The 2018 Trump Presidency thread

MEDIA

Everything is fake. The news is fake. Politicians are fake. Most information is wrong. Everybody is lying all the time. Even if Trump is a liar, at least he's pointing out that everybody is lying and the whole fucking system is corrupt. The hypocrisy of Trump being part of that broken system is less significant, to me, than exposing it. You can't fix something until you admit that it's broken. A lot of people think the United States is broken. A lot of people are disillusioned with the social climate.

Breitbart is deliberately fake news (I've looked at their site, it's glaringly obvious). So how is this telling? Telling that I can tell when news is fake?

So all news must be fake then I guess.

Vice is owned partly by Disney now, so that says it all...

I agree that much of the news we see has an agenda and is financed by someone with an agenda.

...

NPR is one of the only news sources I've found in years that accurately reports on drugs. Fox, CNN, Breitbart, they all fuckin' lie about drugs. That's how I know I can trust NPR.

I don't believe there is any true independent, honest to God news sources out there anymore. All of them have an allegiance, an agenda, a slant on what they are willing to present and how.

I even used to respect NPR, until I realized who funds them (gov't grants primarily) and therefore where their interests lie to ensure funding :\

I think the best we can do is gather info from various (opposing) sources and try to discern for ourselves what is real, while keeping in mind no source if free of filtering.

That Trump keeps pointing and saying "Fake News" only puts it in focus. Whether the MSM media gave Obama a pass, or supported him, or was just as tight in scrutinizing him, or Bush - it doesn't matter to me at this point. Today, I have to take every sound bite and NOT accept it at face value, regardless of where I'm hearing it from. I encourage everyone to not rely on a single source, but if you have the time try and hear a subject from multiple (preferably opposing) sources to try and gain a fuller picture upon which to make your opinion.

UNITING

do you think trump is a uniter? can you give me a couple of examples of things trump has done to unite the country?

we're not talking about other presidents - we're talking about trump. the 'whataboutism' deflection gets a little tiresome.

my point is that trump explicitly ran on being a uniter. so what's he doing to unite the country?

i think leaders should start by being an example. his example of one of an uncouth bully, imo. and people follow that lead.

Unite the country? Really? This man is trying devide us. Trying to start a race war. Unfortunately it's working.

Trump just met with 400 young black leaders from around the country. There were growing racial tensions during Obama's term which many today are blaming Trump for. The MSM are the real dividers.

One example? How about meeting with 400 young black leaders (ftr, I was unaware of this). How many times did Obama meet with a few hundred white leaders, or meet with law enforcement to bridge the race gap as opposed to throwing remarks to the media that incited more violence against police? And no..lmao...I'm not going to count having Kanye in the Oval Office as bridging the race gap and uniting peoples. Yeah, only one instance, but by the same standard as any lie makes him a liar, any effort to unite can be used to label him a uniter.

We had mention earlier about the recorded comments from decades ago about "You wouldn't want them living next to you either" (may be off on exact words), but I put that up there with "Grab em by the pu__y". In both situations, it was a comment made where he didn't expect it to be recorded and held against him later - guy talk, locker room talk, etc. To say it is 'un-Presidential' one should recall he wasn't Presidential at the time, he was a successful (?) businessman talking among friends.

Personally, during his Presidential term, I don't see him doing much to unite the American people. I believe those saying he is dividing us and inciting violence are riding the momentum of their hate for Trump, and focusing the lack of unifying efforts as his fault when they've been at play for quite awhile. He's not helping it, but I don't see him (intentionally) making it worse. I see him doing what a business man would do - try to solve problems. Specifically, problems he sees as higher priority (addressing trade imbalances that hurt US, stopping the endless saber rattling from DPKR, etc). His priorities may not match that of some Americans, they may feel other issues require his time more, such as race gaps. But he isn't in a job where his goals and priorities are handed to him. He is in a position to have advisers help him, but he ultimately decides what is the priority for his attention. This approach will inevitably leave areas unaddressed, and therefore room for criticism.

