CLOSER

It doesn't come out until december...but doesn't this movie look good?

Killer cast..Natalie Portman, Julia Roberts, Jude Law.... (*DROOL*)..looks enticing, sexy, and dramatic. Can't wait for this one.....

overrated as fuck

this movie single handedly proves that Jude law, natalie portman and Roberts are some of the most ridiculously typecasted actors that are now getting typecasted altogether in the same film, no less . Law is a horrible actor who should never be serving his idea of a british accent twice in a row (alfie, than this garbage movie) and portman is boring and lame to watch and has been increasingly so over the years. I have never seen the appeal in her --her acting is prosaic and she is always in the same serious "preserving my innocence" role. She plays herself every fucking time. None of these people have any range. Whatever happened to the Method acting, and performances like the shit Monroe gave in "don't bother to knock" or Brando in "streetcar." Even other contemporary and equally overrated actors like DiCaprio and Christina Ricci have range and diverse ability of expressing their characters; they aren't typecasted. Everyone in this movie is overrated and the story is little more than a glorified soap opera. the dialogue is forgettable and clumsy, and the controversial stripper scenes with portman are corny, clumsy and unnecessary. She never expands any role she plays, it's the same acting from her teen movies which does not fit whatsoever in adult dramas. She is the most underdeveloped character in this movie, and i'm seeing that i don't think it's the written character that lacks development, rather it's her lack of ability to display a character. The melodramatic acting is really embarrassing, and the typecasted trinity of portman/law/roberts (hey that's starting to sound like a legal firm) seem to specialize in this shmaltz because it's the same acting in every movie i see them in, respectively. Amazing people buy into this trash.
8) glad i saw this nonsense for free.

closer

aw i was looking forward to this... sounds like i might be disappointed now
i think it was just the lure of photography in the film that got me excited

Anyone else? I am planning on seeing it tonight and would like to know what I'm in for. Thanks. :)

OVERRATED CAST, dumb as HELL storyline. i am telling you this is a glorified soap opera. i have never seen such a collective of A-list actors act so shitty and retarded in a drama.

i can't believe this bullshit was made by the legendary director, Nichols, the man who did "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" You want a drama about pitfalls of relationships, see that. Elizabeth Taylor tears it up better than Closer's whole cast does, and makes Roberts and Portman look like clowns. As for photography playing a role in this movie, it doesn't. All you get for photo's sake is Roberts taking a few pictures while dramatizing over the village idiot, Law, and more drama bitchery happening at her one-time photo exhibit. Photography plays a small scenery role, that's it.

SON OF A BITCH THAT SUCKED!!!
Sweet merciful Christ that was the worst movie I have seen in a long, long time! I should have stayed home and watched "Wife Swap"!! :X :X

of course it is, ya can't say i didn't tell you.....

"Hate to say I told you so.
I do believe I told you so.
Now it's all out and you knew cause I wanted to."

^ :)

awards nominations have never been a 100% accurate way of defining movie quality (although they are guaranteed to start a good argument).

curiouscub, i think we need to respect people's right to find out for themselves. if i ignored certain movies because i BLer i've never met told me not to see it, i'd have missed some great movies.

so, please, less childish taunting?

you call The Hives lyrics "childish taunting"?
hmm, what was that about respecting others here?!
hehe
oh, nominations are 100% unreliable. they are mostly a popularity contest and actors that won the most actors like kate hepburn never respected them enough to even pick up the oscars she won, which were four.

the fact that somebody else wrote the words doesn't mean they were not used to taunt.

i missed the part of "i told you so" which indicates respect...

indeed. that said, movie awards have a great deal of value in terms of the amount of discussion they tend to generate.

The problem is, you can almost never rely on others' reviews of movies (at least I can't), because it's not accurate. All I need is just the right little element of the movie to be appealing, and I can call it a worthwhile time...

Having said that, I think Natalie Portman is cute as hell, and would be happy to see her act in just about anything.

Definitely would give Christina Ricci the higher grade in acting skills, though. She was brilliant in the movie adaptaion of Prozac Nation, and equally amazing in Monster.

^^of course you can't, but you can rely on someone's judgement of quality things, if they've demonstrated that they are a good judge of it before.

eh, natalie isnt that cute to me --she reminds me of jennifer love hewitt in the way she tries so hard to keep the "cute" factor working for her. they're like a bunch of audrey hepburn wannabes.

I liked it. i dont look forward to the day when i have to say i hated a movie because it seems to be the " in" thing to do. law is actually a v.good actor, try watching " the wisdom of crocodiles".julia who i normally cant stand, wasnt that bad here. portman was bleh. but clive owen took the cake. the cybersex scene is hilarious. do people actually type like that?

I saw this one a few days ago. I enjoyed it enough. I'm not really a big fan of Julia Roberts but not she didn't even bother me too much. I thought that it had a certain kind of honesty to it that seems present in a lot of Nichols work, all though some of the character interactions just seemed a little too forced and unnatural, particularly in the beginning between Portman and Law. I really liked the story in some ways, but in others it just seemed rather stupid. All in all though, I thought it had a lot of good qualities along with the bad, enough to make it worth seeing for me.

aw.

i thought this was a really fantastic film.

funny, i thought the script was brilliant, it was acted very well (except i wasn't so keen on jude law - despite normally being a big fan of his - but some friends are arguing that his simplistic interpretation of the character was on purpose), and was quite compelling.

stylistically, it totally sucked: shit cinematography and appalling editing. but with such a good script, i can overlook it.

i think i enjoyed it because i enjoy seeing people being mean to each other, and i actually liked most of the characters (i'm not the nicest person myself, so that'd be why), and could identify a lot with their crises.

definitely my early favourite of this year (though i haven't seen much yet).

I liked it. I wouldn't put it up for best film, but I'd definately say it's worth giving a chance. It's a very formulaic Nichols film-- so if you know what you're getting into beforehand, you won't be dissapointed when you leave the theater without feeling chipper.

Can't say I enjoyed this film, but that's because I get tired of the glorification of infidelity in films. I actually heard someone call this "a love story for adults", which made me want to throw up. Are we to believe that everybody is as fucked up and cruel as these characters are?

The only good thing to come out of seeing this movie for me was an introduction to the Damien Rice song Blower's Daughter. It had a much more resonant effect on me than the film did.
