So when are you moving to the coast? I know some peeps in NorCal. They are not exactly people this site caters too, but they are good people.

An escaped pitbull followed me home from my run today--followed me for almost a mile. Nicest, gentlest big dog I've ever met. She's also very illegal in my city, and is pretty much sentenced to death now for being visible. I felt really bad not being able to let her stay inside my place. She was so eager to stay in there, as if she knew she was marked for death.
Unless she runs into somebody willing to hide her indefinitely, she'll probably be executed. We just tried to repeal the pitbull ban last year, but it was defeated 67-33. For 25 years now it's been illegal to exist in this city if you're a pit. And for what? Every pit I've met is really nice.
Her owner can't even put up lost dog signs, because he'd be incriminating himself. He must be going nuts.
I really hate my own people sometimes. Paranoid idiots. No heart, and no willingness to change their opinions when presented with new info.

I've never understood the banning of entire breeds of dogs in entire municipal areas. I can understand a homeowner's association not wanting big dogs running around, but entire cities?

I think it's a side-effect of democracy. People vote with their emotions, not with their heads. Imagine a debate with a pro-pitbull vs. anti-pitbull commissioner:
Roaring applause. The pro guy doesn't stand a chance.
hence why elitism > democracy.
it could work wonders if the people chosen (based on their expertise) to make the decisions are held personally responsible for them (through criminal charges, not just losing their jobs through an pissy outvote).

edit: either that, or i think the chinese model can be a good starting point. if you apply that kind of structure to a society with a lower population, and less historic and cultural paranoia, it could be workable.

not really.
the upper offices are not closed to the lower classes and castes. as in anywhere else they face a steeper hill to climb than a privileged person, but the doors are not shut.
