Who's your favorite director?

^ i edited out a couple of comments about roman polanski's extra curricular activities. let's keep the discussion (in this thread and the forum generally) to the art.

if you want to discuss his life away from the camera, feel free. just not in f&t. thanks.

lol!!! hahhaa i was quite sure his extra curricular activities would get flamed by some bored person looking for a good teasing. but i wouldnt really care anyway , wouldnt change the way i held him in high regard. thanks alasdair :) =D

Im gonna add one more...i cant believe i forgot! what an idiot! my all time fave as well-----< Tim BURTON!!!!!!!! i also love his drawings...his illustrated book "The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy" is one of my most treasured possessions :)

David fincher is one of the greats, can't do much better then Se7en and Fight Club. I hear his next project is going to be Chuck Palahniuk's Survivor, if production can ever get off the ground.

i can't keep it to three :)

jean-luc godard - easily my favourite. though i've seen hardly any of his post-1965 films, his work before then is just brilliant. i just wish i could find his other stuff!!

quentin tarantino - unquestionably the king of film atm. his style is up there with fincher or burton, and kill bill has proven that he has a better grasp of cinematography than those two...plus he knows *everything* about film :D

david lynch - simply amazing. he's a brilliant storyteller (both through visuals and narrative), and has that awesomely fucked-up imagination that only comes with genius...

spike lee - so innovative, and he always has *sooo* much to say. i really particularly like the way he films stuff, too...

david fincher - anyone who's directed fight club, se7en and the game has to be on my list. 'nuff said :)

Yes like claiming spike tv named its network that because of him. Besides do the right thing & 25th hour he has not done anything really impressive. Girl 6 was only good because of Micheal Imperiolli playing that crazy caller.

Do the Right Thing and 25th Hour are two of my favorites for him, but I wouldn't say they're his only impressive films. I thought Malcolm X, Clockers, and Summer of Sam were all very good as well.

The Spike TV thing was pretty ridiculous though. No idea how he could've really believed that it was actually based on him.

let's try to keep this thread upbeat and constructive please? it's called 'favourite directors' which suggests there will be more than the usual level of personal preference on display.

if you want to start an 'overrated directors' thread or a 'spike lee sucks' thread, please go right ahead :)

back on your spike comment, have you seen jungle fever, malcolm x, 4 little girls, or summer of sam? they are all spike lee movies which i would describe as 'really impressive'.

^yaddayaddayadda. I happen to LOVE summer of sam! Tops tops tops on my list of sick but so entertaining movies :)

Terry Gilliam
12 Mokeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Brazil

Stanley Kubrick
2001, Dr. Strangelove, The Shining

Martin Scorsese
Casino, Goodfellas, Bring out the Dead

Coen Bros.
Fargo, Big Lebowski, Hudsucker Proxy

Ridley Scott
Blade Runner, Alien, Hannibal

Hands down my #1: Ridley Scott.

I finally saw The Duelist on the pay channels about 2 weeks ago, completing my viewing of everything he's done.

alasdair... are people only allowed to list their director's and push enter? that doesn't really provoke discussion, which seems to be what you're trying to do... and is kind of the point of a forum.

a comment about why someone disagrees with someone else's opinion isn't offensive... and it doesn't need to be censored..

constructive discussion is, as ever, encouraged and warmly welcomed. comments such as "how could you choose <director x> - he totally sucks" have questionable value.

and neither does this. :)

the forum moderators will be the judge of that :)

next time, pretty please with sugar and a cherry on top, if you have a problem with the style or content of a post which goes beyond the actual issue being discussed, do not raise your concern in the thread. click report. even if the post author is a moderator. click report.

regards

alasdair
