In order for it to work, you would need a cohesive enough military with a low enough abandonment rate, and a military that is resistant to financial coercion. All big things to ask for a couple to be successful in the U.S.
I mention money because the U.S. is a corporatocracy/plutocracy at this point. A handful of non-government actors are running the government. A successful coup would have to also target the wealthiest people in America and somehow redistribute their money, assuming it could be accessed. These people own most of the capital in the U.S. The coup would also have to involve the banks and the Federal Reserve.
The other issue is that American style capitalism has been exported globally. Due to globalism, any coup would probably have to involve several countries at once, which is a big thing to organize.
That said... the economic system itself, in all its dire corruption, could ensure its own kind of global coup. Eventually enough people are going to be squeezed that there would be impetus. I just hope the world's ecology isn't totally destroyed by then.
