Living With Hepatitis C

I've been living with hepatitis C for over 30 years; I was first diagnosed when the identification was "Non A, Non B" (about 1979 - just before a stint behind the walls).

When I first entered methadone maintenance (1993), the treatment Dr. told me the disease would, most likely, manifest w/ significance in another decade or so [given my history]. He was correct. Since those "significant manifestations", I've been through [Hep C] treatment, twice. First round = non-responder. Second round (with a 3 chemical cocktail) was terminated after 14 weeks; the chemicals were rapidly killing me.
Prognosis? "....we don't believe your liver [heart, and etc.] is/are capable of withstanding further treatment".

After reviving from treatment, I did extensive research and discovered a Dr. who offered a fascinating alternative for treatment of serious diseases of the liver. I called his office, made an appointment, packed my bags, and was off to the Old South-West. Result? Excellent! I now travel, 2x a year, to see the Dr. who is responsible for keeping me alive. For the first time in many years, I've valid hope for stabilization of this terrible disease.

It works for me.

I'm certain I was infected as a result of using community needles in, either, the late 60's or sometime in the 70's. Who knew?

Hepatitis C is a serious, albeit insidious, disease; early years of infection often have few, if any symptoms. However, once the disease has had sufficient time to become well established, it can devastate your life - as well as the lives of those who love you.

Anyone interested in a discussion about living with the disease, please contribute. Working together, we may be able to help one another find ways to deal with this silent killer and live healthier/ more productive lives.

My question is: does early hep infection hinder ur ability to drink and get a buzz

No. If anything, advanced hepatitis should enhance alcohol's effects by reducing your ability to metabolize it.
...
I'm glad you've opted to get tested before turning yellow. :P

ebola

It's a burden if not taken care of ey? What does your alternative doctor use to treat hep c?

I'm really glad I decided to not do interferon. Have you heard about the cure from gilead, a type of modified uridine? 100% cure rate. Fucking far out, I just about shit when I heard that news. I asked my doctor about it the next day and he said "Yep, we're gonna be outta business now."

I have a hellauva lot of experience with supplements, nurition and hep c ... Right now i've been experimenting with some HPBCD complexed silymarin (milk thistle) which is very very bioavailable and works so well.

I'll have to do a writeup a little bit later of some things that have been working for me. Whats been helping you the most? Have you dealt with liver failure, jaundice , M.E. or toxic overload yet?

@ TAR3 - Is that Dr. Berkson by any chance?

What protocol do you follow between visits?

Hi I don't actually have Hep C (that I know of) but I need to ask: My ex from about 3 years ago had Hep C. He didn't tell me until after we had sex quite a few times. I've read on the internet that Hep C can be transmitted through sex but its rare. The sex I had with my ex was unprotected so am I at risk? Also since this was 3 years ago, if I actually had contracted Hep C from sex would it most definately generate a positive Hep C test now or could I have contracted it and it may or may not show up in a test for a certain time period? If so, how long is that time period? I haven't been tested for Hep C yet, that I know of (unless if that's something they test for during pregnacy). When do you suggest I should be tested to get the most accurate result? Also what may be some signs? Thanks.

^ If you have an otherwise healthy immune system, the hep C antibody test can render a positive within 12 weeks. Some people experience flu like symptoms during that time, while others have no symptoms. If you tested positive for the antibody test, then your doctor may decide to do a follow up PCR test to look for the actual viral RNA itself. Even though the antibodies imply that you have hep C, about 10% of people who are exposed to the virus manage to fight it off.

There aren't many early hep C signs, aside from flu-like symptoms when you first contract it. It's an insidious illness that takes years to develop. The early signs of hep C damage to the liver include a sensitivity to alcohol, greasy food, and processed/industrial foods. Digestive issues, basically. People who don't know they have hep C end up inflicting damage to themselves because they don't have the chance to modify their lifestyle to protect their liver.

Hep C can only be transmitted by blood to blood. Sexual exposure is possible if you have rough sex that tears delicate tissues in both partners, causing blood exchange. It's not in semen though, so that's not much to worry about. Sexual transmission is uncommon.