This isn't a white v African American thing, but that is the most obvious example to seize upon. The black-white gap, like that with illegal immigrants, and other divided aspects of our culture, have existed well before he ran for office. Is he making these divides worse? In some aspects, yes. Is he making them better? Hard to find areas where he is. Is he focusing elsewhere and letting these fester? Yes, and the little attention he gives to these (like the wall, one of his main running points) seems to have little traction and a lot of detractors.

I don't think he is addressing the 'unity' concept successfully, but I also don't see this as an area where he has a lot of skill or experience. I'm expecting he is focusing elsewhere as it better suits his ability to get things done.

trump on the saudi deals"

"It’s $110 billion. I believe it’s the largest order ever made. It’s 450,000 jobs. It’s the best equipment in the world." (oct. 13)

"$110 billion in purchasing. It’s 500,000 jobs, American jobs. Everything’s made here." (oct. 16)

"It’s 500,000 jobs. It’ll be ultimately $110 billion. It’s the biggest order in the history of our country from an outside military." (oct. 17)

"...$110 billion worth of work, which means 600,000 jobs." (oct. 19)

"So now if you’re talking about — that was $110 billion — you know, you’re talking about over a million jobs." (oct. 19)

my emphasis. so in 6 days it went from 450k jobs to 1m jobs. which is it?

thanks goodness he's such a straight-shooter - you always k now exactly where you stand :)

LIES

I found lots of web pages some had 5 pages or more of trumps constant lying. But I'm not gonna waste my time or anybody else's by posting links or copying and pasting. Fuck that I have a life. Plus his lies are right there for you and everybody to Google...

J - A basic search can provide multiple sites that are tracking "Trump lies". Well over 500+ at this point, according to some; averaging over 2/day, I think? Also, once you step back to qualifying 'serious' lies vs noise, you've already admitted he lies.

I remember when he said he would never golf he would be too busy being the president. He's out there golfing every week pretty much.

I think a lot of us would put this in the 'joking' or at least 'not serious lie'. But technically does fall into the lie category. I do recall Bush catching flack for his vacations to Texas, and Obama getting flack for golf and whatnot for his vacations. No matter what, there are folks that carry this expectation that any sitting President's time is too valuable to spend 'relaxing' (and perhaps there is informal hob-nobbing or political discussions done out of the office). I'm not going to get too bent out of shape for any President needing to 'relax'. That said, another simple google search proves Dawg's statement pretty accurate about 'every week pretty much'.

= = =

That said, EVERY political candidate promises things in order to be elected. Few of them are able to actually achieve what they state as their goals. Especially for a President who can't get things through Congress. Couple the natural resistance any President without a House and Senate majority to back him will face, with a guy who likes to talk a lot more than he thinks, and you will have a 500+ list of things he says which are either not true, or not achievable. I don't see him lying simply to lie. I can see him making statements of what he'd like to achieve, perhaps as fuel to get people behind him to support him and make things happen, but more often creating a false hope that cannot be achieved.

Campaign promises are BIG and the people are used to politicians not following through on them and saying whatever to get elected, however Trump is doing an excellent job so far fulfilling his promises. The ones that haven't come to fruition yet need the approval of an incredibly "resistant' Congress, who want Trump not to succeed at the expense of what's best for the people.

Alasdairm - what was the final amount? Is that genuinely a serious and damaging lie? Is that the most egregious example you could find?

i would be inclined to agree with you, tlb, if not for the fact that trump spent an entire campaign berating obama for taking time off and, once elected, he took presidential time off and vacation spending to egregious new limits. pure hypocrisy.

That said, EVERY political candidate promises things in order to be elected.
that doesn't make it ok. he ran on being an outsider. he was going to be different. he was going to drain the washington swamp. he was going to get stuff done because only he knew how. people voted for it because they believed they were voting for change. yes, he's as bad as all the rest. and that makes it worse.

i have no idea. take your pick? :(
Well the fact is a final number. I'm not excusing him if he lied, but one explanation could be that the deal wasn't finalized and the numbers did actually change during the negotiation process. A flub of numbers here is not going to lose him any support. My issue is with them selling arms to the Saudis in the first place.

is it a serious lie? yes. is it the most egregious example i could find? no - it just came to mind because it's recent.
You know a lot about Trump's lies. I'd like to know the worst, most serious, potentially criminal lie that he's made. Because currently the past 2 presidents are beating him in the serious lie game.

