some schizophrenics dont want to take their medication, so they get an intramuscular shot that lasts 1-8 weeks . Why so long? Intramuscular morphine ampule only lasts a few hours

What country does that? Forced meds, is that in a mental hospital or do they dart psychos if they are acting crazy in public; if they do dart crazies, how does one get that job?

Ive just always been interested in how drugs work, i dont have any experience with IM outside medical settings but noticed IMs tend to last longer

I just i found out the other day that a vaccine lasts forever cause it injects a pseudo-virus into the system & antibodies arise when the real virus hits (very cool!)

He said anything psychoactive doesn’t last long, BUT i remember hearing about long acting antipsychotics used IM for schizophrenics who dont want to take their meds (or forget) so im wondering how this IM long acting apiprazole etc works vs a IM of morphine that clears from the system immediately

The intramuscular antipsychotics are formulated as esters, which means a fatty acid is attached to the molecule to slow its absorption. This, combined with the large doses administered and the already fairly long duration of action of some of these compounds, means that a single injection can last a very long time.

You could do a similar thing with morphine but it isn't really potent enough for it to make sense. However similar types of long-acting formulations of intramuscular opioids do exist, for example sublocade (a long-lasting shot of buprenorphine -- which is used as an alternative to daily suboxone).

Terrific! How about adding a fatty acid to fentanyl, so we can IM it to confirmed addicts & also prevent diversion- would that work?

Ive been wondering for a while what to do with fentanyl, now that people are addicted to it & could benefit from a clean supply

Can you add a fatty acid to ANY drug so that if lasts longer IM?
