I am afraid to say it, but I kinda like Trump. I have followed him since I first heard of him and this guy is a straight shooter. That's why the others had to gang up on him. I really want someone who is not going to duck with marijuana reform or the states that have it.

It is very pragmatic bardo if you read history you know that it is a very real and possible thing.

You don't need to look at history, you can just look at conflicts happening right now.

With that said, what is the medieval, pragmatic equivalent of a black-hawk helicopter? This isn't Braveheart. In politics one must make and take compromise in order to get things done. "I like Bernie's economic, foreign, social, (maybe) tax, and education policies. But....... bullets. I need more than he wants me to have. NO DEAL."

this is anti-pragmatism.

I'm still maintaining my position that the Republicans actually gaining control of congress and the presidency would be a bad thing for their future chances. Democrats have captured the center, Republicans are now the far right party, and extreme politics may sound good on the campaign trail, but sucks in practice.

Wouldn't this require the Democrats to revamp themselves into a more left-wing party in order to drag the tug of war banner back over moderate ground? If our choices are the far right and the center, then the left is entirely voiceless.

No way, man. I'm not a professional political commentator but I'm almost 100% convinced that it is, in fact, the Republicans who stand absolutely no chance in this election. In fact, I will eat my left hand if our next POTUS has an "R" next to his name. They simply stand no chance whatsoever from what I see.

You could be right. I just don't know if ol' bernie is very electable. I certainly wouldn't count on Hillary because I don't think anybody trusts her. Nobody seems particularly strong in the red corner either, but I think third party voting could make or break it for both sides. The dems show up for the main event, midterms? Not so much.

I am glad to see that most people seem to be sick and tired of the same old politician types. I think we will see more of this trend in years to come and hopefully new faces to choose from. I think lots of millennials are starting to have more interest in politics now, and that will shift the landscape a little bit.

Right now, I'd like to see Bernie get the nomination, but it's not going to be easy.

Isn't he a pediatric neurosurgeon? His vaccine stance and views on evolution is just politics IMO. He has to overcome being black to a bunch of the idiots in the religious right and this is how he does it. Dude believes in evolution 100%. Not sure if you realize just how hard it is to become a neurosurgeon. Look at Hillary she is a deluded dishonest monster of a woman. I truly do not even want to know what devious plot motivates that woman ffs.

he's a climate change denier so his 'science' chops aren't quite what you'd like us to believe.

droppers, can you define "legit" for us please (in the context of "legit black president")?

kthxbye

of course they do. they don't care about what is actually happening, they just are about all that oil and other money drying up.

i expect this from bush et. al. sad to learn that ben carson is no better.

I dunno, most of the candidates fully support the theory of evolution. His comments on Satan and evolution just make him look like a fringe lunatic. Though I guess I could say a good portion of the base could be considered the same.

I'd say it's pretty damned hard enough to become a general surgeon, even.

Legit = 51%+ black

All republicans have to be deniers. Yet again it is politics Ali.

It really sounds like it could be a scene straight out of Dumb and Dumber. If Obama were just an average dude on the street, how many of these people would consider him a black man, I wonder.

Maybe. If the Democrats are the center, and can gain control of the House, Senate, and the presidency, then we'd still have a moderate government.

If our choices are the far right and the center, then the left is entirely voiceless.

I would say that's basically true. I'm not seeing a lot of leftist policies being made.

"Black" identity is about some notion of "racial purity"?
I always thought it was about identity, perception and surface-level discrimination.

*Is the racially-motivated opposition to Obama really that fucking stupid?

*...rhetorical question.

The amount of random people that I have met that support trump is ridiculous. The owner of this local health food store just completely threw me for a loop. Listening to NPR on the back I thought she was gonna be sanders all the way.

If trump does get elected I do not think he is going to be a bastion on conservatism. I think he will be concerned with making the country as prosperous as possible. When the country becomes proserous again all these other issues disappear. Lack of Money is the the root cause of most people's problems IMO.

For who, though?

Technically, the country has never been more prosperous than it is right now. It just so happens that the distribution of that prosperity is so densely packed into the pockets of a handful of people (like Trump).

Trump's tax plan isn't that "conservative". Trump has actually stated he'd raise taxes on the rich, including himself.

Obama said the same thing.

Nevertheless, as far as tax reform goes, it's in need of deep overhaul. Moving the rates around a little bit is a start, but there are deep seated issues involving effective taxation that need to be addressed, and I just don't see Donald Trump (or any candidate on either side of the aisle, really) tackling them. Besides, presidents aren't kings. There are 535 other representatives to factor in here.
