It's always a good idea to check out whose tweets you are posting. (Admittedly, @PeterSweden's failed stunt to disrupt refugee rescue missions ending with him being rescued by a refugee rescue ship was a gem. :D)

Some of his professed beliefs:

• The moon landing was a hoax perpetrated by the freemasons
• LGBTQ should be people be sent to camps
• Evolution didn't happen
• Feminism is against God's order
• Jews are a seperate [sic] race from Europeans
• The Holocaust never happened (he took that back, probably when he became an Islamophobe)
• Homosexuals should receive capital punishment

He's disingenuous at best, or a pathetic incel who will is provocative for any attention. What is with these guys? 8(


In response to your offer to issue a correction if I point out all the evidence that disproves his tweet, no thanks.


Don't mistake me, it's all kinds of wrong, and I would easily grind it to fine powder with my stiletto. Unfortunately, I've spent enough time with attention-seeking bigoted, homophobic, racist, anti-Semitic turned Islamophobe conspiracy theorists for this lifetime.


So, as tempting as schooling you in the sociology of immigration sounds, I have to pass due to the brevity and uncertainty of life.

Thanks. I have no desire to be impolite. If I ever come across that way it is a result of real or perceived injustice/bias. But I'm working on it.

Yeah fair enough, but even if I disagree ideologically with someone I can still quote their reporting if it's factual.
I showed that tweet to my friend in Denmark and he didn't say it was false. He disagreed with the burqa ban but agreed with the other things.
I personally don't see any problem with teaching immigrants the values of their newly adopted country.

While we shouldn't condone bigotry, we shouldn't also ignore the issues some countries are facing with their immigration policies.
If we ignore them or let them fester that's how we end up with race wars, ethnic cleansing, genocides etc.

You're saying that we're going to end up with ethnic cleansing if we let immigrants in without subjecting them to some kind of government cultural indoctrination programs?

I think it is really quite dehumanizing to about talk about people that way. I'm not sure what "teaching immigrants the values of their newly adopted country" would consist of, but i'm sort of reluctant to ask.
I think the general theme here is one of hostility to foreigners and talking up fascistic efforts to culturally de-program people.
That sort if thing would never work, and would only create massive amounts of suffering, drama and grief to people who don't really pose a threat to anybody - all this fascistic peter sweden nonsense ever really achieves is to cause division and tension.
He doesn't have any real solutions - he's just a guy who has made a career out of hate clickbait, and pushing his political bigotry on social media.

I don't think there is any merit to the idea of teaching culture to migrants, because i don't think the kind of "culture" you are talking about can be taught in an simple way.
It sounds like a euphemistic way of referring to internment camps or something - which, frankly, wouldn't surprise me

Seems to me our "shared values" aren't particularly shared at all. That these arguments exist at all is evidence of that.

Personally, I think unchecked excessive immigration can be harmful to society. But it has to be REALLY excessive. And I don't think the numbers are even close to high enough to be a serious concern. I think this is all just the same controversies that have gone on for decades with various groups.

Provided the numbers don't get crazy high, new immigrant groups just wind up largely consumed and merged into the dominant culture. The dominant culture then ceases to see a problem as it is increasing exposed to the children of the immigrant culture who've been brought up in the dominant culture, and the dominant culture moves on to the next scary lot of immigrants that are gonna destroy us all.

^ agreed 100% about the "shared values". To me, the "values" held by a nation are pretty abstract, and pretty fluid.
The idea that there is some way of teaching "values" seems a bit fanciful to me - or is it just a cynical way of making immigration more complicated and difficult, for the sake of an ideological objection to migrants entering a country?

As reluctant as some people are to acknowledge it, immigration is a pretty essential thing for the economies of a lot of developed countries, due to our low birth rates and aging population.
Without migrants, we would have a massive demographic inbalance, where a huge proportion of the population is past retirement age, putting pressure on the younger generations to maintain economic stability.

I understand that people want their country's culture to stay the same, but that's really not possible. All culture is fluid, especially in the modern age where communications and modes of travel allow for cultural cross-polination. It's unavoidable, so i think we need to be realistic in understanding that the best way to get the most from new migrants is through muyual respect and understanding.
In time, we will all adapt.

it's especially true of the u.s. given the country's history i.e .the majority of the population are descended from immigrants.

I was referring to the issues, the cultural conflicts. You are ignoring them, and saying we should just let everyone in and hope for the best.
I know someone who works security in Sweden. There are problems. One way to alleviate these problems is through education. It's easier to respect a culture once you truly understand the rules and what's expected of you if you're a visitor.

Let's say hypothetically that you wanted to permanently relocate to a middle eastern country and one of the requirements was to complete a course to learn about the culture.
Would you have a problem with that? Wouldn't you prefer to understand the local rules and customs so that you don't cause offence or accidentally get yourself into trouble?
Maybe something that was acceptable or normalized in your country is illegal there..

Should we afford the same respect to Scandinavian culture?
Scandinavians have created some of the most prosperous, educated and progressive societies especially with regards to gender equality.
Would it be good to share these values?
