there comes a day that's every bit as bright as the one before
and every night crawls as still as all the nights yet to come
and though my glass is stained red
and the stars burning bright
wine that ran through my mind
is seeping out through the cracks

till veins run dry
till eyes do glaze

the calm and the vanity

these knew what to ruin
these took what was left

wine doesn't flow now as it did all through better days
not in the least like it used to back in the brighter days
far away and scarred and so long ago

reminisce of those phantom smiles
drink to those phantom toasts

to life and glory and joy

they had hundreds of pages filled
they had hundreds of volumes burnt

through the time - there came shame
And in its steps there followed fear
the frayed pages and the heartaches
- and all the old memories creeping back

so the vision grew steadier through the years
.. and the hands firmed, and the mind cleared..

...what a terrible pity
