The 2019 Trump Presidency Thread

where were they when the bush administration ushered in warrantless surveillance in 2001?

I don't think gun-bros really understand deep-state big brother technology surveillance. I'm not sure I fully do either.

Either way I'm sure Uncle Sam knows all my fetish porn predilections and 0 fucks are given here.

That's a solid question, but ADDITIONAL OBSERVATIONS:

CNN has not hit home on this AFAIK and are not ringing the alarm bells. They should be, everyone should be. The idea that he might go for "office for ever" or "a third term" has been tossed about before but they should have been watching the Trump Rally and heard him say it, live, and immediately go on an offensive. This leads me to believe that they 1) did hear it, 2) are not going to nail home on it, 3) specifically because there's no liberal media and/or do not want to cause a civil-war type panic.

Perhaps it is just me perceiving it as this serious, but it is and I'm surprised there isn't more discussion on it. Perhaps there is and I am just not looking hard enough.

well, if one has avowed oneself to "protect the constitution at all costs" maybe time to reread the 4th amendment (and any other amendments beyond the 2nd :) )

If you could (because I'm memory-hazy) remind me exactly what you're referring to? The NSA activities or the Patriot Act or something else? I seem to have a hazy memory of whatever the controversy was.

Congress swiftly passed legislation to strengthen national security.
Can we really blame Bush if there was ...

the Act passed the House by a vote of 357–66
Seems like it was the American will... :\

Sadly. Even if it was the wrong move.

You might be referring to a *lot* of GWB flops (and there were many!) so do enlighten me and I'm all ears.

Exactly. I used to know a few of those militia types. And honestly, from what I've seen. I think they're all talk. I think they're more a military themed gun club than they are an army.

Always talking about how little has to happen before they rise up and take the country back, but frankly, if most of them really meant what they said, they'd have done something by now.

In truth, just like how people who play military video games don't really wanna be in a war, neither do they. Regardless of what they say.

Things would have to get a hell of a lot worse than they are now for that to change.

But putting that aside, I agree that I think it's unlikely that anything will come from trumps remarks.

Wilbur Ross Threatened to Fire NOAA Officials Who Didn’t Back Up Trump’s Fake Hurricane Warnings

Trump has continued tweeting maps and attacks on the media's coverage of his factually wrong claims. As recently as Saturday, he posted, "I would like very much to stop referring to this ridiculous story, but the LameStream Media just won’t let it alone."

His crusade against the National Weather Service reached ridiculous heights last Wednesday, when he appeared in the Oval Office with a map of Dorian's path, dated August 29. The map showed Dorian hitting Florida, and Trump doodled a small bubble with a Sharpie, extending the hurricane's path by a small nub onto Alabama's coast, setting off another round of coverage and memes on "Sharpiegate."

Still, that wasn't the full extent of his administration's efforts to help him save face. According to a new story from The New York Times, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross actually threatened to fire members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) if they didn't refute the National Weather Service's correction. (The National Weather Service is under the NOAA, which is itself part of the Department of Commerce.) Per the Times:

Mr. Ross, the commerce secretary, intervened two days later, early last Friday, according to the three people familiar with his actions. Mr. Ross phoned Neil Jacobs, the acting administrator of NOAA, from Greece where the secretary was traveling for meetings and instructed Dr. Jacobs to fix the agency’s perceived contradiction of the president. Dr. Jacobs objected to the demand and was told that the political staff at NOAA would be fired if the situation was not fixed, according to the three individuals, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the episode.
NOAA then issued an unsigned letter disavowing the Birmingham office's claim that Alabama was not at risk, saying, "The Birmingham National Weather Service’s Sunday morning tweet spoke in absolute terms that were inconsistent with probabilities from the best forecast products available at the time." The agency also distributed a memo instructing personnel to "only stick with official National Hurricane Center forecasts if questions arise from some national level social media posts which hit the news this afternoon" and not to "provide any opinion." One NOAA meteorologist told The Washington Post, "This is the first time I’ve felt pressure from above to not say what truly is the forecast." He added, "One of the things we train on is to dispel inaccurate rumors and ultimately that is what was occurring—ultimately what the Alabama office did is provide a forecast with their tweet, that is what they get paid to do."

The prioritization of a leader's ego over accurate public information on a weather emergency drew comparisons to authoritarian countries. "Yup, the Commerce Secretary threatened to fire leaders of a scientific agency for daring to tell the truth about a WEATHER forecast, because President Trump was wrong about it. It's like an old Soviet joke, except in 2019 America," tweeted The New Yorker's Susan Glasser.
A spokesperson for the Commerce Department told the Times that Ross never threatened to fire anyone over the corrections, but refused to answer when asked if Ross had indeed been in touch with Jacobs or if he'd instructed the NOAA not to refute the president. That aside, it's no secret that the Trump administration has been aggressively purging scientists: According to an executive order Trump signed earlier this year, the entire federal government has to cut its 1,057 scientific advisory committees to a maximum of 350 by the end of September.

The Commerce Department's Inspector General announced that it will be investigating the NOAA's Friday letter that claimed Alabama was still at risk from Dorian. In a statement, Inspector General Peggy E. Gustafson said that the National Weather Service "must maintain standards of scientific integrity" and that the current circumstances "call into question the NWS’s processes, scientific independence, and ability to communicate accurate and timely weather warnings and data to the nation in times of national emergency."

