I hate even typing that out, but as some of you know he is a well known neuroscientist who teaches at Stanford and has his own podcast.

We were discussing fapping on RC Reddit and how to quit and why to quit and someone stated that Andrew Huberman is all pseudoscience. Said that his claim that Testosterone increases if you don’t fap at porn is false . I know it’s a temporary increase but that doesn’t mean he’s a hack. He says as much that it is temporary and that prolactin is increased if you finish fapping. They said he’s a Christian hack. And I’ve never seen him once discuss whatever religion he is and why does it matter.

I really like his podcast and always thought his lectures are based on science and research. I thought that it was @Skorpio who checked him out briefly and said he seems legit at least on surface level. (I’m paraphrasing so please correct me if I’m wrong)

What do you think @AlsoTapered ?

just means I have to find somewhere else to learn things…

Yea I’m also curious… Anyone that pops up on social media as much as he does has me skeptical. That said he did talk me into trying hydrogen, just not his lol. Speaking of it might’ve arrived today, got hydrogen tablets so we’ll see if I notice anything. If it helps with recovery I’m down for it.

@Skorpio is much better placed to really give you a balanced response.

I Googled his name and the first hits are all his line of products.

To me that's a massive conflict of interest.

He appears to be behaving as a nutritionist. In the UK we have a similar character called Dr. Idz (Dr Idrees Mughal (MBBS, MRes, DipIBLM) who IS a nutritionist but he is no longer registered to practice medicine BECAUSE their is a conflict of interests. I don't know if the US allows doctors to do both. But conflict of interest can manifest itself in the unconscious so we guard against that.

Here is the lecture the guy on RC stims took issue with :

And here is a clip I think from the lecture if you don’t have time I would understand as it’s 2 hours. The clip though is 8 minutes.

I do know he is a big intermittent fasting guy. He is a big supporter of not eating until I think afternoon. Which that one I’m not so sure about. But I just posted these because it’s his lectures that I like and he does promote advertisers in the first clips but that’s like 5 minutes of the 2.5 hour lecture. I just don’t think of him as a nutritionist. But I’ve only ever watched his lectures.

He doesn’t seem like he is all about the money at all in his lectures. I just don’t see pseudoscience here but I don’t know much. Just nothing is really new information to me in this clip.

Edit: the second link near the end is where he talks about peripheral dopamine and the brain. The issue dude had on Reddit was he said peripheral dopamine doesn’t affect dopamine
In the brain. And maybe that’s true idk enough.

Interesting fact - this dude is swoll and tatted the fuck up. That’s why he always wears long sleeves. He is literally completely covered. Said he doesn’t want that image to reflect on the field and Stanford

So I went to the Huberman sub on Reddit and they even said that his first 100 podcasts were pure scrim e but he ran out of stuff and became a victim of his success and started reaching for topics and pushing products. So I can see an arguement that they think he’s a hack but I wouldn’t call that a hack. I would call that getting addicted to money and popularity. And yes that’s a negative thing but his first 100 lectures is a lot to just toss out ya know.

But yeah even fans are calling him the new dr oz.

Their a term that refers to unconscious bias called 'Law of the Instrument' developed by Maslow. He really did critique all specialist fields of medicines. In essence, by virtue of being a specialist, a person is expert in a narrow field of medicine thus the best outcome for MOST patients will occur if they are re-referred to an APPROPRIATE specialist.

I think the above is incompatible with someone who profits from NOT referring a patient. I have no way to measure this but I am at least aware of it's importance.

I'm not a neuroscientist so as I said, others are better placed to provide you with the best advice.

Yeah I understand. It does seem to be the consensus amongst professionals

There's certain things. Like that Turkesturone where i do think he oversold the benefits of it then sold it himself. I could be wrong.

I reckon more like what AlsoTapered said though it's like there is a bit of conflict of interest when the latest fad becomes marketable, for them not to jump in on it.

Oh no, not another Dr. Oz, please say it ain't so. Is this guy obsessed with shit, and I literally mean shit?

...hydrogen ...tablets?

Hydrogen is naturally produced by fermentation in the lower gut.

This doesn't, by itself, prove that a tablet designed to produce hydrogen when it dissolves in the stomach is a scam. But an honest person would at least address this and try to explain why the hydrogen tablet is providing an effect you can't get with a can of beans. I haven't really heard of this guy before, because I try to remain as ignorant of the podcast and video Internet as I can.

I don't think he's a hack, but I think that you should generally take any podcaster offering scientific speculation with a grain of salt. Claims about tricks that will increase testosterone are always particularly suspicious because it's an easy way to appeal to the least informed segment of the audience and the real action is happening downstream of testosterone (some people might simply have higher testosterone because they have fewer testosterone receptors, for example!).

At the same time, it seems like he's become a target of the liberal media because he advocates anything other than being really boring. I'm almost instinctively sympathetic towards anyone who gets called a "conspiracy theorist" by a shitlib outlet like Coda.

Great post. I agree wholeheartedly with what you've said here.

I'm highly skeptical of Huberman. Apparently he also advocates for the use of nicotine to prevent neurodegenerative disorders yet entirely disregards the cardiovascular impact of vasoconstriction by nicotine

Dying from a heart attack is a tried and true way to prevent neurodegenerative disorders.

I watch some of his videos on YT. Some interesting stuff to ponder. I by no means watch it regularly or religiously, but he seems like a really decent bloke.

What I do really like about him is his message of personal discipline.
