I was wondering what people's favorite legal anti-anxiety drug is, and by legal I mean something that does not require a prescription in the United States specifically?

There are a number that are spoken about on this forum that I don't know a whole lot about but these are the ones I am constantly hearing mentioned: Etizolam, baclofen, phenibut, gabapentin, pregabalin.

I know I have heard of more mentioned on here but their names are escaping me.

I am also not sure which of the aforementioned actually require a prescription but I'll look it up myself if I'm not allowed to ask legal questions as I am not trying to break rules.

Which drug to people find to work best for social anxiety specifically as opposed to generalized anxiety?

I find Codeine good (can buy without prescription in the UK, like Codeine Linctus).

I've also found Promethazine of some help in making me go to sleep when I have severe anxiety at night. (Can be brought over the counter in the UK)

I've heard many people find anti-histamines good for anxiety.

when i dont wanna take a benzo i take nyquil or benadryl or zyrtec when i wanna go to sleep
not all together i just choose one lol

TBH. When I decided to try to treat my own depression I used 5-HTP and it had my anxiety very low and helped a lot with my mood and I was able to sleep easily. I took 50-100mg every day. I then read that high levels of serotonin is bad for the heart so I stopped taking it and I also heard how 5-HTP in particular was bad for you.

L-Tyrosine? Is it that? It's supposed to be better. Or is it L-Tryptophan? I really dunno. It's similar to 5-HTP I believe.

I also would take 2-4mg CPM and it worked like an anti-depressant and anxiolytic. I would take it in school and be really happy and calm.

Obviously you can't expect to treat your everyday anxiety with pills everyday but those worked for me. Good luck!

I would say that phenibut is the most potent; however I feel like most people who try to use it as an anxiolytic wind up physically dependent on it, which makes it cause a worse problem than the person initially had. Therefore phenibut is too dangerous to be the best non-prescription anxiolytic. I thought it needed to be said.

Some people like vistaril but I think anti-histamines are sedatives and therefore they may help with anxiety but not while making the person less of themselves.

L-Theanine is very good for some people, but in most cases tolerance builds quickly. Unlike some anxiety meds, it will not help with withdrawals in most cases. I like L-theanine though. Great for supporting caffeine.

No one ever says nicotine, but truth is for many of us nicotine is a god send in terms of anxiolytic effect.

We haven't mentioned alcohol yet, obviously this has terrible consequences for chronic use, but it'd be a lie to say alcohol can't be an anxiolytic.

Kratom anyone? Surely some people get an anxiolytic effect from certain strains of kratom, but again this substance has addictive process and should be taken carefully.

I don't want to get into lemon balm and kava kava and all that shit whose efficacy is actually placebo.

That's my summary, take what you want from it.
Sure we could get into things like kava kava, val

L-theanine is really subtle but decent. It definitely has an effect on how caffeine feels (for me) and makes it easier to sleep. The downside I guess is that it does not seem to last very long. I'd recommend picking some up anyway though.

In regards to your list of drugs in OP, pregabalin is schedule v and gabapentin requires a prescription, and etizolam is going to get banned pretty soon if it hasn't been already.

Man, you've been battling anxiety and depression for a long time. I think it's time you take a different approach outside of the world of drugs. I know, I know, you are, but you just want something for "breakthrough" anxiety.....try exercise, diet change, managing life's stresses, setting up goals, immersing yourself in hobbies that truly interest you, become part of something greater than yourself, get into a routine of healthy activities, etc..

You'll probably argue, call these suggestions cliche, talk about how "some people need drugs to function", etc, just as you always do, so I'll stop right here.

Kratom. Without a doubt IMO.

Yeah, personally I think it's one of the best anxiolytics out there, other than prescribed benzodiazepines. Worked better for me than some of the more common anxiolytic alternatives like phenibut or etizolam.

I alternate kratom one day and 5htp the next and take a one or two day break each week..i do t know if its placebo with the 5htp but im alot less stressed and anxious when i take it and kratom is just awesome

I do exercise daily and it helps but isn't always enough and I get therapy as well.

Your suggestions are good, but when true social anxiety strikes none of them make it go away.

I'm not saying your ideas are not good but many have not had the sort of social anxiety I am speaking of (though some have) and usually those of us who have experienced it feel that exercise and diet are not always enough.

I haven't known anything other than drugs to actually prevent it from happening in the first place.

I would simply use Klonopin like I had in the past but in case I can't find a new doc to prescribe it I need something else.

Kratom is great for that yes, but I need something that won't really alter my consciousness much when I use it.

I forgot to add in that detail.

Can 5-HTP be mixed with Lexapro?

I think I heard it shouldn't be and I'm no Lexapro so if so then I can't use that.

I'm sorry Myco, we don't allow "what drugs should I take" threads, even though I know you started it with the best of intentions...

Everyone will respond differently to anxiolytics. What works well for one person may be ineffective or make the problem worse for another. It's up to you, and your medical assistance, to figure out what does and doesnt work.

Another thought: At some point in time you may want to cut your losses, stay away from "natural" and "herbal" remedies, and work with a psychiatrist to find something that works for you, that you don't abuse.
