Hi all , I have been using meth for about a year pretty hard ranging from 5-7 days a week . Generally not sleeping on weekends and not often full nights sleep during the week . Juice (g,ghb) and alprazolam (Xanax) have been used hard over this stage aswell. I have only recently genuinely tried to quit . It has not worked but how ever am SLowly reducing use . Any tips ? And does anyone no what effects I will still feel in 2 weeks , a month , a year and 10 years time . Will it have changed me ?

Meth causes permanent brain chemistry changes. You will find it hard to find pleasure in things as easily as you once did. This is anhedonia, a study of psychiatric patients with a past stimulant use disorder in full remission for ≥ 2 months and those with no history of stimulant use disorder was conducted and "differed in the prevalence of current anhedonia and amotivation. Results showed that a significantly greater proportion of past stimulant user participants reported anhedonia and amotivation than non-stimulant user participants. The relation between stimulant use disorder history and anhedonia remained robust after controlling for other relevant clinical and demographic factors. These findings suggest that anhedonia may be a preexisting risk factor or protracted effect of stimulant misuse."
(Leventhal, et al. 2009) In english this means that you may never experience the same level of joy in your daily life that you once did before using meth. Some studies have shown that with time your brain will repair itself, if you ever fully recover pre-meth functionality is another issue. Probably best to get some professional help from an addiction treatment program or visit your health care provider.

Sorry to say, but I would say that your drug abuse at the current level will of changed you in a number of ways. Drug addiction changes everyone, and hardcore meth abuse like you described coupled with frequent use of potent sedatives is bound to make a very strong impression on your psyche. It is impossible to quanitify the level of damage or change you will of undergone but in my opinion anybody that tells you that you haven't done any is either ignorant or lying to spare your feelings.

I have a close friend in particular that has struggled with pretty severe meth addiction at times. They have done an exceptional job in cleaning themselves up and less than a year later seem to be doing extremely well in coping with their cravings, so there is definately hope for you.

I wish that I had some advice for you but never having had to kick meth I do not, it surely could not hurt to consult some addiction specialists and see what advice they give you.

I would say see ya later to ya dopamine receptors for a while but I've met alot of way more heavier users using up for a ball of pure a day for several years and after a solid 2 years of not usin, they seemed fine but also started drinking alot of alcohol to replace the gear so I honestly don't know what life would be like for them sober.. pretty sure there's studies done that say chronic use permanently de-regulates dopamine receptors, but I'm not 100% sure on that..

can't really comment on the downers you were taking

I think it might be wise to get in touch with an addiction specialist or some such services. They will be able to gie you some valuable support and advice.

by the way, are you using xanax heavily too? if so, you might need to consult a medical professional about tapering off that.

you may have done permanent damage in some way, but due to neuroplasticity, the brain has a remarkable ability to heal itself. it takes time, rest, patience, and self control.

spot on

hey guys , i have quit meth for 7 days and its not 1 day i haven't thought about twirling the pipe what options i have to get this thought out of my mind

I used about the same as you Franky Figgs but for more (7) years (with some gaps during that time).

I've been quit for over 9 months now and I feel a lot better. I would think there'd still be structural changes in my brain, but it's not like I go around feeling retarded every day. I feel pretty much normal. I'm able to achieve pleasure out of everyday activities again, I have enough motivation to survive, work and support myself. Whether those abilities have been diminished by all my abuse I don't really know, I can't remember what I used to be like all those years ago, but one thing for sure, is that overall, I consider my life good, I feel fine, and I'm more than able to function.

It took 2 months off for me to feel 'normal'. That's when I stopped feeling like an icehead who was quitting, and just started feeling like a more normal person. I could start thinking about things other than the symptoms and my cravings dropped down to a manageable level. IME, the first 2 weeks after quitting aren't the worst, as you'll probably spend them in acute withdrawal, and your life will consist of eating and sleeping. At that stage your body wants rest and it's not so hard to spend those first 2 weeks in a sleepy haze. The weeks between week 2 and week 8 or 9 are always the hardest for me, when your energy has returned a bit, your mind is suddenly working fast again, and the cravings come back with vengeance. These are usually the weeks I've relapsed when making a serious effort to quit in the past.

