Jussie Smollett heartbroken over criticism after attack: 'You don't even want to see the truth'

Jussie Smollett spoke directly to his "doubters" in an exclusive interview that aired on "Good Morning America" Thursday, just over two weeks after the "Empire" star told police he was brutally attacked in what authorities are calling a suspected hate crime.

In his first interview since police say he was attacked last month, the singer and actor said he was heartbroken when he found out that people questioned the details of his story.

"I have to acknowledge the lies, and the hate. And it feels like if I had said it was a Muslim, or a Mexican, or someone black, I feel like the doubters would have supported me much more. A lot more," Smollett, 36, told ABC News' Robin Roberts. "And that says a lot about the place that we are in our country right now.

"It's not necessarily that you don't believe that this is the truth, you don't even want to see the truth," he added.

Smollett, who portrays a gay musician on Fox's "Empire," said the attack happened on Jan. 29, at around 2 a.m. as he was leaving a Subway restaurant in Chicago. He told police that two attackers gained his attention by yelling racial and homophobic slurs at him, according to an initial incident report.

He said the attackers put a noose around his neck, poured an unknown substance, likely bleach, on him and used their hands, feet and teeth as weapons in the assault, according to the report, which ABC News obtained last week via a Freedom of Information Act request. Smollett said the attackers also yelled, "This is MAGA country," during the attack -- a reference to President Donald Trump's "Make American Great Again" slogan.

The singer said he sustained injuries to his clavicle bone and bruised ribs during the attack, but some still questioned if he made the story up.

"For me, the main thing was the idea that I somehow switched up my story, you know? And that somehow maybe I added a little extra trinket, you know, of the MAGA thing," Smollett said. "I didn't need to add anything like that. They called me a f----, they called me a n----. There's no which way you cut it. I don't need some MAGA hat as the cherry on top of some racist sundae."

Smollett said earlier reporting by various media outlets claiming his attackers were wearing MAGA hats was inaccurate.

Others suggested that he may have lied in his explanation for being outside at 2 a.m. in sub-zero Chicago weather, but Smollett said "that's ridiculous."

"I've heard that it was a date gone bad, which I also resent that narrative," he said.

"I'm not gonna go out and get a tuna sandwich and a salad to meet somebody. That's ridiculous. And it's offensive," he added.

Smollett also confirmed reports that he was initially reluctant to contact the police or handover his cellphone to help with the investigation.

"They wanted me to give my phone to the tech for three to four hours. I'm sorry but -- I'm not gonna do that," the singer said. "Because I have private pictures and videos and numbers: my partner's number, my family's number, my castmate's number, my friends' numbers, my private emails, my private songs, my private voice memos."

"I don't know what that's gonna be, to hand over my phone for -- and honestly, by then, inaccurate, false statements had already been put out there," he added.

He also revealed that he didn't want to call the police at first, but his friend and creative director, Frank Gatson, did so on his behalf. When police arrived, responding officers said they found Smollett in his apartment with stained clothing and a "white rope draped around" his neck, according to the report.

Smollett said he was still in a state of shock.

"I was looking at myself, just like checking myself out. I saw the bruise on my neck, you know, like the little -- the rope burn around my neck," he said. "So when the police came I kept the clothes on, I kept the rope on me. ... I mean, it wasn't, like, wrapped around. But, yeah, it was around because I wanted them to see."

The musician said he's hopeful that police will track down the suspects. He also believes the two potential persons of interest in a photo released by police in the days after the attack are the perpetrators.

"I don't have any doubt in my mind that that's them," Smollett said. "Never did."

But there's no doubt in his mind that the attack was racially motivated.

"I could only go off of their words. I mean, who says, "f----- 'Empire' n-----," "This is MAGA country, n-----," ties a noose around your neck, and pours bleach on you? And this is just a friendly fight?" he asked. "It's unbelievable to me that anything of this has come to this. That every single thing that I have done, every single thing that I have cooperated with, somehow has gotten twisted into being some bull that it's not."

Smollett decided to speak out so people could hear the "truth."

"I think people need to hear the truth," he said. "'Cause everybody has their own idea. Some are healing and some are hurtful, but I just want young people, young members of the LGBTQ community -- young, black children -- to know how strong that they are."

Do you think racism is more out in the open now or is it actually worse?

