Hello all! My son tells me that Xanax bars make him "up" instead of drowsy/sleepy/relaxed effects that Xanax is known for. I cannot find any information on Xanax-induced mania. He gets really talkative, cleans, rushes around, just seems hyper to me. We're just trying to get him to go for help as he has been using Xanax bars (1-1/2 to 2 bars at a time) and taking opiates by mouth. I can tell when he's on both because the opiates make him tired, sleepy, drowsy, and he kinda just lays around, and the Xanax makes him hyper. Just wondered if anyone has had this same effect from Xanax or has even heard of this kind of effect. Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks!! :D

i dont understand how you can be so blase about your son using xanax and opiates?

as for being hyper on benzos, i could see how it can have that effect within a lower dosage range according to the tolerance. because the release of anxiety can lead to an ability to do whatever pops into your mind, whether it is to be talkative, clean, etc.

to describe that as mania is misleading, i think mania is more delusional, and is a bigger shift in character

I have been battling opiate and benzodiazepine addiction myself for some time. I did manage to stop using heroin by switching over to methadone although addiction is a very individual thing... that did help me stop using illicit opiates while for others it may not. I did not initially deal with my addiction problem and, although I had been stabilised on methadone, I started using benzodiazepines. I used to develop particularly worrysome paradoxical reactions to Xanax where I would become hyperstimulated, manic, aggressive and violent wth no recollection of events afterwards. This type of reaction is not uncommon but tends to increase with dosage and length of use.

It was a hard battle for me to stop as, on one hand I fundamentally hated myself for developing these aggressive traits but on the other hand, benzodiazepines are incredibly psychologically and physically addictive, particularly shorter-acting potent ones such as Xanax, so this addiction was definitely my cross to bear.

I did get very good support from my local addiction services, but I am all too aware that constraints in healthcare, particularly mental health, can be quite severe and may be unfortunately correlated to your income depending on where you are in the world. Similar to my heroin addiction, I managed to curb my use of Xanax by stabilisation on a longer-acting benzodiazepine Valium (Diazepam) through supervised consumption via my addiction services and slowly reduced my dosage over a period of months. I have had several lapses and relapses but for many individuals who are struggling with addiction that is part of the journey.

What I do know is that he needs to make the decision himself to want to stop and your attempts and anxieties may at first seem futile. I have infinite love and respect for my mother who single-handedly raised me, and my heart does go out to a concerned mother who is worried for their son. You need to make sure you are not in anyway enabling his behaviour by condoning his drug use and/or providing him with a means of access to his drugs.

Addiction is definitely a illness and not a choice and it has destroyed many aspects of my life as well as friends and family who have cared and worried about me. As a mother, from an addicted son, I think you should try to be seen as providing a supportive environment for recovery as much as is possible. I do wish you all the best.

paradoxical symptoms are not uncommon with people abusing benzos - but i agree with mysterie that you shouldn't call it mania, sounds like an energy boostyes, but mania is taking it a little too far.

this ^^ probably not mania maybe as well as the energy it could be a euphoric response that results in that energy boosttt

It also could be the case that he's taking something else you don't know about. I imagine if you found his stash you'd flush it for his sake so I doubt you know exactly what he's taking.

If hes anything like me once my mom stopped by i would quickly pop something reverse the effects i think youd see as noticable effects.

For example when i was taking xanax id take amphetamine and caffeine if i randomly had family around. So id rapidly go from lethargic to cleaning and super organized focused and overcompinsate so i didnt seem high. For example yesterday i deliberatelyplayed really complex speed metal and played the songs by taping the notes on my phone while surfing the web to make it overtly obvious i am not on drugs because if i was i wpuldnt have such perfect reflexes. Its very possible hes doing something similar acting one way alone and acting how he thinks a super sober person would as soon as u see him

Paradoxical effects do and can occur with any substances or chemicals, fuck even with herbals.

Like with me and Cocaine, it doesn't make me outgoing and confident and euphoric. It makes me want to go home, everyone and everything becomes irritating and then I just want to be by myself.

Xanax like booze can make you hyper.

Your brain has to send the proper signals to not just run around like a hyper sloppy fool.

A clear example of this antipsychotics while major tranquilizers cause restlessness and purposeless musclemovements

A example of the opposite is amphetamine in low doses can make people with adhd sit still.

Xanax is a benzodiazepine which infuenced a neurotransmitter called gaba. It is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain and a big part of your ability to stay still and not hyper is your ability to stimulate the inhibition of thoughts before they turn into actions which relies heavily on areas like the prefrontal cortrex.

Id consider phineus gauge as a example of what xanax is like. He a pole cutt the upper from lower part of his brain and he became basically a impulsive angry frustrated tool

Yip, happens to me all the time (although it isn't neccesarily related to 'abuse' of the drug). Paradoxical effect; pretty rare, but with benzos it makes you very active and hyper. I've always felt it shared similarities with hypomania, but I don't really know enough to make the distinction.

Hyper isnt the best word. Id describe more of disinhibited like your living without breaks that stop fast enough. Like should i drink this bottle of whiskey... well thatd dan ghhhhy...wut? Four seconds ... F**** it yolo ... 8 hours later... Covered in pee and vomit porn everywhere all of your cds orginized by flinging them across the room and the police called to answrr a noise complaint about loud music which u think isnt bery ludd where you forget ti close pornhub and the police see your watching gay porn and u say i know offer im not gay i swear then they ask why do you have womens clothes and a 12 inch dildo and only to say u know what its none of our business just please turn down the music.
