Plastic bags to be banned in NY state.

This happened in parts of Australia recently. You can now buy 'reusable' plastic bags for about 15cents. These reusable bags are no great solution, they apparently contain more plastic and most consumers only reuse them a limited number of times, effectively reducing the benefit to these.

I definitely support a ban on single use bags but I think we need to invest in growing the capacity to recycle plastics in higher volumes too.

My girlfriend and I use the reusable cloth shopping bags. I never used to think of it myself, but my girl was raised by parents in a community that was pretty intense about environmental protections. I'm glad I do. Whenever I forget I bring the plastic grocery bags home and use them to wrap food up for the fridge, or to scoop cat litter into. So at least they get a second use. It's so dumb you can't recycle them, I used to always stick them in the recycling until I found out they don't recycle them and in fact they might have just thrown my recycling out because they were in there.

I still have some concerns about just how good for the environment these bans are. I'm generally supportive, I'd just like to see better evidence than I have so far.

Cautious agreement would be my stance on this. I want whatevers best for the environment and sustainability. Assuming banning plastic bags is what's best, and it seems reasonably likely that's the case, then I'm all for it.

Im just always cautious about making assumptions.

i use them as trash bags in my bathroom. I used them for dirty litter too before my cat died. I've got a ton of them saved, they're very useful for lots of things. My neighbors are pigs so I'm always picking up litter when I walk my dog.

Heh, i've been using them to scoop out my kitty litter as well for a long time and it's the reason I save them. I live in NYC so I guess I will be buying some reusable bags to use at some point. Don't really have a problem with that and used to a few years ago at a food store i used in Jersey.

But yeah they are perfect for the kitty litter. Guess I will have to just scoop it straight into the regular garbage can and then take it right out in the future. I have no problem with that and recycle my plastics, cans and cardboard. We gotta try and do something to save our planet.

Yeah I moved to having a small trash can with a kitchen-size bag in it and scoop directly into there and throw out the bag every trash day. It's actually easier. Plus those grocery bags often get holes randomly that you have no idea why they're there and then it spills litter everywhere.

Are you guys throwing the bag out with the kitty litter?

Yes, I just walk downstairs to thd front of the building and put it in one of the garbage cans. I have to do this everyday or the kitty litter stinks up the apartment. We have them share a litter box and it is one of my "chores". I've literally never seen my girlfriend doing this a single time and we have been together a pretty long time. I'm the one who cleans the whole house and does all the dishes, but that's okay.

But on the topic of these bags I have no idea what else to do with them really. Sometimes i store things in them like clothes/belongings if I have to go somewhere. Really curious about the day they just disappear from the city. It won't be that big a deal and people will adjust. They will still be using those clear bags on the roll to put your vegetables and fruit in I assume.

Yes, they are useful (I save them for picking up dog poo and as trash bags in the car). SM - do you have Publix in your area? Because Publix has recycling drops for plastic bags and foam trays and cartons.

I volunteered at a recycling center - plastic bags fuck up the sorting equipment.
