yeah im glad i seem to have come to some sort of shared understanding about that much at least. Still not sure about the technical profficiency thing, so im gonna stop harping on about it, it doesnt matter that McGowan and Dylan dont have technically 'nice' voices. Their gruffness adds the special ingredient of individualty to their music. Call it one of my foibles if you like but technical profficiency only matters in some cases imo.

My favourite band are Red Hot Chili Peppers. I seen them live twice. First time in Phoenix Park, Dublin, the next time in Manchester. I have a tattoo of their lego on my leg.

I love Anthony Kiedis n I read his autobiography, Scare Tissue. It was about his drug addiction. Was an interesting read.

Evey

RHCP are wicked... read that autobiography as well, surprised Anthony Kiedis is still alive

sort of related but it's weird how I love 80's hardcore (Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, etc) and like 90's California punk ( NOFX, Rancid, etc) but can't get into much older, 70's, first wave sort of punk stuff. I don't really care for Sex Pistols that much.

3rd Wave Ska/Ska-Punk.

I love Sublime. I saw them in London when they reformed briefly with Rome Ramirez

I don't much care for much other than The Clash in terms of 'first wave' Punk though.

PS Chatty, apparently Streetlight Manifesto are touring the US.. so hopefully a UK tour might happen at some point soon. :D :D

Oh oh oh... would be great.

For someone who is so passionate about music, I've been to so few gigs. 5-6 in total including festivals. I need to change that.

I've been to quite a few local band nights though. Get some real gems, especially with the touring ones.

21 Jump Street on channel 5.... haven't seen this for ages, brilliant film

Is one of the best, 22 Jump Street is out soon I think

...could already be out and I'm behind the times and too lazy to check

I don't think you understand what 'punk' means, beyond the narrowest, most rigid definition.

Chiming in a bit late here. But IIRC youre not a fan of electronic stuff. But isn't that punk evolved ? If punk is started as a reaction to public school boy prog rock then isn't the ultimate expression of that music that literally anyone can make with no knowledge and only needing very basic equipment ?
And the fact that you can love a dance track without knowing who its by, or you can love an electronic artist's work but never see their face or know there real name, isnt that the punk spirit ?
Or would you say that the anger is essential to it ?

I concur. Electronic music is surely a direct descendent of punk - has very much the same DIY values and often rather similar attitudes. And there's plenty of anger in some electronic genres if somebody actually did think it essential to punk (which it clearly isn't as such - depends on how you're meaning anger, perhaps dissatisfaction would be nearer the mark).

Electronic dance music is definitely not a descendant of punk in musical terms imo, it grew out of the disco scene in Chicago.

Obviously there were predecessors such as kraftwerk that could be considered dance music, but they definitely had nothing to do with punk.

I would slightly dispute that as there are clearly musical influences of punk present in many electronic acts. But that aside I was meaning attitude and approach - punk as movement rather than music. Very clear similarities in the electronic scene as it developed I'd say.

Definitely agree on their being similar attitudes and ethoses in the two scenes, but dance music a 'direct descendent' of punk? No way. IMO of course.

I was meaning more the attitude and approach than the music itself but probably didn't make that very clear in the original comment. I would still say there are musical influences from punk in much electronic music but it's such a broad term it really depends what you're focussing on. Then there are punk bands who also played electronic music - there was certainly crossover. Throbbing Gristle were playing punk/noise/industrial one year and acid house the next - and many years before acid house became acid house. Yes they did pick it up from the American scene but punk is big on picking up influences and including them and making them its own. Punk and reggae for example. Came from very different places but fused in certain bands - it was still punk even if it did half-originate it the Caribbean. I'd say something similar was going on with punk and electronica.

Again, I totally agree with all your crossover sentiment...sheeps on acid, deadsilence etc

I'm just engaging pedant mode on the 'direct descendant' comment=D
