OK I've left EADD.... But with this topic, I've got to put in my 2 penny's worth. The staff of this site are all volunteers and has an extremely busy job to do in order to keep the forums running. They have to keep an eye out for trolls; spammers, scammers, drug dealers, as well as general breaking of the rule - in order to keep the site running, keep it clean and safe so that it helps members and doesn't give authorities a reason to take it down.
A chat room is more instantaneous and make their job more difficult. There is more of a chance for people to try and source, sell drugs as well as many other stuff that I'm sure the BL may not be able to manage if there was a chat room. As well as this, certain authorities can keep track of anything dodgy for years and what if that happened but staff missed it because chat was too fast, for any reports to go through to staff for them to stop certain things?
As well as this, a chat facilities would, as MDB has implied, strengthen any possible cliques and widen any possible gaps between new members and old members. If new members felt isolated, how long would they stick around? If they could not have their questions answered because everyone was in chat - or because everyone were too busy talking to one another "in the chat room" and ignoring them - how long would they stick around?
Yes with forums it's not as instantaneous as a chat room and yes one has to refresh and so forth, but it is easy for both members and staff to keep an "eye out" and not miss anything, that doesn't necessarily mean anything dodgy but also anything of value, anything of benefit such as harm reduction.
As some members have already stated, by just sticking with the forum, everything is there and easy to read at the individual members' own time - as opposed to having to "chase the chat." New members can read older posts and take value from them. For instance, if a member had swollen arms from an intravenous Heroin and were concerned, they could quite easily type something like "safety IV use" or whatever into BL's search facility (search box situated top, right of screen) and be instantly met with a list full of links containing information on safe IV use. Now what would happen if most of this was discussed on a chat facility, set at real time? That information would be lost to the naked eye (yet, as I previously mentioned if anything dodgy happened in chat - and was missed, government software could be used in order to bring it all back, thus not only darkening Bluelight's name - but affecting the possibly safety of participants here and possibly damaging Bluelight's important mission of harm reduction).
As also mentioned, in chats "bots" can be used for years. Just ask Yahoo how long they have been trying to patch up their chat sites from "hackers" trying to use laggers on people, boot scripts, spamming software, software to take people's IDs and much, much, much more. Chat facilities are also more apt to receive a lot of drama and petulant arguments, which are easily put a stop to in Bluelight's current format by moderators closing threads; UAing posts etc. How would this be stopped in a instant chat format?
As well as wishing for more instant chat format to discuss things in more detail, Bluelight already has the PM system, which is quite instantaneous, depending on the individual's connection. Plus a log is kept, although we each are only allowed 100 E-mails at a time (including sent E-mails) Bluelight has a facility where these can be downloaded - so members can easily keep a log of anything that may be of use to them in future.
Plus, in my opinion, whenever a forum has a "chat facility" present it always looks tacky and less professional. If something is not broken why try to fix it?