Fucking disgusting. What is fucking wrong with some people.

And fucking trump sure does nothing to dissuade these types either. I'm not saying this is trumps fault, but he sure doesn't do enough to prevent it. Or you know, just NOT do the shit that promotes it.

This division is a cancer upon American society.

Is racism worse or more open now? All in all I don't think it's worse. I think there's overall much less racism now in American than the once was.

We are still in a much less racist much more tolerant society than we once were, but yes, there have been recent set backs.

It’s gotten only better not worse over time. It just came out of the closet, loud and proud, like the right to be gay. Or the right to die. Or the right to racism.

If you at all become queasy at the notion of civil rights please never forget where we came from.

He's a POS. What is with these losers like Jussie Smollett who fake hate crimes for attention? Then when real ones happen no one believes it.

Add Jussie to this map: https://www.fakehatemap.com

It was extremely obvious this was a hoax from the start.

BREAKING: Multiple soucres tell @ABC7Chicago Eyewitness News Jussie Smollet and the 2 men who are being questioned by police staged the attack - allegedly because his character was being written out of the show Empire.

Too much attention to this clear mentally sick individual Jussie. Fire him like they did Rosanne and Paula Dean.

Smollett will claim exhaustion and check himself into a hospital, since he's one of the biggest drama queens ever.

Robin Roberts is a pc Moron.

That sort of smells like b.s.

Unfortunately I think you may be right.

Could you guys please provide what you feel is the best evidence that this attack was a hoax?

I read the news report, but it doesn't really say anything one way or the other.

umm.....this guy lied.

How irresponsible is it to fan the flames of racial division...

There was zero video evidence.

He said his manager was on the phone and heard it. Refused to hand over his phone records.

It's actually pretty easy to tell that he's completely full of shit.

Accusing a victim of faking their assault is fucking disgusting.

So I sure as fuck hope you guys have some actual evidence to base it in. I've Googled it and I can't find any.

There are reports of the police investigating the possibility. Which itself proves nothing. And subsequent to that there are additional reports of the police refuting that they've claimed they were investigating that possibility.

All in all, I'm not seeing anything real to base such sickening suggestions on.

And honestly I don't follow the logic here. I don't see how such an attack would prevent him getting written off the show.

Accusing a victim of faking their assault is fucking disgusting.

FAKING A HATE CRIME IS FUCKING DIGUSTING!!!!

If you've followed this for more than 10 mins you would know by now that it's a hoax.

That's it? Is that all you've got? There isn't video evidence therefore he's automatically lying? Wtf kinda logic is that?

It's a deplorable suggesting to make that a victim of an assault is making it up. It does sometimes happen, but I'd want pretty fucking solid evidence before making such claims.

I'm glad you agree, now I've attempted to find evidence that it's a hoax and was unsuccessful. So I ask again. What is the best evidence of this assertion? I'd hope that there's more to go on that what's been put forth.

Stop saying he's a victim of assault.

He's an accuser that has zero evidence and massive holes in his story.

How backwards is it that you're looking for evidence that it's a hoax, as opposed to evidence that it actually happened.

Some people really WANT there to be a problem with white racist MAGA kids assaulting minorities. Read Mark Dice's book for a small peek into just how many FAKE hate crimes are concocted by sad, desperate people.

@RobElgasABC7

"BREAKING: Multiple sources tell ABC7Chicago Eyewitness News Jussie Smollet and the 2 men who are being questioned by police staged the attack - allegedly because his character was being written out of the show Empire."

If that's true it's fucking disgusting.
So the question really is: if he faked it, should he be jailed?
(I'd like to hear cduggles and jess' opinions plz)

If it's true, then yes, it is disgusting. I don't think he should go to jail for it, but charging him and making him repay the money it cost to investigate it plus an added punitive fine seems completely deserved.

But I'm still far from convinced it was faked. Any news outlet can say anything and attribute it to unknown sources. That says nothing.

The police have said that their position is not that they think it's a hoax. So with no real evidence, I think it's pretty disgusting to cast doubt upon him.

I will support his claim until there's real evidence it isn't true. Real evidence as in the conclusion of the police investigation. Not unknown news sources contradicted publically by the police.

Again I don't even see how this hoax would prevent him getting written off. It doesn't make sense to me.

