Gibberings CLVI: Back to the Future

i think there was some sensationalist reporting about the whole thing. I feel safer in Moss Side than i do in other parts of town. I dunno why but i just have lots of respect for black people so i have almost never had any trouble from them.

I was just going to say, I feel far safer in black/ asian neighborhoods than I do in some of the worse white neighborhoods. Generally in the racial areas, people just leave you alone, provided you don't fuck with them. However, in some improvished white area's, I've had bottles thrown at me, punched in the face, relentless shouting and abuse, all unprovoked. I've met some great people in those area's too though, but I do find white 'poor' neighborhoods to be worse than 'ethnic' poor neighborhoods.

Stone's throw (so to speak) from me too.. Hulme is fairly gentrified now and I'd live there.. Moss Side is still a bit dodgy and I wouldn't live there, still a fair amount of gangs and whatnot. The South end of Moss Side nearer Whalley Range is fine though.

My very first gf went to uni in Manc (or was it Salford? sure it was in Salford but still called Manchester but was a long time ago - sure the natives will know where I mean). She often walked home at silly o'clock through Moss Side - on her own or with friends - and said she never had a problem and, once she'd gotten used to the idea of wandering through that self same Moss Side that was all over the media at the time (early-mid 90s) she felt safe too. Again. not much use or relevance to your actual question, SHM, but heyho.

@cheers for the advice, I rang them I dont owe it them, I was to pay monthly for a contract, i ended the contract early as I wouldn't have been able to pay the other months, no point paying for something you dont use! Going to ring me back tomorrow anyway need to find the original contract I signed.

There is a uni in salford, Salford University :D which spent about half a million rebranding the other year so now they have a big University of Salford MANCHESTER in bright red underneath. Also the uni that I managed to blag my way into without them actually checking I had lied about my grades, more interested in the ££ I think. A lot of the new students have a shock when they actually try and go out in salford though the student halls have prison style walls to keep the locals out.

Accidentally put my grocery shopping in the same bag as my electronics shopping, and now my Wii smells of asparagus.

I very much enjoyed living in Muslim neighbourhoods, felt incredibly safer than in both black and poor white areas, say what you want about Islam but it has a very strong influence on social mores and cohesion, back when I was living in Bethnal Green I kept my beard unshaved and I look arab anyway so I never had any issues with the local youths. You have a feeling of social cohesion and order in Muslim majority neighbourhoods that you don't have in poor white and black areas, where you feel the inhabitants are more feral and unpredictable.

as i lived there i had to drive through the place. Some would be working at 8am in the morning. Quite shocking really. The Carlton Road haunt is no longer used either. I drive by these places often as they are en route to somewhere else. Honestly. I must admit i have occasionally done the circuit just to see whats happening, i have never picked up a street whore in Whalley Range. On one occasion there was a 14 year old (guestimate) girl in school unifrom standing there obviously doing business. She may have been a heroin addict.

Thx for the plethora of Manc replies. can I go further? Quinney Crescent. Sorry, don't know which end. One end I see is by Alexandra Road and presumably that estate Sam speaks of. But yeah, Quinney Crescent. Thoughts please.

I was working in Manchester for a few months (years ago)- beside Wythenshawe. A few of the people working with me used to have some interesting tales about gun fights etc.

I feel totally safe during the massive Eid celebrations the asians have in Rusholme near me. In 15 years i have only had one 'dodgy look' off an asian youth, like he hated me and wanted to beat me up or something. I hadnt done anything wrong and had no attitude, i just think that one lone guy had anger/hatred issues.
