Kratom and Recovery

Kratom is great for some people that are sick and tired of being sick and tired but still need that little crutch,
I agree on the part that it doesnt help too much with the cravings. I think it's more for people not looking to get 'high' per se
but just want that gentle feeling of warm being. It also works wonders for opiate withdrawals IMO.
I am not going to lie- I relapsed a few days ago again, due to cravings for the kratom helped me feel normal again but took no cravings away.

But it its each own - it works for some - not everyone.
I am now using it again to manage thru withdrawals from my set back and it is helping me.

Kratom led me back to using also

I'm a seasoned relapser been to a dozen of treatments, homeless, jail etc. I started using kratom in one of my treatments and ended back on the needle in a month

Just a quick warning with my experience from Kratom... I have been to drug treatment 4 times in the past two years and was 7 months sober from everything, read how Kratom was all natural and relatively safe. If you're a serious drug addict like I am (IV Heroin, oxy, meth, and anything else that I can get) STAY AWAY from kratom. Tried it for a month, with tolerance sky rocketing and my mind kept telling me I needed more. Didn't take long to go back to shooting Oxys. My last dose of Kratom was 12g, when that didn't get me to where I wanted to be, back to the same old stuff... For the occasional user, Kratom is a sufficient high, energy, calmness and increased libido. But for the addict like me, kratom=relapse... I just wish I would have read a post like mine before I tried it. Probably wouldn't have mattered, but maybe someone out there is contemplating it.

You ran into a problem with kratom because you are chasing a high..if you still have strong urges to get high, then kratom won't help..Kratom is for people that want to curb withdrawals or long term opiate users who suffer from lethargy, excessive pain or anhedonia..I have been taking kratom and it helps immensely..6-7 months ago I started using 5 grams a dose and I still only use 5 grams per dose..it sets me right and doesn't get me high..I don't keep raising my dosage because I don't look for a high

Kratom helps me be more functional..it might provide a small mood boost but most of all it helps my lethargy, low motivation and gives me pain relief...I know 2-3 heroin addicts and im debating on introducing them to kratom..they live for the high though so kratom probably won't help these types..

I've heard kratom kills cravings yet for others, it doesn't do anything..I find that strange

How long have you been sober? This lethargy you describe is pretty normal when you get off your DOC.
There are ways to deal with it. Kratom would be better than methadone IMO but it has to be under some sort of supervision. Right?

So that you can do it without putting in risk your goals.

Someone wrote that kratom is an opiate... Just an FYI, ITS NOT. Kratom's psychoactive substance is mitriganya. Kratom works as both a sedative and a stimulant depending on dosage and strain.
I'm glad someone started this thread. I was addicted to opiates (first pills then dope, then shooting dilaudid and dope) for 3 years, clean for 2 then on suboxone for 2 1/2 years following a relapse. I've been off subs since December and used kratom to ease withdrawals. I'm still using it as the lingering joint pain makes it very difficult to sleep at night (though covering my elbows and knees in lidocaine patches does help...but I ran out). Anyway, kratom is part of my daily routine and has been a god send for being able to detox without upsetting my routine as a parent, wife, member of society and active participant in my recovery. I'm a TrueBlue drug addict so putting down drugs and alcohol isn't where my recovery ends. An entire overhaul of who I am as a person is absolutely necessary for me to stay away from self destructive behaviors. Kratom is just another tool that I'll eventually have to face when I feel well enough to put it aside. But its okay for me because its not doing me more harm than good at this point in my life.
Be good to yourselves,
-Jess

Kratom just makes me crave the full agonist experience. I know it can help some people stay off the junk but that hasn't been my experience.

Kratom has been a life saver for me! I was doing 100-150 mg of oxycodone a day for a year. Kratom withdrawals are nothing compared to oxy withdrawals and Kratom masked 80-90 percent of my oxy withdrawal. I have had withdrawals from practically every opiate there is and oxycodone was by far the worst for me.

I started at 8-10 grams of Bali Kratom a day and gradually decreased my daily dose to 2.5 grams a day. When I jumped off that dose I had mild withdrawals. The hardest withdrawal symptom for me, and it seems to be specific to Kratom, was moderate to severe depression that lingered for several weeks which I have experienced before from Kratom withdrawal alone.

I have also had great success with doing a short suboxone taper after cessation of oxycodone then going to the Kratom. But how successful is it? I obviously continue to go back to opioids. The success is in reducing the severity and pain of withdrawals.

I have been reading that kratom extract is gaining more favor as a tool to ease symptoms of opiate withdrawal which is debilitating, and as we all know very uncomfortable. There are many articles that informs how kratom can be used to ease the symptoms of opiate withdrawal.

In one of them I've read that Kratom contains alkaloids that interact with the body's opiate receptors in similar ways that endorphin and opium. And that's probably why some people tend to relapse when using Kratom after having quit opiates.

There are threads here in BL about people who are addicted to Kratom like anybody else who's addicted to painkillers and not only they suffer withdrawals but they also have problems to follow through the recovery process.

I agree with Kush when he says it can help but it's not for everyone. After all we are all different and have gone through many different experiences. So what's good for you may not be good for me.

I've used kratom in the past to help with alcohol and benzo withdrawal, and to also get off trazodone. It worked wonders for me, but I was never huge into opiates, and would only resort to opiates if there was nothing else available (they make me really nauseous). Kratom is very obviously an opiate in effects imo. I can see where kratom may help with your withdrawals, but I can also see where kratom may drive you to relapse. If I were in your position I would soberly consider the intensity of your withdrawal, and ask myself if easing the symptoms is worth a potential relapse and having to start from square one. The other concern is that you may end up replacing one addiction for another, and have to repeat the process of withdrawal, that is just prolonging the discomfort. Opiate withdrawal sucks but it's relatively short and gets better the longer you refrain from using. Good luck!

I was clean from methadone and all other drugs for 16 months, I was still lethargic and apathetic..forcing myself through the work day only to come exhausted..my diet was clean and I always worked out so those areas I had covered..had health panels and everything was fine so ..

To be quite honest I still find myself looking for my old me. The social and fun guy I used to be.
It's frustrating but when I balance the pros and cons I manage to keep moving.
I have also used methadone, done that for 8+ years trying to handle my 'former' opiate addiction.

Keep doing the things I've written to you. It's hard to be patient when we are suffering. I know.
Try exercising you'll feel better about yourself. Do things that you like, hobbies, music, books. You'll fell good again.
You can do whatever you want. Trust me, you are in control even when our addition talks louder.

So my buddy from the states is saying he will send me more this time, a whole kilo. Id fell bad to not pay him for that but he seems like a nice guy whos been through a lot and wants to help me get clean.

I should be able to kick this shit with that amount! And I can always buy more, but I might not have income soon, i need to find a new job.

So considering your situation I guess this is working as harm reduction for you.

I think it's interesting that it's also used as a "maintenance drug" for methamphetamine addicts in southeast Asia

Indeed Verri, you are way better off with Kratom for now, specially considering Dilaudid.
Hope you get over these withdrawals soon!
Take care!
Erik
