CEPS Well Hung Parliament (CEPS Social/Off Topic)

i don't care what the anthem is as long as every third word is either "baby" or "jesus".
 
Everything on TV now is about gay marriage. But drug legalization should be a bigger issue than gay marriage. They both involve genetically determined predilections. They both involve victimless acts limited by sumptuary legislation. But only one of them is producing mass incarceration, and only one is dropping bodies. Freedom to marry is not as fundamental as freedom itself.

Even so, it seems like at any moment, the drugs issue will explode all over the airwaves. I thought Colorado and Washington were gonna do it, but it seems like it will take a more dramatic occurrence.
 
^it will take a brave journalist to be first to really examine these issues, i think. it's just too loaded a subject still, and there's a high probability of backlash. every now and then there are expert reports going "maybe we have it wrong", but for each of these there are still two or three "ermagherd, drugs killed this young innocent white person!" piece of newsfiller.

sadly, and inhumanely, it just isn't time yet. politically, i mean.
 
^ It feels like it's getting close, though. The amount of progress toward pot legalization made in the past several years alone has me feeling pretty optimistic that at least people are beginning to re-examine the whole war on drugs.
 
there certainly has been progress, that's for sure. i doubt that it is "close" though. i'd be surprised if there is decriminalisation beyond just pot in the next ten years.
 
Yeah, I meant "close" relative to the speed at which society and democracy usually function. We're still probably decades from significant drug policy reform.

Apparently Venezuela has announced a transition towards US style "democracy":

“We hope that within a few years our democracy will be just as good as it is in the US. They have so many types of plastic cheese there, not to mention TV snacks. The Venezuelan economy is a disaster if we don't have that sort of choice,” said the government spokesperson.
