CNN Cruise Ship Coverage Leads To Ratings Spike

Many people mocked CNN for its wall-to-wall coverage of the Carnival Triumph cruise ship saga. But CNN is probably having the last laugh after its ratings spiked on the night of the ship's bedraggled return to port.

Even people who had been on the Triumph told the network, live on air, that it was making too much out of the story, which it covered for hour after hour after hour on Thursday. Media critics scoffed at the spectacle, which is being widely seen as a harbinger of new chief Jeff Zucker's plans to add more sensational coverage.

But the numbers didn't lie: people were interested. And numbers —not critical approval— are what CNN needs. Despite sky-high profits, its stubbornly moribund prime-time and morning ratings are what led to Zucker's arrival, as well as the ouster of several of his predecessors.

CNN beat Fox News and MSNBC combined in the coveted A25-54 demo for two crucial hours in primetime on Thursday. The Hollywood Reporter said this was a 74 percent jump over the network's recent numbers. CNN also beat MSNBC —its most pressing goal, since Fox News remains so far ahead — in the ratings all day.

They were parodied for this in the Casey Anthony episode of the Newsroom, and apparently they're getting worse. I don't watch them any more because they always seem to be running stories about weimeraners rescuing autistic children from frozen lakes. Also. they present every issue, no matter how ludicrous, as having two debatable sides. This is what was called a "Bias toward fairness", and it's tacky.

in ben elton's 90's short novel about violence in the media "pop corn", which was a parody of the tarantino style crime violence fetishism of the era, the climax involved the main violent criminal holding people hostage promising to let them go if the live ratings he had access to showed people switching off, and he'd kill them if more people tuned in. guess what happens....

For all of you that think voting is pointless I challenge you to look at the recent election.

Marijuana and gay marriage legalization in many parts of the US, possibly gay marriage in the entirety after the supreme court ruling.

Hispanics showed up to vote, and now we are having serious talks about immigration reform. No chance that happens without the Hispanic vote.

Mormonophobia? Aside from Juliana Hough, Mitt Romney, and other dubious people of the Morman faith, I feel that it gets picked on unfairly. Same with those Scientologists. Yeah, I think it's weird, but as long as they just do there thing without bothering me I can be cool with it. The local Mormons here are actually very kind people.
 
MFR, I don't get it. You do almost nothing but rail against conservatives (frequently using the word 'butthole' and drawing penises on their face with MS paint), and yet you choose to prominently display Mitt Romney's crotch as your avatar.
