Hi,
have been tied down to hydrocodone for too many years to remember. Not a large dose, but enough to make me a slave to always making sure I had a supply at hand. Only averaged about three (10's) a day. I quit cold turkey and had several nights of bed sweats, restless leg, little sleep, upset stomach, etc. but now just left with the mind games making me wonder will I use again. This time I want to quit for good. I am 59 years old and work 5 to 6 days per week. Gonna be a grand dad in about a month. I just told my wife yesterday of my quitting. She has noticed changes in my behavior, but assumed I have been fighting a bad cold.
Anyway, I do not go to meetings and most likely will not. I read lots of forums and just going a day at a time. Thanks for allowing me to join this group.
Sincerely,
g

Welcome to the forums guidog. Congrats on quitting hydrocodon and getting the good news that you'll be a granddad in a month!

Thanks for writing:
it has almost been a month with no pills. Looking back over the past it's really been 30 years of lorcet use on a regular basis. Once during the past 30 years I got clean for about 14 months and started back. I am doing pretty good on day 27 but admit when 5:00 pm comes each day I have to focus very hard on my goal to remain clean. It scares me to think I could weaken and fall back in the trap with just one vulnerable moment. One thing not mentioned yet was I use to drink heavily on top of the pills. But after quitting the pills the urge to drink has almost gone away. I was using the booze to enhance the high from the pills. I had only been drinking on top of the pills for about five years. But the ability to stop the drinking seems to come easy for me.
My daily pill time usually never started before 4:00 pm and most of the time it was 5:00. That's why after work it's so tough.
Appreciate and recommendations.
Sincerely,
g

Well done & welcome, you could try coming onto BL during your weak moments, there's plenty of success stories to boost your mojo in the recovery & sober living forums. A side nite,- I'm a regular drinker too, but even the thought of alcohol without hvng had oxy that day, & I'm literally gagging, trying not to throw up.

All the best,

Rtp

Hi guidog :) Good to hear your success! I'm trying to beat this shit too. It has been a struggle and I'm in round 10. We're both bloody but I'm gonna uppercut this creep called my addiction and try to win in this round. Good luck! Don't listen to the creep. :)

Thanks again everyone for writing. Been off the hydrocodon 32 days now. My withdrawls are pretty much gone, but the mental cravings are still present. It's like the devil keeps making me think that I can take a couple on special occasions. But I know better to believe that. My wife of 29 years old is wonderful support. She says she hated the way I would act on the pills especially after I would drink heavy on top of them.
I feel good about remaining clean, but need continued help dealing with the temptations. Every day around 5:00 pm by brain reminds me that I use to take the drugs during this time after work. I could use a good book to help the temptations.
Thanks again guys. I appreciate any comments.
Sincerely
G

you should do really good with support and love from your wife and this community. as long as you don't isolate yourself the drug won't fully take over; isolation and hostility can be addictions best friend. *supportive bro hug*

Just say know and pill_billy,
appreciate your kind words. Why does your brain continue to tell you it's ok to take a couple of pills today since I have it under contol now. It's the devil talking to me. I know I have to quit for good. Put the damn pills behind me and live a clean life. It's either none or back in the same track as the past 20 plus years. Can a person stay straight after taking for so long? I hate the nagging devil inside my brain. I am determined not to become a prisoner to the pills again.

Can anyone recommend a good book that will help me stay off of pain pills? It's been 35 days since I quit lorcets etc.

you can read khaled houseinni's books; the kite runner, a thousand splendid suns, and and the mountains echoed.
you can also read watership down, a dogs life: an autobiography of a stray, or the how to train your dragon series. there's also harry potter, zefrank's self help book (that's not the title but you can find it under him as the author), and various others i could mention but words fail me due to too many books to mention; lol.

I am 59 now. Honestly have been on them for probably closer to 25 years or so. A few loose doctors would give prescriptions with several refills. Paid 4 to 5 dollars for each pill on the black market. They have always been around. Others would get prescriptions for a hundred and sell them. So most came from quack doctors. They made money from the office visits and would writ the scripts for everyone to keep coming back over and over. It was easy. Just took money.
