with the drug that can be extremely difficult to ever fully escape.

Some people can become "addicted after one hit". They represent a minority of the using population but they exist. I refer to them as the "puzzle piece addicts". Anyone who describes their first experience with a certain drug as, "I was like an incomplete puzzle and the drug was the missing piece", or similar terms about being an incomplete human being before the drug, are usually some of the most intractable fiends IME

For whatever reason, I decided to start taking drugs again after my 60th birthday. I took a variety of stuff that I had done when I was younger. I also took heroin about 10 times, mostly snorting and once smoking. I wasn’t really impressed. It wasn’t the quality as a friend who has a lot more experience told me it was good stuff, or the quantity, as I got really zonked once. I just didnt really think it was anything special, so I won’t be doing it again. I’m glad I tried it but really couldn’t see why it’s so highly rated. As for addiction, I find cocaine much more mentally addictive.

The bioavailability of heroin is 100% when injected intravenously. That’s when you feel the warm euphoric rush that no other drug can match.
