2017 Trump Presidency Thread

Not open for further replies.
I didn't watch, but I guess Trump is giving up on nation building and has decided that shooting terrorists is the better solution.

The nation-building fluff was all bullshit.

Much like his promises about "jobs" and rebuilding the US manufacturing industry.
This administration has done nothing but gut the government and destroy funding to things like healthcare, diplomacy, scientific research.
I'd say the same thing about trump's apparent 'libertarian' leanings.

I see him as a cheap con-man peddling populism to the masses, then shamelessly failing to honour any of his promises.

Trump is the most impotent president the USA im history.
He's battling against the modern world - against protection of the environment, against social welfare policies - and against any kind of intellectual authority.

It's sad to see how much resentment trump has for people trying to make the world a better place.

His insecurity, resentment and ignorance is putting millions of human lives at risk - in america and around the world.

His spin-doctors and supporters are having an increasingly hard time trying to cover up and explain away the trump administration's deep dysfunction - seeing steve bannon get booted was pretty hilarious.

"The art of the deal"?
Trump's shit outta luck, and the rest of his term is going to be miserable for him - if he even makes it through the next 3 years.
Good - he's a spiteful, bitter and incredibly self-absorbed charlatan.
Healthy democracies don't let people like him achieve such powerful positions of leadership.

Trump seems to promote this idea of his family being the next american political dynasty, but his name has become a global laughing stock.
He should have stuck to being a pimp like his father.

Do you think anything could have changed more recently that could make trump change his mind?

Did you know that because Isis have been getting battered in Syria and Iraq over the last year that they are heading for Afghanistan again? Which they weren't doing in 2013.

ISIS have been active in afghanistan for at least a couple of years.

When you say "heading for afghanistan again" - are you sure you're not confusing ISIS for al qaeda?

I'm pretty sure most of trump's war talk is a sign of desperation.
His team has crumbled under his "leadership", he's alienating a lot of very powerful people - and is incredibly unpopular.
A lot of white house leaks have indicated that his advisers need to 'protect' him from criticism or negative press that will trigger his tantrums and angry tweets, but surely the old bastard must be at least somewhat aware of how much most of america hates him.

He's going to send people off to fight unwinnable wars to attempt to salvage some kind of popularity.
Not really the sort of noble act political figures are remembered fondly for.
I suspect he knows he's fucking doomed, but is trying to distract and rally the american people behind another pointless war.
Pretty low for a draft-dodger with a record like his.
He's always been in it for himself.

He is devoid of credibility, and seemingly has no agenda beyond normalising his reactionary politics of envy.
It's a cautionary tale in who not to vote for - incompetent, inexperienced hateful brats have no place in a job like his.
I hope his presidential cos-play act is over sooner rather than later.

Thank you Erikmen for trying!

illegal immigration is down by 90% or something ridiculous.

I am going to try to chime in here again:

Liquid I am hoping you can clarify for me where you might have heard the number above? In my research I can find numbers equivalent to about half of what you state, so I am wondering where I can find the information you are seeing.

Having spent all of my life as a darker shade than 75% of the people surrounding me, I happen to know what counts as racism to me. Often it is as simple as being called by an undesirable/insulting/derogatory/branding title. Examples of these can be found just about anywhere, and I know for a fact that many in the Latino community take offense at the term Mexican alone. There is many reasons for this, highest on that list is that not all 'brown' people are from Mexico.

Employment Facts?

Trump claims 1,000,000 in new jobs in the private sector.

Liquid, I figured out where you are getting the facts that you keep spouting: Trump himself! Alternative facts are not, by the very definition of alternative, really what is going on. (Maybe this being a more negative comment will get your attention enough to respond to my questions?)

While I have never tried to say that Donald Trump is not the president of the United States, I can say that he is NOT the president that I would (did) choose. If I were an illegal immigrant, I would no longer choose the US as the place I would go. Can you imagine volunteering to be represented by this 'Merican?

Yes, that is a bigoted remark, while not aimed at a particular race as 'Mericans can be any color, creed, or I suppose, even nationality. It is directed at those that base all their opinions on any one of, or combination of the following things: hate, fear, alternative facts, or FOX news.

Would it be safer or more truthful to just say that Donald Trump is a bigot? After all his horrible statements are not just limited to race. Maybe in this way, the statement by Liquid 'Donald Trump' is not racist, could be considered a (alternative) fact?

GRSH

^ Indeed.

I agree , spacejunk
He hasn't really done anything, and it seems that every week is worse than the previous one. People say look at his actions rather than what he says or what the media says, and my question remains. What has he achieved so far?

No not confusing Isis for al Qaeda.
Isis have been in Afghanistan a long time but over last few years they have been concentrataing on Iraq and Syria but they on the run now after losing ground.
The Islamic state of Iraq and Syria didn't work out too well and Afghanistan offers a relatively safe haven for jihadis.

In my opinion, that's far more truthful than anything trump has said as potus.

