Sorry, missed these earlier, but am happy to respond. I think Trump has two skills he uses frequently. First, the ability distract and keep focus off what he's really trying to do. He can play up subjects for attention, even heated arguments, as a means to keep people from focusing on the quieter, closed door actions he's attempting. Secondly, and the two are symbiotic, his mouth (and twitter) moves quickly and loudly without brain engagement to slow it down or rationalize wtf is being spewed forth. The real takeaway here is that if Trump is tweeting or speaking on something, I have little faith it is relevant to what's happening or that his words carry meaning beyond distraction.
This goes back to the time before he chose to run for office. He'd achieved tremendous success in the business world as an asshole. Either he is the luckiest asshole around, or he uses his asshole skills to deploy shrewd decisions. Early on, I kept telling myself he was that distracting genius, mostly because I couldn't believe an idiot could be so lucky. Two years into his first term, I'm still not sure of what he is, only that I know not to listen to the noise.
trump decided not to honor american soldiers in france.
trump decided not to honor american soldiers at arlington (which, uncharacteristically, he admitted was a mistake).
trump claims he did visit arlington on veterans day last year. he did not.
remind me who's disrespecting the military?
I'm looking at an idiot at work (Trump, not ali) and fumbling his way through social decisions. Nothing has really changed, IMO - still a distraction wielding asshole. However, I suspect he is starting to recognize (at least at the tiniest level, perhaps at the behest of his cadre of advisors) that there are certain things a President should do. That's the only way I can see him conceding that he'd made a mistake. It doesn't mean he'll do better. I think he's incapable, honestly.
the caravan is still moving but the deployed troops are withdrawing.
was that anything more than a massively wasteful- $200 million - political stunt?
Two parts to this one. First, he made noise about it during the election, to save face he has to at least make an effort towards his promises. This shows him trying to effect a wall (fulfill promise) while not turning dictator and running over Congress (though, surprisingly also NOT using it as a moment to decry the lack of support for the wall). It's an opportunity/situation he cannot ignore and his hand is somewhat forced to 'do something' based on what he promised. Secondly, distraction. He's not made a lot of tweets and speeches about it, the media has done that for him. But I'm watching to see what else comes out that wasn't in the spotlight - what's he working on now that is still on the down low?
