Backyard Vegetable Gardening & Livestock Raising & Sustainable Living

i assumed, from earlier in the thread, that our chickens would slow down with the egg laying once it got cold. not at all. if anything the eggs are BIGGER now than in the summer. we've started giving out bakers dozens every few days, because we're getting 9 eggs every day.

edith escaped, we had to rescue her

Nice photo. What do/will you do when they don't lay eggs anymore?

I don't have any chickens but many of my neighbors do. A nearby co-op house has about 10. I saw on a facebook event that they were roasting one of them over an open fire last month. For sure I didn't go.

In the warm season I do organic vegetable farming. This time of year I'm still enjoying the fruits of the summer... in frozen form. Tonight we had organic heirloom tomato soup. When harvesting for market last summer, there were tons of tomatoes that were cracked or leaking. Just a little effort to chop and freeze... Score :)

Here are some of the carrots I harvested, cleaned, cut, blanched, and frozen. Purple, yellow, orange, and white:

anyone with any hints or tips; would be very appreciated.

these things grow worse than weeds.

Gardening/farming thread 2013

The spring is almost upon us and that means many of us gardeners already have our seedling started indoors or have everything planned out at least.

Veggies I am growing this year will be - Thai chili peppers, Japanese eggplants, sweet orange peppers, cucumbers, yellow tomatoes and grape tomatoes. I have started these all indoors and most have their first set of true leaves.

Herbs I am growing this year will be - Basil, Taragon, dill, TONS of parsley and cilanto, mint.

Fruit I am growing this year will be - Strawberries, Kumquats(tree is in it's second year), lingonberries and black elderberries.

So fellow BL gardeners, what are you growing this year?

oh i'm gonna heart this thread.

So far all i have started is onions and leeks. Oh and artichokes. Which reminds me i need to get celery going soon. I won't start peppers for at least a month and tomatoes a couple weeks after that.

I'm so jealous! I wish I could have a garden. Living in an apartment, that's kinda difficult. Last summer we did have some cherry tomatoes on our balcony. Hopefully we will be able to have something like that again :)
When I lived with my parents, we had mulberries, raspberries, gooseberries, rhubard, and tons of veggies!

I dont have any experience growing vegtables but I have made a start.
I live in Central Florida and we have two harvest seasons. One begining in spring and the second starting after the summer heat has ended.
I have Tomatoes, Peppers, Jalapenos and am interested in Watermelons and/or Strawberries.

I live in an apartment also but we have a large balcony that gets around 10 hours of direct sunlight during the summer. I would go nuts if I had an actual yard but for now I’m bound to container gardening.

I might try and get involved with some gardening, this year.

I actually have something other than sand to dig in. :D

But, I know nothing about this. So, off to the library with me this weekend, I suppose.

Check out gardenweb.com

It's the best community i have found. Look for posts by someone named Tapla, absolute guru. Especially when it comes to plant health and the science behind keeping them healthy.

it's that time of year already and we're not ready. we're thinking about getting some show chickens, because it would be fun. to have show chickens. we've got ChickenScratch's yoda living with us now, and big things are poppin in that backyard of ours. tomorrow i'll go out and asses the damage that the chickens have wrought on our beds and see what can be done about them.
