Population Control

Don't forget old people holding onto large properties as financial security, driving young families further out into the suburbs. Or hording wealth so as to pay for ever increasing retirement years.

So you think the solution would be something like Soylent Green? Baby Boomers are going to live a lot longer than they deserve and are quickly becoming a huge burden. Lets start counting their teeth and make that a cut-off. Or just go by age. It would solve a couple of our problems -- Old people with solid jobs who refuse to retire and thus keep the younger generations from having those solid jobs, Old people who have retired and have expensive health problems are a burden on the health care system, old people who are bankrupting the social security and pension systems.

Wouldn't it be cool if instead of paying a social security tax, you could invest that money into a ROTH IRA or traditional IRA account which could not be touched until one's retirement age.

So, in this case; the government could never touch the money you invested into the system AND you would be stimulating the economy by investing :) You could invest in stock, mutual funds, or bonds :D

Would that ever work? Anyone know?
 
It appears to be working in Australia and NZ. Then again you need a population to willingly deposit 10% of their salary into such an account
 
If it was mandatory to either pay 6.2% in Social Security or use that for a personal retirement account (which cannot be touched until retirement age), I'd do my own retirement account. Of course, I'd assume your employer would have to match 6.2% (Sweet :D).

12.4% total for Social Security or a IRA.. We could all be millionaires! Not with the Social Security tough..

Maybe competent people should be allowed that option.
 
I go into nursing homes daily for my job. I think it would be best if we as a society accepted a more graceful end. There are 80+ year olds in there that just sit in wheelchairs talking to themselves or crying/whimpering, with stuffed animals, or baby dolls. It is crap.

Some you can tell are still members of society. They communicate well. Yada. I can't apply the same to these. I don't quite know. But so often seeing these others, I want to die before anything similar happens.

It makes you really wonder what the point is, these places.

Dying institutionalized and with dementia is a disgraceful way to die. Why doesn't surviving family take more responsibility and at least let them die in a better environment, assuming they weren't abusive and evil to their family when they were in good health? I think senicide and suicide should be offered as alternatives as well. Better that than dying like an animal or in many cases, a vegetable.

because it's pretty fucking hard to look after someone who needs care 24/7 WHILE WORKING A JOB AND LOOKING AFTER YOUR OWN SELF!!!
 
OK, I realize it's hard to do with the way most households are single family households... but what if they have extended family? It would be a sacrifice and would take a lot of planning to work it out, but if they had been good parents, wouldn't it be worth it at least to try? Maybe they can make arrangements. If it were me, all I'd ask is that somebody would carry me up a mountain and leave me on the mountaintop in the winter.
