A Warning on Nutmeg

"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
In these early days of the holiday season, as cooks begin sifting through recipes rich in spice and sugar, consider this small warning from toxicologists: Measure your nutmeg carefully.

Very carefully.

Of all the well-loved seasonal spices, nutmeg stands out for its long and slightly twisted history. In the Middle Ages, it was used to end unwanted pregnancies. More recently, desperate prisoners embraced it as a rather miserable drug substitute. So, on occasion, have teenagers, some of whom wound up at poison control centers. A couple of years ago, a man in Sweden claimed that nutmeg had induced him to spit at strangers on the street.

“It’s not that nutmeg cases are that common,” said Leon Gussow, an Illinois toxicologist who publishes a blog for professionals called The Poison Review. “But toxicologists do recognize it as one of the more interesting spices in the kitchen.”

As Dr. Gussow noted recently in Emergency Medicine News, awareness of the spice’s poisonous and exotic side effects has been around for some time. Nutmeg is the seed of an evergreen tree, Myristica fragrans, native to Indonesia although now cultivated widely. The spice mace comes from a thin protective layer that encloses that seed.

The spice trade first brought nutmeg to Europe in the 12th century, where it rapidly gained a reputation as a seed of unusual potency, strong enough to fight infection (including the Black Plague), stimulating enough to bring on menstruation, poisonous enough to induce an abortion. It also earned shady credentials for inducing a kind of hazy, druglike high that could include hallucinations.

The effect was potent enough that nutmeg mythology eventually became part of prison culture, even into modern times. In the 1965 book, “The Autobiography of Malcolm X,” the activist describes purchasing it from inmates in prison, concealed in matchboxes, and stirring it into water. “A penny matchbox full of nutmeg had the kick of three or four reefers,” he wrote.

Toxicologists say that description is somewhat misleading, an overly romantic account of nutmeg’s generally unpleasant effects. It takes a fair amount of nutmeg — two tablespoons or more — before people start exhibiting symptoms. These can include an out-of-body sensation, but the most common are intense nausea, dizziness, extreme dry mouth, and a lingering slowdown of normal brain function. Dr. Gussow said nutmeg experimenters have compared it to a two-day hangover.

For any given drug, the reviews from individuals who try it will run the gamut, depending on who they are and what they bring to the experience. That's why I think a drug's duration is one of the biggest factors in the level of risk involved in using it. Trying (or recommending) any drug whose duration is measured in days is not a decision I would take lightly. It's an experience I'd probably only consider if I had at least 3-4d to burn, with really no obligations or anything I'd anticipate needing to be sober or non-hungover for, and no one counting on me to be functional for anything. (That's a tall order for any working professional with a family!)

If you try a drug that's a real "businessman's trip", with first alerts to recovery of baseline lasting <1h, it's not as big a deal if you don't happen to like it, because you only have to hang on for a short while. If you try a drug lasting half a day or more, and don't happen to tolerate it well, that's a long, long time to hang on!

The reports I've read of nutmeg, whether the tripper liked it or not, all seem to end the same way: By the end, I was tired of the experience (both the mental and the body load), and couldn't wait for it to end. Middling reviews of LSD and methamphetamine also tend to say this. But almost all nutmeg reviews, even the good ones, say this. To me, that's a big minus. Being "moreish" is not a good attribute for any drug to have, but if you've got some self-control, it's not a dealbreaker. But life is just to short for any drug that's "lessish", if you will.

Malcolm X used it in jail when he was coming off other drugs if I recall correctly, from his book that I read along time ago.

I tried this when I was a kid and it for sure was a 2 day hangover and I puked more times then I can remember. Plus it made my eyes super red.

You bring up a good point; one which I share.

Yes indeed... A "high" lasting multiple days from one dose of any given intoxicant doesn't sound very pleasant, nor like a good idea in this fast-paced, quick-fix society of ours.

Perhaps the only exception to this - based on what I've consumed - would be a µ-opioid (full) agonist in modest dosages out of concern for the long half-life and the potentially fatal consequences of a gradual buildup in my system over the first few days.

Re. Nutmeg - I'd rather shove a cactus up my ass in an attempt to intoxicate myself.

Perhaps if i was stuck on a boat for 2 weeks at a time with not even booze to get buzzed on i might try it. A guy i knew who worked on a fishing boat used it once when all the hash ran out. This guy had taken everything in the books from Barbs to smack and PCP (the latter IV ffs) and he said he would never in hell try nutmeg again. He doesn't get sea sick but he said he spent 2 fucking days barely able to hold down water because of the nutmeg.

Id think if i had little money and no connections id just go to the pharmacy and buy some DXM and atleast get a decent high.

As for drugs that last for days me and my friend once had a competition on who could take shrooms the most days in a row. We both made it to 4 days and quit because we both felt fucked for a lack of a better word.

I think you are making an important point, but I also want to mention that, if you have a shitty trip on, say, salvia or DMT, it might only last 20 minutes, but it might FEEL like it lasts many lifetimes. I experiences several lifetimes of fear and terror when I took ayahuasca the first time, and even though the difficult part probably only lasted 2 hours in real life, I will never forget it...

i remember pretty vividly the overwhelming sensation of disgust as i tried to heap 25 grams of freshly ground nutmeg into my mouth to swallow

even if you add too much nutmeg to something it will taste repulsive, and people wont eat it surely

i took it so that i wouldn't have to go to a christian camp when i was 14, because i would be sick, but my trusty parents took me anyway and i spent the first 2 days paralysed in the car, feeling like i was incredibly ill and stoned at the same time. definitely not worth the geometric patterns i saw at t+ 6hrs

Touche, slim. High dose ketamine is another one that comes to mind. Not to go off topic but this speaks to the importance of having a sober trip sitter, preferably one who knows both you and the drug you're about to try for the first time, whenever it's a drug that produces severe time dilation. When my wife tried JWH-073 for the first time, and took too much with no cannabis cross tolerance, she said it made all the difference in the world that I was there to hold her hand and calmly repeat, "This is only a drug experience, and it will be over in a couple of minutes."

^ No doubt, sober help from someone you trust during a bad trip can make all the difference.
My wife comforted me as much as was possible during my difficult ayahuasca experience, and it definitely helped.
She has also saved me during several mis-adventures on mushrooms when I couldn't remember if all of this had already happened, and I was just experienceing things for the second time (which may sound silly, but it really shook me up pretty badly then). Her gentle massage and kind voice guided me toward a better place.
The one time I had a bad trip (on LSD) without her, I was stuck in bad cycle for a solid 8 hours. Nasty...:(

I hear ya man.

I tried Salvia Divinorum (spelling may be off) only once, and while the intoxicating effects are quite short, for me being the one that was under the influence of it, made it seem like it went on forever.

That is some potent shit, and not pleasant at all, but that's just me. I'm sure there's someone out there who likes it.

I'm glad I decided to ask a buddy to babysit my ass just in case, because apparently I nearly took a swan dive off of the balcony.

Edit - I should mention that this was about 7 years ago - meaning that I now tend to be more careful, selective, passive, et cetera, when it comes to trying new things.

Daymn, sounds scary! Good thing you didn't jump.

I have tried smoking salvia once and DMT twice. There is a similarity, but I find DMT to be life-affirming, whereas salvia seems random.
Both took me away from consensus reality as far as imaginable!
I would try DMT again, but probably not salvia.
