What drugs are good for paranoia? Not to cause it but to get rid of it.

Im on Risperdal but im wondering for extreme paranoia what other drugs do people get put on? What experiences do people have with treating it?

Phenibut makes me immune to paranoia I think. Its addictive as hell though. Baclofen would be a better option.

Benzos (eg. valium, xanax, etc.) are often very good at treating anxiety and paranoia, and are probably the best for it. Other GABA drugs would also work, such as baclofen, pregabalin, phenibut, etc.

The best drugs against paranoia are antipsychotics long term. They have their drawbacks, tho.

^ What they said..

Paranoia (of a degree that is having a negative impact on your life, or resulting from a psychiatric illness) is not something you should be treating on your own. Is your risperidone not working, do you think? Have you discussed this with your psychiatrist? There are other antipsychotics out there which may be more suitable, but this is a discussion for you to have with your doctor. As Lou said, antipsychotics are good for treating paranoid states, although they can have side effects. The important thing is balancing the risks/side effects with the benefit you get. This is one of the reasons why it is something you should always talk over with your doctor.

I would be really wary about trying to self-medicate with something like phenibut or benzos - you don't want to end up addicted, and they may not be suitable for you. Benzos can be really good for short term anxiety/panic attacks but in the long run tolerance and dependence limit their usefulness.

Like others have said - it depends on what kind of paranoia. You sound as though you're talking hard-core, mind racing all the time - checking windows, thinking others are talking/thinking about you. Risperidone is one of the newer 'atypical antipsychotic's' which supposed less side effects than older ones.

I would definitely speak to your doc/psych if it's not working for you, as dosage might need to be adjusted. There are also other newer atypical antipsychotic's available which you could discuss with your doc/psych to see what works best for you! %) I wouldn't self medicate by adding benzos as you could be asking for a world of trouble :(

Goodluck!!! :) :)

Zyprexa seems to be the new miracle anti-psychotic. I have used it a couple of times when I've been too wired for too long and no benzo would even touch the sides. Quick onset - def helped me out when I was wanting my body to calm down before I talked myself into a heart attack! 8(

zyprexa isn't all that new i believe it has been available for over 20 years but don't quote me on that but i know for a fact that the waffers have been on the US market for just over 12 years and yes it works wonderfully but it makes you gain weight very fast usually more so than other anti psychotics

^ As long as you keep taking it. That's why it's so important to take your medication as directed. Some people who have schizophrenia don't take their medication regularly, and therefore have serious problems.

In this case take what the doc gives.

Sounds like you have paranoid schizophrenia (correct me if im wrong) and you should stay on your meds. It sometimes takes awhile to find an antipsychotic that fits you well. If you dont like your Risperdal tell your doc and see if they'll try another with you, but I dont think anyone should be telling you what meds to take for paranoia for a few reasons, one being that most peoples paranoia does not come from the same source as yours, another being that since paranoia can stem from different sources (drugs, personality OR schizophrenia, they are not the same source) there are many different treatments for it depending on the source as well as different effects the drugs can exacerbate.

Basically, stay on your Risperdal until your doc can switch your meds.

Now, there are some SUPPLEMENTS (and probably some other things) that you can take, in ADDITION TO your prescribed medication. Some have been tested in small studies on schizophrenic patients and others simply have anecdotal evidence. Maybe check some of those out.

Heres an example of a small list that is by NO MEANS EXHAUSTIVE! I have read in some other places other supplements/vitamins that might be effective. None of this is really proven in large studies, but some have a few smaller (double blind) studies, others simply anecdotal evidence. Either way most supplements are harmless if they dont help. Check out these AND SOME MORE ON YOUR OWN!

Anti depressants as well as benzodiazepines help with paranoia. There are even some decent herbal remedies worth looking into.

i went through a period of paranoia a while ago, i was smoing a ot of weed, i'm naturally a bit paranoid, but a healthy dose of paranoia, i tried pretty much every anti-psychotic with no avail they were just making me dysphoric so i stopped them, then i stopped smoking weed for a couple of years and it went away mostly, now i smoke weed once maybe twice a weeek max and have no problems with paranoia, sometimes when my mind is racing a bit much i po a benzo, not necessarily the best solution, but it works for me....
also regularly seeing a shrink would probably help more than an anti-psychotic, and it doesn't turn you into a zombie (exageration yes)... but if you have schizophrenia combined with paranoia, then regular shrink meetings combined with an anti-psychotic should really help... i've heard Abilify is a good anti-psychotic wit relatively few side effects

also do you smoke weed regularly, because if you do, i'd be willing to bet thats the culprit?
