Just watched Party Monster (2003). Seth Green and the others did a great job, but some of the acting felt very fake and flimsy at times, like some TV acting. The premise of the film was quite odd; I'd never heard of the "Club Kids" till I watched that movie. Michael Alig was one weird dude... overall an entertaining and enjoyable film, though the whole thing felt like it was dragging on a bit at the end.
7/10
i've started this film twice and couldn't do it. it's grating. i think if i could just give it 20 minutes to get past their impressions of the effeminate accent, i might be able to watch it. but when he gives that whine about heroin being lame right after doing a bump, i switch to something else.
Starlet
the few moments it makes you care are uncomfortable, creating the nails on a chalkboard feel. unlike
Tangerine, it is not saturated with unique style. instead it has the typical low budget, handy-cam look.
creative work about flawed yet meaningful bonds is good stuff, but
Tangerine is such a better carrier of the director’s message about or exploration of the nature and role of relationships among the marginalized. the best part of Starlet is the ending, also where this message is best iterated. [spoil]that she does not care about news that is supposed to destroy the bond because the friendship is bigger and better than its flaws.[/spoil] the way the movie creates that plot point by moving on without giving the attempted disruption any more attention than the character who rises above it does.
netflix had been recommending this movie to me for over a year. the cover plus the title let me know it was about a porn star. as porn is not a subject that makes me feel good about life, i avoided it until realizing it was by the same director and writer as
Tangerine. the cover also suggested it might be a little seedy. poor, deceptive marketing that is often utilized by distributors who picked up a low budget films that doesn’t fit in their usual “sex and humor sells” strategy. this movie is not about the porn industry or t-and-a. there is one scene intended to give a grimmer look at the pretty, likable lead’s reality. you see a tit or two in the background of a few shots, but the film isn’t selling shitty sex scenes. so don’t let that stop you from selecting it. the real reason is to watch
Tangerine instead.
james ransone plays pretty much the same character in each, and he’s really good at it. he certainly has never caught my attention before.
