Mass Shootings and Gun Debate 2019ish

Yesterday, the New York Times printed a story about a failed terror attack in Oslo, Norway, and said the attempted shooter posted on 8chan beforehand.

Do you catch the problem, here?

8chan has been down for a week!

^^Perhaps the shooter in Oslo posted on 8chan in the past? Or perhaps it is just fake news *shrugs*



I was visiting with my brother-in-law yesterday. He's a veteran who works for a local firearm distributor (I think they do custom work for people's weapons, cool store) and of course they have a plethora of weapons they also sell. Yesterday, a lady called up there asking him, "Do you guys have any AK-47s?" And he was like, "Yeah, of course we've got one available right now." And she told him, "You guys should really get rid of that and destroy it. That's just good wisdom." And he was like, "Ummmm.... ok?" and she hung up.

This was possibly one of the silliest things I've ever heard 'round here. He lives in one of the heaviest armed cities in the nation and no one there has ever used their AK to shoot up anything. But this lady felt the need to harass my poor brother-in-law at his place of work. She probably called other places too. WTF is her life that she has time to waste on silly shit like that?

Thought this was semi-relevant to this thread so posted it here.
 
Here's an article on MSN that claims NYT stated that the attacker in OSLO posted on 8chan 2 hours before the incident. How is that possible to post on 8chan 2 hours previous to the attack if it had been shut down on August 5th?

This article was published 20 hours ago, BTW.

The police said they were aware of online posts linked to the suspect, whose name has not been released. About two hours before the attack, a post appeared on 8chan, the message board that had hosted the anti-immigrant manifesto of the man accused of the El Paso shooting. The post raised questions of whether it could have been written by the suspect in the Norway attack.

I was about to reply that I know nothing about this but that perhaps the shooter posted on 8chan a week before, but yeah okay, that's suspicious for sure if they're reporting something that is impossible.

Although I agree it's a waste of time, I think people are just terrified. Since July 21st, there have been 25 mass shootings in the United States (more than 1 per day on average). I got this from gunviolencearchive.org. And it's gotten to where we barely bat an eye... I mean talk about desensitized, even I am just like, oh, again? How can you not be desensitized with that kind of frequency? People are getting terrified, and rightly so. Of course with 360 million people, it's statistically very rare it will affect you, you're still WAY more likely to die in a car accident, but the sense it creates is that any day you or loved ones could get stuck in a mass shooting. Although I think taking away guns won't work at this point simply due to how many there are and how easy it is to get them illegally, it still makes sense for people to want to do something about it, and one solution a person might consider is destroying the guns that are being used in these mass shootings. I can't blame the lady for calling about it, she's probably terrified and fed up.
 
Agreed Xorkoth, I'm just fact checking. Poor journalism has no excuses, if they don't check their references then they are leading us astray. I'm not claiming it was "on purpose" or it's a conspiracy. Journalists need to check facts and speak the truth so that we can frame a proper opinion on what's going on in this ever more complicated world.

I think the OSLO incident is horrible, BTW.
 
Yeah I forgot to say that but I was going to also add that the media is trying to be the first to report on everything and get attention-grabbing headlines, so they'll say just about anything without checking a lot of the time. So many inaccuracies in media reports these days. One thing the Trump era has done is revealed how much of a problem irresponsible reporting is in the media.

They discredit 8chan because that is where all the QANON post come from.

If they were so quick to point out "EVIL 8 CHAN SHOOTER" why was it only just a "another message board" when they printed a retraction? Should that make one question the links of 8 chan to previous shooters? Fool me once...

The vast majority of people at the classes were Hispanic; El Paso is a predominantly Latino city. Police say the accused gunman deliberately attacked Hispanics in the Walmart.

Michael McIntyre, general manager of Gun Central, one of the largest gun shops in El Paso and the host of the class, on Friday said his store tallied double the usual number of sales in the week following the attack, something that did not happen after previous mass shootings in Texas.

Most of the sales were for handguns, which can be strapped to an ankle or shoulder under clothing.

“I have over 50 for this Saturday class and approximately the same amount for the Sunday class, and I normally have approximately seven,” McIntyre said.

“We actually had two people buy guns here who were actually in the Walmart on the day of the shooting. The other people are just saying, ‘Hey, you know I want to be able to protect myself in the event of something going on.’,” he said.

My point was, if that was a raid on drug dealers, they are gonna be the ones who have guns regardless of legality.

Also, I admitadly have prejudices against police. It comes from a place of fear. I am working on seeing everyone in the light of being little pieces of what is, and all having the same inherent value.

As far as military or president... what?

About "ghost guns"

I know someone in the US Military who was doing a very thourough job of tracking down missing pieces of equipment. As in... too thourough for their own good. Got a "give us all your paperwork/research, and cease and desist right now"

Pretty sketchy.
