The gel is definitely absorbed systemically when applied to the skin. So it will essentially carry similar risks to the oral version
Because of the systemic absorption I've gotten some horrible stomachaches from that gel (I've sort of damaged my stomach for too much ibuprofen so I'm sensitive to the GI side-effects of NSAIDS these days).