Thankyou <3 It's one of the hardest things I have done in my life, and I can't describe how happy I am to be at this point, with my ice addiction in the past.

Yep! going to see a professional will be way more helpful than us :) They'd have some good strategies that they could teach you.

The brain does have the remarkable ability to heal itself, I've known a few people who got off it and seem back to their old selves after hitting it hard for around a year or so...if you've been only using it for around a year then you've still got an awesome chance at getting back to a place where you're content without it. Just don't let it drag on because it'll get harder and harder.

A lot of the studies done are based on US meth users, so they don't always apply as strongly to AUS users. It's a lot cheaper and usually more potent over there, so I don't think the situation is as grim for us.

Have a read through this - "Getting through Amphetamine Withdrawal" http://www.meth.org.au/fileadmin/downloads/Amphetamine_wdl.pdf Should be helpful :)

So, I use between 2 and 3 points most weekends ATM. Why does the data never define high meth use? How soon will this level of use affect my brain in this way? Does anyone know?

No idea. maybe it is effecting you alot, maybe a little. I doubt there is a definion of heavy use, it probably varies from study to study. If you have a look at the full write up of the study, it will define heavy use in the method section.

It is important to remember that alot of studies have pointed to methamphetamine being neurotoxic, and with heavy use in particular. Your certainly not doing your brain any favours by using it. but by using less, and with longer recovery periods between sessions, then you have more chance of limiting any damage.

Hey guys, I smoke meth (which I call shard) most weekends, and 1-2 times during the week. My very close friend has just started to clean himself up after going through a stage where he would use meth for 5-6 days straight and not sleep at all, before he started using he was a lean man but still wasn't skin and bones. During his heavy usage he looked like someone from a concentration camp.

What I'm saying is, when you use meth it dehydrates you, and causes you to feel un hungry whenever your high, or coming down. In my opinion it's very physically bad for your body to be doing what you are, if you are not eating, atleast try and drink up n go's or somethin like that, take plenty of vitamins and keep hydrated.
With GHB (I also know it as Juice or Lucy) that can stimulate your hunger, but you shouldn't be taking too much incase of an over dose (blow out) which is very easy to do with GHB.
Psychologically using meth this much is bad for you, your mind plays tricks on you, paranoia can set it, very high aggressiveness and general focus skills will be lost.

It's good that your cutting down, I'm guessing most of you addiction is the actual smoking. Watching the smoke twirl. My best advice is to buy cheap speed that can be smoked and replace meth with it Still getting the twirl, and a minor high.

Nindy It depends alot on your own genetic makeup Tolerance rates and the way you treat your body on a day to day basis You also need to factor in what gear your using.. eg is it shards (ice traditionally higher quality/ strength - although not always thanks to dealers greed and fucking msm.. I digress powdered or street speed( see msm cutters) will be heavily cut.. maybe 10% meth or less plus ur body has to deal with all the foriegn matter (evil cutters)

Obvoiusly if ur at the high end of the market, you would be hoping for better gear, but being stronger than cut shit, It does more damage to the brain in the short and longterm.

Although I consider myself to be of "reasonable"intellect.. I have been using meth since I was 17. Im 38 this yr.. I know There are certain attributes I have lost throughout this time frame. meth being purely responsibile eg simple things like lack of enjoyment over basic things, lack of patience, and on some days if Im really lucky.. this amazing fog in my brain that seems to affect cognitive thinking.. I would be scared witless to get a c.t scan on my brain..for fear of what I am already missing.

Yeah you should just smoke less of the higher purity. Which usually makes stoping completely look like a walk in the park.

Just buy MSM from the chemist and smoke that. It smokes, there's no meth in it, it's the equivilent to those wooden cigarettes.
No but seriously, cold turkey bro. That's the only way that's ever worked for me. Every time I try and taper off something, every redose makes me feel like I have to quit all over again.
