The empire wars are not winnable because the opponent melts into the scenery and then reappears again and again when the invader retreats, holding the ground doesn't work either because the fixed bases just get sniped at and RPG'd and the support vehicles hit with mines, IEDs and now ATGMs like TOW and even the local allied armies are suspect. French Foreign Legion learnt this the hard way in Indochine, The US repeated the error when they were in Vietnam and so the world keeps on spinning, nothing changes. Forever war is very profitable for a tiny section of the West.
Asymmetric warfare means people with flip flops and Kalashnikovs can grind down and defeat all modern armies over time provided they have some local support against the outsider. The outsider gets bogged down in costly engagements, dropping 500lb bombs on snipers or mortar positions slowly bankrupts the country dropping the bombs. Look at the mess the Saudis have gotten into in Yemen.
