U.S. Cruise Missile Attack On Syrian Air Base

Is there ever a time when it is appropriate for the usa to stop genocide?

That post was super informative drug_mentor, very much appreciated.

This really worries me that if we don't end up in WW3 that at best it will become operation enduring freedom 2.0, which lasted 13 years.

So much for nationalism, so much for America First :p

Where is the irrefutable proof that Syria released the gas?

I feel we're owed that before we start a new war, punishment is not strategy.

Are we going to start attacking countries that starve their citizens to death?

Because I think that is about as cruel as poison gas.

Trump just became the biggest sjw in the world with this attack while letting the DPRK test ICBM's in the same week.

One is a threat, the other is a payday.

Great post DM but i think the creation of Isreal and American backing of Isreals policies towards the Palestinians also has a large part to play in the current state of the Middle East. Maybe not as significant as what you mention but its still a massive festering sore in the region.

Great deflection. Question still stands if anyone wishes to answer it. Is there ever a time when stopping genocide is justified?

This has been going on for ages. Maybe US etc have not stepped in until now because of political pressure, lack of money to support a war, lack of coalition nations eager to help, risk of pissing off Saudi Arabia and risk to US CITIZENS should Russia get pissed off and start a war against US.

So any word on what the plan is now or has this bombing given him enough attention this week and we have to wait to see what happens in next weeks episode?

people aren't talking about his Russia scandal anymore, but the guy has dementia and is a psychopath in chage of the world's biggest military, so who knows?

the bombing itself was a pointless political exercise - the airfield attacked is still being used to launch air attacks. the planes weren't all destroyed and the runway is still functional.
but hey, it's got the Faux News propaganda machine and all the military industrial talking heads singing the praises of Don the Con, so mission accomplished, right?

next he'll be parading his fat arse on an aircraft carrier with a big fucking sign saying "WE DID IT"

Nah he will be at Miss Teen USA grabbing them by the pussy

I would really like it if CEP had a thread explaining the basic history of the middle east snd how things have come to this with ISIS and the relations between the middle Eastern Countries.

Ottomon Empire collapsed, with a bit of genocide in the process.

House of Saud hitched its star to Wahhabism (zealous conservative reform movement that sought to return to a "purer" form of Islam) and spread its ideology across Saudi Arabia as Saud grew in power after the Ottomans were gone. House of Saud has been remarkably stable though for a family that's huge and could arguably have competing claims on the throne.

Europe split up a good chunk of the former Ottoman empire with little regard to what people were living where. This lead to problems after decolonization.

Zionists decided to return to Islam. Britain got worried, a bunch of terrorist attacks later, and we got Israel and a recent history where everyone has blood on their hands.

Lebanon looked promising but has fallen into war over the last few decades.

Kurds are always getting screwed.

Iran had a king (well, a Shah), which the West liked, but the people didn't. A different zealous conservative reform movement overthrew the Shah. Iran and the rest of the Middle East have different interpretations of Islam. This causes issues.

In the ruins of the Ottoman empire, Ataturk decided to create a modern western state. This has had mixed results. Some years are good. Currently, Turkey is not in a good place.

Egypt has had a mixed history as well, and I'm having trouble even oversimplifying it like I've done above.

Iraq has been divided between the Kurds (in the north), the Shiites (in the south - these share a religion interpretation with Iran), and the Sunnis (which share their religion interpretation with the rest of the Middle East). The infamous dictator was Sunni, and tended to treat Kurds and Shiites badly (as in "lets gas 'em" badly). Also, he started a very long, very bloody war with Iran. Various groups seem pissed at each other. US slapped Saddam down once under Bush, then when Shrub was elected, he decided to fuck realpolitik and start a war that has destabilized the region. Daesh (aka ISIL, aka ISIS, aka fucking religious zealots that make the other religious zealots look damn near good) have developed in the aftermath. Also some Shiite groups have grown in power after the removal of Saddam, but I'm trying to simplify this explanation and they aren't really causing major problems ("major" being relative).

Add in some wars, and the habit of various leaders playing one ethnic group against another, and it's been a mess. There's oil money as well which has been used to prop up bad economies (check the unemployment rates of young men in various countries sometime).

All in all, a mess.

One that the US should ask very carefully about what it hopes to accomplish before touching the poo.

Uh oh, here come the soviets.

Russian Warship Steams Towards US Ships In Med
This is all for show, everyone knows Tramp is just a Soviet stooge.

Why do you say "Soviets"?

Interesting that this "story" hasn't been reported anywhere else, that i can see.
What do the Trump crowd call this? Fake news, right?

I just call it warmongering propaganda - but that's what Fox News is, for the most part; a mouthpiece for the US war machine and its narrow, deeply nefarious interests.
Disturbing stuff.

Looking online I found so many conflicting stories I think the real headline should read "Do journalists eat crayons"?

Why would Syrian forces have used chemical weapons? This makes absolutely no sense. The speed of the American reprisal is shocking. Something smells a lot like deception. If I was the enemy of Syria (I think that's Saudi Arabia if I understood all of DM's who's who in today war), I would hope no one check to close to see who really did this. Kinda smells like a mix of pearl harbour and the world Trade Centre.

Honestly the last group I would blame would be the Syrians. When the smoke clears, did someone just patsy Trump into action on a false flag?

I don't consider Trump stupid, but in desperation to get someone on his side publicly it would be easy to convince him to make a mistake. He might seem unfazed by the public outcry against him but no one can sustained true calm with the kind of ripping he keeps getting, calm and careful are not his catch words.

With the media saying anything negative they can regardless of truth I'm sure Trump is feeling a bit less loved. I can see his advisors suggesting blow some shit up to get people's attention. There isn't any reason I can find I'm willing to believe Syria was actually behind this chemical attack. I'm certain their will eventually be a better story but for now dubious and designed to trigger exactly the response it got seems to be a bit more real.
