The 2018 Trump Presidency thread

People are unable to anticipate their health care needs.
People who get hit with disastrous and unexpected problems, like getting t-boned by an impaired driver are going to rack up expensive ER care. Those costs will be written off and ERs will close. It's happened before it will happen again.

Well, i've always eaten really healthy and haven't had an alcoholic drink for years - and live a pretty decent lifestyle, healthwise.
But i also use drugs.

The problem with condemning people who eat garbage is that shit food is cheaper, easier and tends to be more readily available.
And condemning people that take drugs ignores the fact that some of us are able to do so and maintain good health.
I don't think morality arguments (concerning food or drugs) have much place in debates like this, personally.
It fails to acknowledge the various causes people use substances - or consume unhealthy food.

Eating healthy requires a certain economic stablility - so it seems like punishing people who eat poorly is kinda punishing the poor.
Which is not to say some rich people don't eat poorly (see: trump) - but they do have a choice.
People working 60 hour weeks just to scrape by probably don't have as much choice sometimes.

Either way, i'm grateful to live in a country with universal healthcare (in other words, a developed western nation that isn't the USA).
It's not perfect, but it's served me well when i've needed it, usually with no out-of-pocket expense - even when i was seeking help for something drug related.
Really value judgements about drugs and healthy lifestyles are very subjective and i don't think they really belong in health policy.

^IME, not overly. There is the judgemental and conservative streak present which leads the lay person to deride drug users but I've always had compassion and excellent care when I've sought treatment. Even when I've been strung out/psychotic from drug abuse, I've never felt stigmatised.

Though I have found that admitting to suicidal thoughts casts something of shadow across one.

Is there stigma for drug users seeking care in Australia? (Yes I know this is general).

Yes. Theres been test areas that dole bludgers get a food stamp deal rather than dole because the town was rife with drugs. That linda worked but the drugs are a good excuse for centrelonk to not dish out the dole.

Theres drug testing for the dole being rolled out so its a sign druggies are all dole bludgers but the reality is most have jobs.

So the stereotype of a druggie here of a homeless dole bludging waste of space is there but inaccurate.

Stigmas arent a problem if you dont care what strangers think really. Besides if you dont look like one you can get away with a lot thanks to stereotypes.

That legislation didn't pass parliament, fortunately - so they're not going to be drug testing people claiming benefits.

House Republicans plan vote to avert shutdown but Senate may not go along

sounds like we need president trump's unparalleled negotiation skills! he can fix this. he's the world's best deal maker! i look forward to great success!

alasdair

The president is scheduled to leave for Mar-a-Lago tomorrow. Whether we know what's "in his heart" or not ( 8( ), the optics of starting another weekend of golf at his private resort while the government shuts down (and many federal employees are about to be furloughed) are terrible.

the only optic he needs to maintain support from 50percent of the US is bashing black ppl, mexicans, and occaisionally muslims.

he knows this so golfing and telling blantant lies mean nothing to anyone except the ppl that already hate him.

Wow. What a disgrace.
I wonder what history will make of this creep?

i'm guessing a second term when the dems fuck up again and trump plays on peoples racism to gain victory once again. I think lots of people underestimate the power of racism and how common it is in the populace.

trump is invincible as long as he continues to play to race card.

they are working weekends as he says! end of argument see?

I've never seen someone lie with such impunity. man that race card is powerful

the GOP has well understood the power of playing to racism ever since nixon's "southern strategy". what they didnt know is that lee atwater's explanation of it would turn out to not hold true today, after our first black president's 2 terms.

If you drink or heroin or any other substance that can cause serious health issues then yes, it should be included into the cost of your health Care.

They should make sure that the risk of overdosing and racking up massive bills are reduced by providing free perfect quality heroin .

Thankfully it's closer, at least on paper, to 35-40%. And it will hopefully turn out to be miscalculation. Though I disagree with a lot of conservative view points, especially when it veers into faith-based (but not based in good faith) politics, I don't think the majority of decent people on either 'side' can stomach this for too much longer.