An anonymous senior administration official told the Times that the National Weather Service was, for some reason, deliberately lying about the threat posed to Alabama in order to embarrass the president. The official gave no evidence, and Hurricane Dorian never hit Alabama.

Talk about an ego trip... Jesus. 8(

Also a very concerning precedent of abuse of power to control information released to the public. Even though I think the only reason is because Trump can't stand to look like an idiot, rather than something more nefarious. Yet it's still very problematic behavior.

right? it's evocative of the whole inauguration crowd size thing but this is a far more dangerous precedent.

it would be hilarious if it wasn't so troubling.

file under "trump's not racist": MAN TRUMP CALLED “MY AFRICAN AMERICAN” DITCHES HIM OVER WHOLE RACISM THING

Gregory Cheadle is also leaving the Republican party for defending the president’s unambiguously racist (my emphasis) comments and “pro-white agenda.”

Speaking to PBS’s Yamiche Alcindor, Cheadle, a 62-year-old real estate broker, said that he’s ditching Trump, as well as the entire Republican Party, after coming to the realization that the GOP is all about a “pro-white agenda” that uses black people like himself as “political pawns.” According to Alcindor, the straw that broke the camel’s back for Cheadle was watching Republicans line up to defend Trump’s racist attacks on four freshman congresswoman of color who he told to “go back” to “the crime-infested places from which they came,” as well has his attacks on Representative Elijah Cummings, whose Baltimore district Trump described in a series of rants as “disgusting, rat and rodent infested” where “no human being would want to live.”

“President Trump is a rich guy who is mired in white privilege to the extreme,” Cheadle, who has been a Republican since 2001, told Alcindor. “Republicans are too sheepish to call him out on anything and they are afraid of losing their positions and losing any power themselves.”

cokie roberts passed yesterday.

there were respectful, classy tributes from past presidents, republican and democrat:

bill clinton said:
I liked and respected Cokie Roberts very much. She understood people and politics. For nearly half a century, she was an institution in American journalism—tough but fair, insightful, and with a voice all her own. She'll be missed.
george w bush said:
We are deeply saddened that Cokie Roberts is no longer with us. She covered us for decades as a talented, tough, and fair reporter. We respected her drive and appreciated her humor. She became a friend. We know Steve, their children, and grandchildren are heartbroken. They have our sincere sympathies.
barack obama said:
She was a trailblazing figure; a role model to young women at a time when the profession was still dominated by men; a constant over forty years of a shifting media landscape and changing world, informing voters about the issues of our time and mentoring young journalists every step of he way... She will be missed – and we send our condolences to her family.

oh, and our current malignant narcissist of a president chose to make her death about himself as usual:

donald trump said:
She never treated me nicely. But I would like to wish her family well. She was a professional, and I respect professionals. I respect you guys a lot, you people a lot. She was a real professional. Never treated me well, but I certainly respect her as a professional.

indeed.

trump administration continues to place industry profit and privilege ahead of public health and the environment. oh, and fuck states' rights too:

^it's because emissions aren't a threat to public health or the environment. Focus on actual pollution

DONALD TRUMP'S APPROVAL RATING SURPASSES OBAMA'S, NOT JUST ON RASMUSSEN REPORTS

President Donald Trump's job approval rating this week averaged across major polls surpassed that of his predecessor President Barack Obama at the same time eight years ago, giving some actual good news to Trump who is known to cite only conservative-leaning polls to bolster his image.

Trump's approval rating on Wednesday was 44.3 percent, according to a Real Clear Politics average of more than a half-dozen major polls. That is higher than Obama's average approval rating of 43.9 percent on September 18, 2011, by the same measure.

Looks like Trump is more popular than the hugely-popular Obama. Now imagine if the media sucked Trump's dick the same way they did Obama's???

Focus on actual pollution

But emissions from cars IS "actual pollution" even if you totally disregard carbon emissions. It contributes to smog which is a very real problem. In the 80s, smog around major cities was really bad, not as bad as it is in Chinese cities now but dense and choking, leading to a lot more sickness and even deaths to those susceptible. Not to mention chronic damage that can lead to things like cancer. Same with coal power and all burning of fossil fuels. Of course we can't just suddenly cut fossil fuels but one thing I can tell you is that revoking laws that make their emissions cleaner is a step in the wrong direction.

^I agree with that, but they frame it as "carbon dioxide pollution" which is untrue.

So we focus on
The Trump Administration is revoking California’s Federal Waiver on emissions in order to produce far less expensive cars for the consumer

where we know Cali is more enviro concerned than the majority of the world (right or wrong, it is undeniable that they legislate harder than anyone else)...I'll stay out of how damaging the car exhaust is, and ask why nobody wants to discuss the

while at the same time making the cars substantially SAFER.

The argument here is that a light car and a heavy car get in a crash, the passengers of the light car are inherently at more risk because physics. But that doesn't account for all the safety improvements in today's lighter cars. Yes heavy can smash light, but light can often avoid more accidents. What's the view of CEPS members?
