The puff of pot that could land a Townsville man in jail in Bali
POLICE in Bali have revealed more details about an Australian man arrested allegedly smoking a joint of marijuana.
The 24-year-old Townsville man, known only by his initials of NJL, was paraded by police today along with the marijuana which has landed him behind bars and potentially facing a serious drug possession charge.
NJL was arrested along with an Indonesian man, known as HPH, in the early hours of Tuesday morning and has been in a police jail ever since.
Police said the Australian man was on a surfing holiday in Bali and that he had told them he was an “active drug user in his country”.
NJL made no comment to News Corporation but police allege he has confessed, under interrogation, that he smoked marijuana at a Bali beach shortly before his arrest.
Police investigator Yoan Septi Hendri said it was alleged that the Indonesian man was given the marijuana for free at the Bali bombing memorial site in Kuta and that he then contacted the Australian to “enjoy” it together.
“After they had dinner that night they shared the joint on the beach,” Mr Hendri said.
“He said that he was an active drug user in Australia. From his country he often used marijuana,” he said.
he Australian man had checked into the Green Room villa at Canggu beach two days before his arrest.
The 25-year-old Indonesian man arrested with him is a driver at the villa.
Police allege the pair was spotted smoking at the beach by a security guard patrolling the area, who reported his suspicions to police.
“When the North Kuta police come, the police saw them share the joint,” Mr Hendri said.
The pair did not struggle but police allege the Indonesian man tried to toss the marijuana from his pocket when police approached.
Police laboratory tests have shown the substance is positive for marijuana. The evidence, which was shown yesterday, includes one packet of marijuana in brown paper, weighing 0.862 grams and one used joint of marijuana weighing 0.106 grams.
Both men have now been named as suspects but are not yet charged.
Under Indonesian law suspects are not charged until the case is transferred to the prosecutors and the court.
Police say they are being held under drug possession charges which carry a maximum sentence of 12 years in jail as well as drug user charges which carry a five-year term.
