Health warnings on alcohol bottles should be compulsory – MPs

Whoever pays attention to health warnings on packets anyway? We all know the possible health risks and printing them on cigarettes or bottles and cans isn't going to suddenly make you think 'oh no, i won't buy this can of beer that i want because of something that may happen'.

Fucking nobody, its just to make it look as if they're doing something about it whilst they happily rake all the tax in.

Lets go the whole hog. Maybe they should all come with an explanatory booklet, possibly even a video

Yes, they are quite happy to tell us how we may be killing ourselves and even happier to tax us for the right to do it

Not defending excessive taxes but alcohol is the most destructive drug to society (Source: Nutt et al., 2010) and the taxpayer has to foot the bill somehow.

Unfortunately only the most conscientious drinkers will likely pay any heed to such warnings, and they're probably not the people we should be concerned about.

Yeah, in this political climate it's kinda hard to get positive about the chances of legalized street drugs.

Not sure I quite agree with that really. I don't see anything wrong with health warnings. I'd have 'em on legalised street drugs too. Forewarned, forearmed. Plus, some people really do need telling that drinking 20 pints a night is not so good for them. Sad but true. Choosing to ignore such warnings is one thing but the more awareness of any health risks associated with substances that can be moreish in the short term and addictive if you work at it makes perfect sense to me really.

I wonder if it will all be sold in plain packaging soon as well?

Oddly enough I got coldcalled to take part in the survey about those mooted changes to tobacco advertising and the like. I said I was in favour of plain packaging for tobacco products. Tobacco is very different to alcohol cos it is 100% bad for you even at moderate levels. It's poison pure and simple. Early evidence from Australia where plain packaging has been introduced suggests it works too. Although they have far more anti-tobacco awareness stuff going in general I think. Also got more pro-tobacco advertising too oddly enough. Or did when they were considering introducing plain packaging anyway.

I see it much like cigarette ads. I used to really like 'em. Nice ads, very stylish, very memorable. Presumably very effective too. I like it better that they exist mainly as memory though. I really don't see any need for it. The standard excuse that they should be allowed to advertise cos ads are only aimed at getting existing smokers to switch brands is clearly bullshit. Smokers are a loyal bunch. They smoke whichever brand they happen to have settled on when they first started smoking for the most part. Can count the number of smokers who switch brands on the yellowish-brown fingers of one hand.

They should put the labels on products with alcohol as an ingredient

E.g. put a picture of rotting teeth on a Listerine bottle

I may have spotted a modicum of sarcasm :sus:

I did once try drinking aftershave. Can't quite recall why but presumably cos I was young and stupid. Tasted a lot like aftershave.

(was but a miniture incidentally - even i am not quite that stupid... well... not that stupid anyway - was probably the promise of 90% abv that raised an eyebrow knowing my teenage self 8))