Things are changing yet not at the speed that many wish for. Have you not noticed the entire FBI management have been fired or are under investigation? Pretty big deal along with the abuse of power surveillance that his win (and their failure to remove him) exposed. Not sure if we've ever seen such bipartisan (swamp) resistance against a President. McCain basically flipped to a Dem. Like him or not, Trump's win has brought many eyes to politics and it has exposed a substantial amount of government corruption.

I've never seen a line that long for early voting. I had a shorter wait during the 2016 election.

People are fired up this year.

Also I'm all for bridging the gap but some Republican voter parked their Lexus so close to my car I had to climb in the other side. I shouted "who the fuck would park like that?!" and two middle aged men kept silent and walked even faster away from me.

I keyed the Lexus. Fucker wants to park bad? Well here's 100 bucks in paint damage you dick.

Trump is trying to discredit the FBI so that any evidence brought against him looks less solid less credible or "fake" as you maga deplorables say.

Jgrimez... I just looked back at a lot of these pages on this thread and there you were. Every single time someone pointed out 1 or 20 of trumps thousands of lies you'd say the same fucking shit "show me an illegal lie." "Show me a big lie." Or my personal favorite "obviously he was kidding."..... kidding huh??? About pretty much everything he says... wow. The fact that your cool with a president who constantly lies about every little thing and it does not concern you is scary. You will back Trump even when he is dead wrong. So I highly doubt that you would be "the first one to call him out if he's wrong" like I have heard you say so many times in this thread. I realised rather quickly but not quick enough that talking to you is like talking to a brick wall. Please don't get an erection because I mentioned the word "wall." Your maga brain heard build that wall and hate brown people. I'm sorry I didn't mean to give you blue balls. Ok, back to you... You don't listen to facts

<SNIP>- please don't use insults, mate- swilow

Take care and enjoy your life.

They get it from us, buy iron ore from us, make your own steel, dont be so lazy- then sell back to us.

China is important to us as they appear important and have money, China good.

Ahhhh man, I really don't do well with these online websites. I'm from the streets so it's really hard for me to not act a fool when people talk shit over the internet. Where I'm from we just don't do that. It would be considered pussy. Anyway everyone enjoy your day.

Get out and vote!

Hey, you're doing just fine :)

And yes, fucking vote!

If Beto wins, I'm literally gonna cry (happy tears). It will be a new era for Texas.

I don't have have high hopes, but you never know.

When I was in line a Cruz supporter tried to hand my wife and I, and the guy behind us a pamphlet, "Something to read while you wait."

I just waved him away but the guy behind us said, "I don't wana read THAT." It cracked me up, I guffawed and smiled a shit eating grin.

how would you feel if, in response to your criticism about how bluelight is run, the staff just told you to fuck off?

I don't care what you think. Ban me if you like. You guys run the show, right? You can do whatever you want. Tell me to fuck off all you like. They are words on the internet. I really don't give a flying shit. CH is blatantly abusing his position as a moderator. He is the most consistently insulting person in CEP... People criticise me for being insulting but they just turn the other way when people are way more insulting towards me. With all due respect, I care what you think about as much as I imagine you care what I think.

Tell me to fuck off. Ban me. Do whatever you like. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. If anything, it just confirms the fact that the left is afraid to have their beliefs challenged. When a real discussion comes along, they say "troll" and "racist" and they ignore any inconvenient facts. If you want to contribute to this, that's up to you. I seriously don't care. I'm not the sort of person that's just going to sit around and take shit from authority figures, which is ironic considering how y'all are going on about Trump being authoritarian. This website doesn't promote diversity of opinions or free speech.