So I'll support him until there's solid evidence he made it up. Because the danger of calling him a liar if he's telling the truth is not something I'm prepared to accept.

But, if he did make it all up, then he deserves nothing but contempt.

It's not like this is a knee-jerk reaction from me calling him a liar. I've been following this for a while and it's glaringly obvious by now that he's not being honest.
The whole accusation is kind of ridiculous. He managed to keep a hold of his Subway sandwich throughout and after the assault.

"BREAKING: Police raided the home of two persons of interest in Jussie Smollett case last night. Both men are of Nigerian descent and have appeared as extras on the show. Police took bleach, shoes, electronics and more. Officers asked family if they knew Jussie Smollett" @CBSchicago

What's the point though?

Like, let's say for a moment that you're right, that he made it up.

What for? What's the point? I just don't buy that it would prevent him being written out of a TV show.

Jussie Smollett’s neighbors cast doubt on his attack story

By Gabrielle Fonrouge

February 11, 2019 | 5:02am | Updated

CHICAGO — Nearly two weeks after “Empire” star Jussie Smollett claimed he was the victim of a racist, homophobic attack, cops have yet to identify any suspects — and some people in his tony Chicago neighborhood are growing skeptical.

“I don’t believe it happened the way he said it did,” said Agin Muhammad, who lives in the same swank high-rise near the Navy Pier as Smollett.

“I’ve been in this neighborhood five years. I don’t believe it, not around here … Half the people are gay and the other half are black.”

A patron at Lizzie McNeill’s Irish Pub, about a block from the scene of the alleged Jan. 29 incident, said Smollett’s story “doesn’t really make sense.”

“It’s a lie, because Chicago is the most liberal city around,” said the man, who wouldn’t give his name. “They have cameras everywhere … Why can’t they find the attack?”

Cops have said they found plenty of surveillance video, but none that captured the incident.

Meanwhile, Chicago police said Sunday that Smollett has yet to turn over data from his cellphone to verify that he was on the phone with his music manager, Brandon Moore, when he was allegedly attacked.

Moore has said he heard Smollett’s assailants shout a “racial slur” and the words “MAGA country,” an apparent reference to President Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.

“We have no reason to doubt the statements, but for a criminal investigation, we need to independently confirm the phone records,” Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

“We offered to take the phone to download the data and he expressed he couldn’t be without his phone for several hours.”

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson has said that Smollett, 36, was being treated as a crime victim, but would be held accountable if cops learn he filed a false report.

Smollett told cops he was confronted by two men, one wearing a black mask, who hurled gay and racist epithets at him, calling him “’Empire’ f—-t n—-r” while he was walking home shortly before 2 a.m.

The assailants allegedly punched Smollett in the face, doused him with a liquid — believed to be bleach — and tied a rope around his neck in an underpass between the Sheraton and Loews Chicago hotels.

Last week, The Post traced Smollett’s likely route to the underpass from a 24-hour Subway sandwich shop where he bought a tuna sandwich and a salad.

Near the foot of a stairwell to the Loews, The Post found an empty hot sauce bottle that was partially filled with a clear liquid that smelled like bleach.

The Post alerted police, who seized the bottle. Guglielmi said it was turned over to the FBI for analysis.

The FBI declined to comment.

What's the point though?

Like, let's say for a moment that you're right, that he made it up.

What for? What's the point? I just don't buy that it would prevent him being written out of a TV show.

Pathological narcissism and attention-seeking.
I had never heard of the guy before this - now he's world (in)famous.

Plus he would receive a ton of praise and admiration from the Left for proving that there's a problem with "dangerous, white supremacist, right-wing extremists assaulting minorities" plus all the sympathy that goes along with it.

Just look at the history of fake racially-based hate crimes over the past couple of years - although it's hard to find them as it's not something that the media is proud about reporting on. Generally the original accusation of a hate crime will get a lot of air and then the correction will be relegated to page 20 in small print.

article above said:
“We offered to take the phone to download the data and he expressed he couldn’t be without his phone for several hours.”
yeah right.... not the actions of someone who was legitimately attacked and wishes to find the perpetrators.

Chicago is hardly MAGA country... in fact it's one of the most progressive of the fly-over cities going as far back as the 1960's.

And the "attack" occurred in one of the most predominant gay areas in the city. It's very, very unlikely.

Just say'n ;)
