Leftist Discussion Thread

because i'm feeling lazy; on the differences between private and personal property:

"things you personally own and use" are personal property, "things owned by an individual but used by others in exchange for something of value" are private property. its the latter that we on the left want to do away with

No offense intended, just poking a little fun at the PSL.

I consider myself to be left-wing, or at the very least highly influenced by certain strains of left-wing thought. Back when I was more actively engaged in the left in its current manifestations, it was always fun to bash organizations as being either tankie Brezhnevite stooges (PSL, WWP, etc) or the "left wing of the Democratic Party" (ISO, DSA, etc)

i don't even know what the PSL is really. there's way too many different groups and cliques on the left, but that's because diversity and decentralization are natural consequence of anti-authoritarianism, and anyway diversity of viewpoints is essential to a healthy, robust society. homogenisation causes stagnation, it weakens and endangers the whole system

You could look at it as a natural consequence of the left's stated goals of social leveling, public participation in the political process, etc. But there are other ways to look at it. For example, you could view the fragmentation of, say, basically the entire Trotskyist movement as the natural consequence of wanting to dominate a political space (even if the political space is a clique-ish, subcultural & largely insignificant one, which I would argue is definitely the case in the stated example) Political fragmentation/factionalism can also be observed in fascist groups, religious extremism & cults, and presumably it's not the result of egalitarianism or anti authoritarian principles in those cases

The PSL's mindset is typical of tankie discourse, but a little more polished. Basically in this model 1) the USA as imperialist top dog is the chief agent of reaction on the world stage, basically serving the same role as England did during French Revolution-era Europe, and therefore 2) anything that potentially serves the USA's political/economic interests must be bad, while anything that potentially harms those interests must be "good", or at the very least shouldn't be condemned without qualifications.

This could be seen with their commentaries on figures like Qaddafi, Mugabe, etc.

That's how I remember the PSL's politics, TBH I haven't read anything by them since the Arab Spring protests of 2011 so maybe they take a different line now

ugh, i hate these kind of one dimensional arguments that don't allow for nuance or consider consequences

the ends don't justify the means, and retiring imperialism and capitalism should cause as little harm as possible. i do not getting along at all with the revolution or nothing types; tyrannically forcing views and beliefs on others and killing everyone who resists is a setup for failure, a violent transition to invites a violent transition from

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

She's so going to lose upon re-election.
my VA is pretty top quality in everything. problems with the VA are from Republicans cutting and refusing proper funding, especially for necessary system and hardware updates. like the current GI bill issues, the VA told congress their systems couldn't handle it and they needed funds for updates and the GOP-led congress told them to fuck off

That's awesome, I'm glad yours is good. Not being a veteran, I don't really know much about it, but I do know I've heard of a lot of really major problems with at least some states/individual facilities which gave me the impression the VA was in serious trouble.