He's made a career out of dog-whistling bigotry and ethnic/religious scapegoating. His treatment of - and language relating to - women and gender relations is vile.

His supporters will typically hound you for using terms like "racist" or "bigot".
This is just right-wing political correctness.
Many of the people who praise trump's blunt use of language seem to be very sensitive about the words people use to describe this president.
That's ok - they're entitled to be offended. And they can defend trump all they like.
It doesn't stop trump being a bigot.

I agree.

He's certainly "drained the swamp" of the advisers and other people who helped him win the election.

These people work for YOU. They should not waste your money. They should have to account for every dollar they spend. Trump is working for YOU. If hes fucking off on holiday and not doing his job then he should pay his own way with his money. Hes only been in office less than a year so should have the same leave owing to him that anyone else would. None. Thats lazy.

Fucking get to work slacker.

Zephyr- THANK YOU!! It seems to go little noticed that this President, his family, and all that that entails is costing the US a LARGE fortune in protection cost. Just the amount of property the Secret Service is now expected to cover is ridiculous! I remember the complaints regarding the Obamas wanting to go out on a date, and the cost of the Secret Service detail needed if they wanted to have dinner and a show together. The Secret Service has almost depleted the entire year's budget already, and we haven't even left the third quarter!!

I wonder why in US, people say Latino and Hispanic. Latino includes Hispanics, so why two different words?

They should just leave him to fend for himself
After all his violent rhetoric, you'd think he'd understand what he was getting himself into, but it doesn't seem so.

He complains about the life of tacky luxury he left behind, to be president - perhaps he should go back to his gold toilets and crass decadence - or just stay in the white house like a real president - rather than waddling around golf courses and farting around in florida.
It's time he did his job and stopped bankrupting his security detail with trips to his country clubs or other hang-outs for rich philistines that he frequents - if he ever wants to be taken seriously (impossible as that is at this point).
Time he stayed in the white house - the mansion he calls "a dump". Poor Baby, eh?
Can't handle an honest day's work, or an honest anything.
He's a fucking fraud, a hypocrite and a brat.

The USA needs to get him out of the presidency and before that grand jury befofe he (literally) starts the third world war.

Well said. I think we Americans have a (more than) healthy fear of allowing Pence to take the office. I know that many people have struggled with the lesser of these two evils (Pence or Trump) and I think that this is why there is not immediate cry to remove Trump. At least the rest of the world knows he is someone we don't believe in anymore.

The lesser of two evils is a pretty big constant in the American political world these days. I believe it is the only reason that we vote people into office anymore. If you look at the ads ran while just about any political office is up for grabs, it is more about how horrible the other person running is, then how wonderful a particular candidate is. The sheepeople are frightened and fear is a true motivator.

Yeah, it's sad - and it sucks when both choices seem incredibly bad.

I think it's a pretty common themse in a lot of western democracies, especially lately. I know that it is often said of we Australians that we seldom vote a government into office - we tend to vote bad or unpopular governments out, and that does seem to bd true over here.
Very few of our political leaders give us much cause for excitement - let alone trust or loyalty.

Pence is not an appealing alternative, and i guess its debatable as to whether or not the current disunity amongst the republican government is a good thing for those of us who are against trump - while i think it probably is, i do find it troubling that such an erratic man could be in charge of such a powerful military (and other influential and powerful arms of government), especially while his administration is on the ropes.
It's worrying to consider what trump could be capable of doing when cornered.

As far as boundaries and integrity go, he's proven not to have many (or to be led by them). Perhaps three more years of stalemate and decisive bullshit is a better option than a republican government united under the christian fundamentalist arch-conservatism of pence.
What a bleak choice.

Those tweets are from 2013 alasdairm.
Do you think anything could have changed more recently that could make trump change his mind?
if demonstrates a long-running pattern of saying one thing then saying or doing another...

the idea that this guy shoots straight and you always know where you stand with him - two traits for which his supporters praise him - is moronic.

I understand that, it's pretty much all you post lately lol
My point is afghanistan in 2013 and Afghanistan 2016 are different. Need a different strategy.

Hispanic is considered racist as the term Spic came from shortening it. I used to use Hispanic until this was explained to me. If there is further reason, I do not know it.

I believe "Hispanic" refers to people, countries, cultures, etc. that speak Spanish, whereas "Latinx" is a racial identity.

So Brazilians for example would be Latinx but not Hispanic.

There were two opinions about Iraq too. Two opinions about Republicans, Democrats. He's inconsistent.
Not too long ago he said that wars are not good and he wasn't going to start one.

Yes, Brazilians as well as French, Italians, Portuguese - they all speak languages which comes from Latin.

You're "non-white hispanic" on the government form, and latino to anyone you care to know.

Same way I'd call all the Aussies here "Pacific Islanders" if I took your census.

Can you tell us how they're different, what the strategy was, and what the strategy is.

Thank you