It's important to get tested as soon as it's possible because treatment outcomes for the virus have a much higher success rate within the first 6 months. 75% of people who are treated in the first 6 months with interferon are able to recover. Outcomes diminish after that.

Okay I am a fucking retard and may have just killed myself

I iv'd for @@@@@6 years@@@@@@' was very careful, and due to a recent blood test knew I did not have hep c

In the past few months I went on a binge w a girl I just found out had hep and was careless.

We were shooting crack and I would take the alcohol swabs and suck the juice out of em to clean the rig before we shared...not to mention lots of vinegar going I there. I thought I would be okay. We did this a lot

I KNOW I NEEd TO bE tEstes, and I will SOON

But these are my only symptoms:
I cannot get drunk for the life of me, I'm talking drinking a fifth, and no buzz
Some fatigue in the am

She said when she got sick at first she got so yellow she had to go to er and "almost died"

My question is: does early hep infection hinder ur ability to drink and get a buzz

I have here clean 3 wks, am away from her, feeling great

I will be getting tested within next two wks

If you are in the acute phase of hep C infection (the beginning) then alcohol, greasy food, and processed food can all feel difficult to digest. My advice would be that if you suspect you might be infected, you should avoid all of these because you could be accelerating the disease.

Chances are, you might not even have hep C. But I would take the precaution anyway. Get tested as soon as the testing window has arrived.

Yes, it is!

I am working on a post related to Dr. Berkson which includes protocol used between visits.

Dr. Berkson's [treatment] has brought new life and significant hope with great promise!

May or may not have been exposed to hep c, what should I do?

I was helping a friend Saturday morning when she accidentally pricked my finger with her needle. She said it had been used once, the night before, and cleaned with bleach. I immediately tried squeezing the blood out of my finger and cleaning with alcohol. She has HCV and has been through the treatments. I want to go to the hospital but I'm not sure how it all works since I'm only 17.

Like I don't want anyone to find out about this and I don't have my own health insurance.

The way it works is you explain the situation to a doctor, and get the proper testing.

Stan the man said:

These things could not possibly outweigh making sure you're in good health.

See a doctor!

If you google it, the average is that the virus can survive outside the body on average quite less than a day. Day or more if the conditions are right (moist, right temperature) which I your case doesnt seem likely. Plus, if it was bleached, there is very little chance. But why risk it? Its about your life. If youre worried about insurance, I dont know how it is in your country but that shouldnt really take you more than 15 mins to find out. Be sure and be safe ! ;)

If you catch it early, they have a chemo that can eliminate it, however it is hard on the body and its not 100%. Could be wrong.

Basic Drug Discussion --> Healthy Living

And echoing what's already been posted, you need to see a doctor and get tested. There's no way we can tell you one way or the other if you have hep C.

I just finished a full year of chemo for Hep C. The treatment worked, The treatment was harsh as hell - the Interferon injections felt like I was injecting myself with antifreeze. Pure poison.
I don't know what city you live in, OP, but most larger cities have free HIV/HepC testing and treatment centers, and all information is confidential, and they have a way of "anonymizing" the paperwork. You are assigned a patient #. It's a good system, and nobody will know you went there.
Just go get tested. You have nothing to lose but your health, and possibly your life.

^ Hep C tests are usually covered as part of STD testing. The only way your confidentiality won't be guaranteed is if someone you know sees you going in, or you tell someone.

Needles are the most common vector for hep C transmission. Squeezing your finger and using bleach won't guarantee that the virus stayed out of your system.

You need to wait the standard 12 weeks and then go get tested. If you get tested now it would be pointless.

However, you should go to a hospital anyway because if your risk is high then they could maybe give you anti-retroviral drugs that you'd take for 21 days to neutralize the virus before it can take hold. Many places do that for HIV exposure now, so they could possibly do the same for HCV.

In terms of cost... if you can get anti-retrovirals in your system now, it would cost you far less than if you actually contract the disease and need to do inferon treatment for 12 months.

Good luck! And try to remain calm until you know the facts about your conditions.

thank you for cleaning up this thread!!!!
i have heard over and over again milk thistle is amazing for the liver... and for someone with hcv it can be beneficial
i am terrified of treatment..... its not an option for me atm anyway but eventually its something i will need to consider further
